Today’s song is from a C grade Costume film, which is categorised wrongly as a ‘Social’ film, byb Geet Kosh. The film is Hum bhi kuchh kam nahin-1958. It was made by Filmistan. Directed by Ramanlal Desai, its composer was S.D.Batish. The cast of the film was Ranjan. Ameeta, Sumitra Devi, P.Kailash, Kanu Roy, majnu, manju Bansal and many others.
What do the heroes and Heroines of Hindi films do when they stop getting main roles ? 99 % remain in films and accept secondary or even character roles. After some time, many of them are reduced to ‘Extra’ level. There are hundreds of such examples, like master Bhagwan, Bharat Bhushan (he was even a watchman at a film studio), Master Shiraz (he became a ” Tel Malish’ wala) Karan Dewan (he became an asst. production manager with B.R. Chopra films) etc. The list is too long.
Only 1 % of artistes stay away from films and pursue some other avocation. For example, Actress Vanmala- she became a Nun at Vrindavan, S.D.Batish/ singer Laxmi Shankar- went to USA and started Music schools, Composer Madholal Master- he entered the Puppet making business and even became the International President of that organisation, Shashi Kapoor Sr.- who went to USA, completed his doctorate education and became a Professor in an US University etc etc.
But such cases are few.
In the cast of this film there are two artistes who were once famous Lead actors but did secondary roles in this film.
The first name is Sumitra Devi- a heavyweight actress in Bangla films and Heroine of many Hindi films. SUMITRA DEVI (Born: 1923 – Died: 28 August 1990). She is recognized for her work in Hindi as well as Bengali cinema during the nineteen forties and nineteen fifties . She was one of the exquisite beauties of her time. She is remembered for her delineation of sensitive women characters in Hindi films like Mashal (1950), Deewana (1952), Mamta (1952) and Mayurpankh (1954) to name a few.
Sumitra Devi was a reigning actress of Bengali Cinema during forties and fifties. Films like Sandhi (1944), Samar (1950), Dasyu Mohan (1955), Saheb Bibi Golam (1956), Kinu Gowalar Gali (1964) carry her genius. But all through her reign she was celebrated more for her infinite charm than her astuteness of an actor. Her large beautiful eyes were evocative of fantasy and she was fascinating when her full, shapely lips part and meet and contract in tune with the vowels and consonants of her speech. In almost every contemporary journal about Sumitra Devi it was literally lauded that her summon was as inevitable and unforeseen as that of death.
Sumitra Devi was born in 1923 at Shiuri, in Birbhum district of undivided Bengal in a Brahmin orthodox family but was brought up in Muzaffarpur, district of Bihar. She was originally named Nilima. Her father Murali Chatterjee was an advocate by profession. While in her teens Nilima was fascinated with the then silver screen beauties like Kanan Devi or Leela Desai and this fascination once turned into a strong desire to be an actress. Films of New Theatres were household names by then. Nilima sent an application along with a photograph to New Theatres. No one but her younger brother Ranajit was in on the secret of doing this. Her letter was answered and she was called for an interview at N.T. and had to undergo a rigorous session of interrogation before finally being selected. Nilima adopted the screen name Sumitra. On the family front she faced a lot of opposition from her father. However she could overcome all odds only through her determination to enter the world of acting and it was the prestigious New Theatres where she signed her first film contract for My Sister. However, she was immediately offered another role by Debaki Kumar Bose in Sandhi which actually happened as Sumitra Devi’s debut film. Apurba Mitra was credited as the director of Sandhi but it was Debaki Bose, uncle to Apurba Mitra, who originally did the job of direction for this film that was remade several years later.
Sandhi was released on 26th October, 1944 and became a huge hit. Sumitra Devi became a star with her first film and she was credited as an actress having an outstanding luminous screen presence. Even her first film won her the BFJA Award in the Best Actress in A Leading Role category. My Sister was released after Sandhi. Even after becoming a star she had to confront strong opposition from her non co-operative family and her first marriage at Bhagalpur ended in a divorce. During this time she became personally close to her Pather Dabi co-actor Debi Mukherjee and she got married to him in 1946. In the same year she again appeared alongside Asit Baran and Bharati Devi under the banner of New Theatres, in a Hindi film Wasiyatnama based on Bishabriksha, the celebrated novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay. In the following years Sumitra Devi continued her silver screen career with the films like Abhijog (1947), Pather Dabi (1947), Pratibad (1948), Joyjatra (1948), Swami (1949), Debi Chowdhurani (1949).
In the year 1950 Sumitra Devi appeared alongside Ashok Kumar in Mashal under the banner of Bombay Talkies. The film was originally based on Rajani, a celebrated Bengali novel by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and was released with a Bengali version under the title Samar. She continued her Bollywood career with films like Ghunghru (1952), Mayurpankh (1954), Chor Bazar (1954), Arabian Nights (1955). In 1956 she appeared alongside Uttam Kumar and Chhabi Biswas in the remarkable Saheb Bibi Golam based on Bimal Roy’s brilliant novel of the same name. Pateswari, the role played by Sumitra Devi became quite an obsession to the Indian filmmakers. In the same year she was featured in The Raj Kapoor starer Jagte Raho which was also released with a Bengali version under the title Ekdin Ratre.
Through the late fifties Sumitra Devi’s reign began to slow down. Her films like Khela Bhangar Khela (1957), Andhare Alo (1957), Joutuk (1958) failed to impress her audience unlike her earlier ones. In Bombay she did some B and C grade films too. It was also opined that during the late fifties the audience of Bengali Cinema got preoccupied with the obsessive beauty of the then reigning Suchitra Sen and that drove Sumitra Devi into a corner. Still she had Kinu Gowalar Gali, a 1964 film in which Sumitra Devi, for the last time, excelled as an astute actress. Sumitra Devi died in Bombay on 28th August, 1990.
The other name is P. Kailash. Once he was a hero in many films, However, hardly anyone remembers him now. The name of P.Kailash who had worked as a Hero in the past, may be a matter of surprise for some readers. For a long time, I was very curious about this actor. One day I was reading a book ” Asli Nakli Chehre ” ( असली नकली चेहरे ) by Vithal Pandya. In this book, he has given information about P.Kailash, who did the main role in the film ” Jai Hanuman-48″, for which Pandya was an assistant Director. Vithal Pandya had spent over 30 years in the film industry from the 30s and 40s. He worked with many directors and in many banners. He wrote 2 books in Gujarati/Hindi, which are highly informative with first hand knowledge. For example, he mentions that S N Tripathi, the Music Director was also an actor and was famous in the role of Hanuman in all Wadia movies. However in the film-Jai Hanuman-48, he played the role of Ravan. Anyway, based on information in this book coupled with an article by M N Sardana ji, on Fb page ‘Woh din yaad karo’ about P.Kailash, here is some information on P.Kailash for our readers, first time. My thanks to both of them.
Mr P Kailash (Pandit Kailash Chandra Sharma), was born on 03 February 1924 at Multai, a small town in Distt Betul ( Madhya Pradesh ). After doing H.S.C., he did a stint of teaching in Akola. Bestowed with sharp features, and deep voice ,fair coloured P Kailash came to Bombay in 1946 to become an actor . He did not have to wait for a long time to have an entry in the film line .
Seth Chandulal Shah gave him a chance in his mythological movie Jai Hanuman ,as the hero opposite Nirupa Roy . The movie, made under the banner of Ranjit Movietone ,was directed by Ramchandra Thakur . Thereafter , Mr Kailash appeared in many mythological, fantasy and historical movies like Veer Durga Das, Sati Anusuiya, Maha Bharat, Prabhu Ki Mahima, Veer Arjun, Gopal Krishna , Nadir Shah, Thief Of Baghdad, Hercules ,Aab E Hayat, Gul E Bakawali etc . In 1953 ,he performed as a cop in Ranjit Movietone’s Papi ,along with Raj Kapoor . With Dilip Kumar, he did a role which had comic shades in Leader. Shirin Farhad ,made by veteran filmmaker Aspi Irani, was another movie in which his performance was much appreciated .
Mr P Kailash appeared in numerous movies made by Filmmakers like Shree Ram Bohra, B K Adarsh and Filmistan. Maine Jeena Seekh Liya, Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain ,Picnic ,Baba Sari Ladli (Rajasthani) ,Jekra Charanwa Me Lagale Paranwa (Bhoj Puri) ,Love and Murder ,were the movies , Mr P Kailash did for the said film makers. Versatile director Krishan Chopra (May God Bless His Soul) ,who died before completing his second movie ,gave him a lifetime role of a tyrannical landlord in Heera Moti which was based upon the heart warming story Do Bailon Ki Katha ,written by great writer Prem Chand . He brought alive the arrogant and heartless Zamindaar on the screen with his dynamic performance .
Krishan Chopra, impressed with the magnificent personality of Mr P Kailash, gave him an important role in his next movie Gaban, which was completed by Hrishkesh Mukherjee, after Mr Chopra passed away untimely. It was a sad coincidence that Mr P Kailash ,also did not live long. While on a visit to his birth place Multai, he suffered a massive heart attack and left for his heavenly abode on 23 May 1967. Payal Ki Jhankaar ,made by Filmistan and Thief of Baghdad by Mr Shree Ram Bohra were released later ,after he had gone forever at the young age of 43 years ,leaving his two daughters ,one son and wife. P.Kailash acted in 43 films. His first film was Jai Hanuman-48 and the last released film was Irada-1971.
Hum Bhi Kuchh Kam Nahin was a routine, lustreless, ordinary costume film with a beaten story of a King, queen, evil vazir etc. The story was….Usman(Ranjan) and Mamubhai(Majnu) were fast friends.Usman was a young man who did nothing, Mamu was King’s employee.Yar Khan(P.Kailash) the evil and crook Vazir of the king was waiting for a chance to usurp the throne. He kidnapped Zubeida(Manju),sister of Usman and took her to his palace where she commits a suicide. Now Usman wants his revenge.
Princess Zarina(Ameeta) is returning from her hunting trip. She is attacked by Yarkhan’s goons, but Usman saves her. They dutifully fall in love and she promises to help him. When they reach the palace Usman is attacked by Yar khan’s soldiers but is saved by Zarina. There is Salma(Sumitra) court dancer, who also loves Usman and promises her help.
Finally Yar Khan, crookedly captures both Usman and the King and blackmails Zarina to marry him or else……
Salma, Mamubhai and other loyalists rescue Usman. There is a terrific Sword fighting(obviously to use Ranjan’s skills) in which Yar Khan is killed by Usman. The king returns with a bandbaja and Usman gets the job of Vazir and princess Zarina as his salary.
Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhosle. It looks like a dance song in a king’s durbar. Enjoy…..

nazren milaane ka naam

ye jawaanee to hai bas deewaanee
aag ko bhee samjahtee hai paanee
ye jawaanee to hai bas deewaanee
aag ko bhee samjahtee hai paanee
daaman bacha jaan na ganwaa
deewaanon ka hai ye kaam
jaa jaa jaa jaa

sun na le ye tere dil ki dhadkan

sun na le ye tere dil ki dhadkan
yoon na machal naadaan sambhal
sar pe na le ilzaam
