#the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
———————————————————————

Today 14th November is celebrated as ‘children’s day’ in our country. It is also the birthday of our first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He was very fond of children. While earlier every 14th November was celebrated being the birthday of Jawaharlal Nehru it was in 1954 that it was first time celebrated as ‘children’s day’ too. I was looking for a song for this occasion and I thought of this song which I like very much. It is from the movie “Hum Bachche Hindustaan Ke-1984”. In 1983-1985 I was staying at Akola with my grandparents. I was studying at Akola for my Std. 11th -12th. There we had a group of friends that also doubled as our cricket playing group. We used to watch ‘Chitrahaar’ on the ‘black and white-TV’ at the home of one of our friends home who was lucky to have TV at his home those days. 🙂

“Hum Bachche Hindustaan Ke-1984” was a movie from the genre of ‘Patriotic Movie (Deshbhaktee Pradhaan movie) from the banner ‘Dhanpat Mehta Productions, Bombay’. It was directed by Dhanpat Mehta. He was also the producer and writer of this movie. This movie has Umesh Khanna, Saudamini Rawal, Sumit Verma, Pallavi Joshi, Sanjay Mehta, Milind Gawli, Rahul Dev Sengar, Shraddha Panchotiya, Kishore Kapoor, Padmashri Joshi, Kumar Ram Pravesh, Shashibala, Azmat Khan, Chunnu Mehra, Anita Gupta, Rajendra Sanjay, Samar Mathews, Moti Sagar and others. Alankar, Acharya Bhagwan Dev, Principal Newton, and Sanam Gorakhpuri has a guest appearance in this movie. This movie has five songs penned by Sanam Gorakhpuri (mentioned as ‘Rashtrakavi Sanam Gorakhpuri in HFGK Vol-V (1981-1985)). Music for this movie was composed by Zameer Bikaneri. The singers for this movie are Shameem Azad, Dyaneshwar Dubey, Anup Jalota, Preeti Sagar, Dilraj Kaur, Akhtar Juned and Uday Chandra. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 30.01.1984.

I could not find much information about Dhanpat Mehta except that he was the director of ‘Filmi Duniya Filmi Log’ an unreleased film from the seventies. For this movie he is also credited as an actor and lyricist too (he wrote one song for this movie). The lyricist of the song under discussion is Sanam Gorakhpuri. Sanam Gorakhpuri has written a song for the movie ‘Romeo in Sikkim-1974’as well. This song of ‘Romeo in Sikkim-1974’ is already posted on this blog. He has written songs for only these two movies, viz ‘Romeo in Sikkim-1974’ and ‘Hum Bachche Hindustan Ke-1984’.

The music composer for this movie ‘Ham Bachche Hindustaan Ke-1984’ Zameer Bikaneri seems to be a ‘one movie wonder’, as his name appears as composer of only this one movie.

All the above information is on the basis of the information I could find on internet. If we come across any new information about these artistes in future, we will update the same here. I would also request knowledgeable readers to provide more information about them if available with them.

Coming to the song for today, it is a nice motivational song to listen to. I could not locate the video of this song on internet. But I remember that it was available online (may be one year ago or so). This song is picturised on many children riding on bi-cycles. Actress Pallavi Joshi is the lead character in this song and others are shown following her. That is what I vaguely remember from my memory of watching this song on TV in 1984-1985.

The singers’ names for this song are new to me and I think they are all making their debuts here on the blog. The singers for this song are Shameem Azad, Dyaneshwar Dubey, Akhtar Juned, and Uday Chandra. This is on the basis of the information available in HFGK Vol-V (1981-1985). (Some sources mention some other names like Ghulam Nabi Azad as the singer for this song?).

Let us now listen to this song. The lyrics are nice as are usual for this type of songs. I particularly like this line ‘ham sapne hindustaan ke hain aen, ham bachche hindustaan ke ae’ … .

When we look at songs like this, we notice that the lyricists of such songs dream of a time when India will be a developed country and children (who lip sync such songs) will be the agents of such change. The lyricists themselves have no idea how such changes will be brought about by the children when they grow up. Their aspirations are in line with the dreams that our rulers of the day sell to us.

From the time India gained independence, Indians have been sold the dreams that India will join the list of developed countries one fine day. But we notice that the policies that Indian government was following all these days failed to make India a developed nation. Though India is a democracy, Indian public (who are told in such songs that they will bring change and prosperity) had no say in taking the nation forward. It was believed that the Government will do the needful. The Government failed to do what songs like this promised.

It is only when India faced imminent bankrupty (thanks to India Government policies) in 1990s and India had to seek IMF loan that we realised that instead of becoming a developed nation, India was on the verge of becoming a bankrupt nation. IMF bailed India out but India were forced to change their economic policy policies and bring economic liberalisation. It is these changed policies that Indian citizens (who were not part of government) were finally allowed to participate in nation building. The change in the fortunes of India after liberalisation of Indian economy has given renewed hopes to Indians that India has finally started to move in the correct direction that will take us to the destination of prosperity.

Being a fan of Sahir I would like to believe that the ray of hope are getting brighter and the subah is round the corner for all of us. Every new generation will hopefully lead a better life in India than the generations that came before them.

Jis subah ki khaatir yug yug se
ham sab mar mar kar jeete hain
jis subah ki amrit ki dhun mein
ham zehar ke pyaale peete hain
in bhookhi pyaasi roohon par
ek din to karam farmaayegi
wo subah kabhi to aayegi

Till then …. Enjoy this composition …

I have vague memories of having seen this film in school, in one of those compulsory screenings that schools used to have of such films or on Doordarshan.

the song also sounds like I may have heard it
