Blog Day :

5982 Post No. : 18661

Today’s song is from the film Pataal Bhairavi-1952. This is the film’s last song to feature here, making the film an YIPPEE film.

With all the earlier 8 songs already discussed in detail, almost all the information about the film and its cast is already given by the contributors-including me. This posed a big problem for me as to what I can discuss now that is not yet conveyed in earlier posts. But for every problem there is always a solution and I found it, looking at the cast again. This film was a dubbed film, not a remake and hence all the artistes were from the south. Barring a few main Hero heroines, people outside South are not familiar with other character actors from below the Vindhyas.

I saw 2 names in the cast about whom nothing is written on this Blog so far, as far as I know. However they were important artistes in the South, for different reasons. Let us see how.

The first is Surabhi Kamla/Kamlabai/Kamla Devi. She was the Historical first actress to feature in the First Talkie film in Telugu – Bhakta Prahlada-1931, made in Bombay in 1931, when she was just 18 year old. Incidentally, even the first Tamil Talkie film “Kalidasa” was also made in Bombay in 1931. Both the films were produced and directed by the great H.L.N.Simha.

Not only this, but Surabhi Kamala was perhaps the world’s youngest artiste to come on stage. Her mother was acting as Leelavathy- wife of Hiranyakashipu in the drama ‘Bhakta Prahlad’. In the drama she was pregnant with Prahlad in her womb. By chance she was ,in reality, also pregnant with Kamla in her womb. During the drama itself she started getting labour pain and she went in the wings. There she delivered a baby girl-Kamla. After some time she came on the stage again with her new born (Kamla) as Prahlad. Thus Kamla appeared on stage as soon as she was born. The coincidence is that in the first Telugu Talkie ‘ Bhakta Prahlad’ – 1931, Kamla did the role of pregnant Leelavathy- wife of Hiranyakashipu !

At the age of 19 years, she was in the films Paaduka Pattabhishekam-1932 and Shakuntala-1932. These were made by Sagar movietone. She also acted in the Telugu films made by East India Films, Calcutta. She was in the dubbed Hindi films like Pataal Bhairavi-1952, Mangala-1950 etc. She also acted in films like Shehar ka Jaadu-1934, Do Deewane-1936, Be kharab jan (Gujarati)-1936 etc.

Kamla belonged to the well known Surabhi family. History says, after the 1857 war of independence some soldiers from Maharashtra left army and settled in Andjra. Later they started a drama company named Surabhi Drama Company. During the period 1910 to 1950 there were 50 family branches of Surabhi doing dramas. Kamla was born in 1913, when, as detailed above, her mother’s drama was in the process. She was also a singer and sang several songs in Telugu and Tamil films. Today’s song is the only song she sang in Hindi. Surabhi Kamla/Kamlabai/Kamla Devi died in 1977.

The other artiste of interest is Relangi- a character artiste and a well known popular comedian. Like Ghantasala, Relangi was his Surname, the first name being Venkata Ramaiah.
Relangi Venkata Ramayya ( 9 August 1910 – 27 November 1975), known mononymously by his surname as Relangi, was an Indian actor, comedian, and producer known for his works predominantly in Telugu cinema. He was honoured with the Padma Shri for his contribution to Indian cinema in 1970. Relangi was particularly known for his comic expressions, and dialogues during the 1950s and 1960s. Together with Ramana Reddy, they were a comedy double act.

Notable Relangi performances include films like Gunasundari Katha (1949), Vipra Narayana (1954), Missamma (1955), Donga Ramudu (1955), Mayabazar (1957), Appu Chesi Pappu Koodu (1958), Velugu Needalu (1961), Iddaru Mitrulu (1961), Kula Gothralu (1962), Lava Kusa (1963), Chaduvukunna Ammayilu (1963), Nartanasala (1963), and Preminchi Choodu (1965). The Relangi Art Academy Award was instituted in his honour for best comic performances.

Relangi was born in the village of Ravulapalem in the East Godavari district in Madras State (now Andhra Pradesh). He was a professional Harikatha performer and also an expert Harmonium player. He grew up in Kakinada; however, he didn’t show interest in education due to his passion for acting.

Relangi started his initial career acting in stage and folk theatre and also took female roles in stage theatre. He started his film career by playing a Vidushaka (Jester) role in his first Telugu film Sri Krishna Tulabharam in 1935 under the direction of C. Pullayya. Later on, he assisted Pullayya as a Production Manager until he got a major break with the film Gollabhama released in 1947. Subsequently, he played a comedic role in Vindhyarani (1948), which was a big hit. He was a regular face in all the movies made under the Vijaya Films banner from 1950. He grew so popular that he was given a chance to play a comedic hero role in Pakka inti Ammayi in 1953 under Pullayya opposite Anjali Devi.

As a comedic actor, he was quite popular when partnered with actress Girija, actress Suryakantham, and another comedian actor, Ramana Reddy. These combinations were repeated for several hit movies in Telugu.

As far as Hindi films are concerned, he was seen in films like Pataal Bhairavi-1952,Pardesi-1953, Chandirani-1953, Jaisingh-1959, Miss Mary-1957, Maya bazar-1957. He had produced 1 Telugu film in 1960. He was awarded Padmashree in 1970. Two interesting Telugu films in which he acted were Goodhachari-116, which was remade as Farz-1967 and another was Rojulu Marai-1955, in which Waheeda Rehman entered the film line first time. He owned a Cinema Theatre in his home town Tadepalligudem in Andhra Pradesh.

I am happy that today I could get an opportunity to introduce two New artistes from the South to our readers. All this information is collated, adapted and used from various sources like komparify.com, manacine.com, IMDB, wiki, indian filmhistory.com, famousfix.com etc.

Now enjoy this 72 year old song….
