Today’s song is from a Bilingual film – Nanhe Munne-1952.
It was made in Marathi and Hindi by Alhad Chitra. In Marathi the film’s title was ” Chimni Pakharen” (चिमणी पाखरें ), which means ” The young birds”. The film was produced and directed by Datta Dharmadhikari and the music was by a pair- Vasant(Pawar) and Ramchandra(Vadhavkar). The cast of the film was Baby Shakuntala, Sulochana (Latkar), Raja Nene, Indira Chitnis, Alhaad (son of Datta Dharmadhikari, on whose name the banner was named), Raja Gosavi and many others. The Hindi songs were written by Pt. Phani.
As was the practice in our joint family, I was sent for this film, leading a group of elderly (read old !) men and women of our family. I had heard that this film was a solid tear jerker and wondered, despite knowing this, why these people wanted to see this film ? Perhaps they enjoyed weeping in the theatre, along with the majority of the audience, comprising of such ‘Bujurg’ men and women like them. For half of the film there was only hissing and fussing noises in the theatre !
Datta Dharmadhikari was born on 2-12-1913 at Kolhapur in a lower middle class family. He studied up to Matriculation and started working in various film studios of Kolhapur. He first worked with Baburao pendharkar and then joined Prabhat. He learnt from almost every department of film making, except the Music department. He even acted a small role in film Sant Gyaneshwar -40, a bilingual in Marathi and Hindi. Having worked as an assistant director, he became an independent Director with the film ‘Shadi se pehle ‘-47. Simultaneously, he directed some very successful films in Marathi.
He established his own production company “Alhad Chitra “. Alhad ( means joy ) was his son, who worked as a child artiste in all his films- Hindi and Marathi.Datta re-made some of his successful Marathi films in Hindi, like Nanhe Munne-52 ( Chimni Pakhare in Marathi), Mahatma-53 in 3 Languages- Marathi, Hindi and English and Suhagan-54 ( Suwasini in Marathi ).
When he produced the film Mahatma-53 in Hindi and Marathi with an English version,he lost heavily and was forced to sell everything he had. Things were so bad that his wife had to cook Tiffins for people to run the house. However Datta came out of this all. He started accepting Directorial work from other producers, both in Marathi and Hindi. His last film was in 1982. Datta Dharmadhikari died on 30-12-1982.
He directed 21 Marathi and 11 Hindi films. His films in Hindi are Shadi se pehle-47, Maya Bazar-49, Nanhe Munne-52, Mahatma-53, Bhagyawan-53, Savdhan-54, Sudarshan Chakra-56, Deep jalta rahe-59, Subhadra Haran-64, Mujhe seene se laga lo-69 and last film Daulat ka Nasha-82. He gave break to a pair of Composers- Vasant-Ramchandra ( Vasant Pawar and Ramchandra Wadhavkar ) for 5 of his films in Hindi, but they could not get any work from other banners and their career in Hindi, as a pair, ended with these 5 films only.
Surprisingly, the film had only 5 songs – unusual for a film of that era. One of its songs (in Hindi) was also used in the Marathi version as it is. It was sung by the famous classical singer Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande, who sang very few songs for Hindi films. The music to this film was by a pair – Vasant-Ramchandra. For a very long time it was believed by all (even by me, till I knew the truth a few years ago) that Vasant Desai and C. Ramchandra took these names in short forms. It was easily believable because C.Ramchandra was known to have used different names like Ram Chitalkar, Shyamu and Annasaheb etc.
The book ” Marathi Chitrapat Sangeetkar Kosh” by Shri Madhu Potdar has clarified that it was a pair made by Vasant Pawar and Ramchandra Wadhavkar, both from Marathi film industry. They came together with this joint name only for 5 films made by Datta Dharmadhikari. In Marathi films, they worked individually in their real names. Pawar gave music to 50 Marathi films and 8 Hindi films, while Wadhavkar gave music to % films each in Marathi and Hindi.
Datta Dharmadhikari gave break to this pair of Composers- Vasant-Ramchandra ( Vasant Pawar and Ramchandra Wadhavkar ) for 5 of his films in Hindi, but they could not get any work from other banners and their career in Hindi, as a pair, ended with these 5 films only.

2.Mahatma-53 (Trilingual in Hindi, English and Marathi)
3.Suhagan-54 ( Remake of Marathi film Suvasini सुवासिनी )

One of the names in the film cast is Raja Nene. Raja Nene was born in a small village in Konkan, on 18-9-1912. His real name was Gajanan Hari Nene. His early education was done in his hometown and he graduated from a college in Ratnagiri. He was the nephew of Vishnupant Damle, a partner in Prabhat Films. After his graduation, Damle employed him in Prabhat as an assistant Director.
Raja assisted Shantaram in the film Vasantsena-35 and Amar Jyoti-36. During the making of the film Sant Tukaram, he was shifted to the Damle-Fattelal duo as their assistant Director and he became a key figure in making that film. Subsequently, he continued with the Damle – Fattelal duo in their other ventures like Gopal Krishna-38 and Sant Dnyaneshwar-40. For the film Sant Sakhu-41, his name was included as one of the directors, along with Damle-Fattelal. In between, he also acted in the film Duniya na maane-37.
In 1942, he directed his first independent film ” Dus Baje” , a Marathi-Hindi bilingual. Meanwhile, V Shantaram, a mentor for all junior aspirants and his proteges, left Prabhat to start his own studio-Rajkamal Kalamandir. Same time, a new film of Prabhat-“Ramshastri” was given to Nene for direction. However, a group of Shantaram loyalists – Athavale, Dharmadhikari, Mukhram Sharma, Raja nene and Keshavrao Bhole – decided to leave Prabhat. The incomplete film Ramshastri-44 was completed by Gajanan Jagirdar, in addition to doing the lead role in the film. Keshavrao Bhole also completed his work before leaving Prabhat.
The entire group joined Mohan studios. After the film Taramati-45, Nene started his own company – Raja Nene Productions and made the film ” Shadi se Pehle”-1947. Nene not only acted in the film, but also directed it along with Debutant director Datta Dharmadhikari. After Rajkamal, Nene Productions was the next big production house to emerge from Prabhat Films. It was followed by Alhad Chitra of Datta Dharmadhikari.
After directing the film Lalat-47 ( debut film of actress Usha kiran), Nene turned to Marathi films, acting and directing hit films like, Patthe Baburao and Ketakichya Banat, Sant Ramdas etc. He returned to Hindi films and directed Shri Vishnu Bhagwan-51, Bhai ka pyar-51, Rajrani Damayanti-52, Lanka Dahan-52, Indrasen-52, Radha krishna-54, Pehli Tarikh-54, Hanuman Janma-57 and Gauri Shankar-58.
In between and after 1958, Nene directed only Marathi films, but acted in few Hindi films. His film Pehli Tarikh-54 was a hit film and the famous Kishore song, ” Khush hai zamana aaj pehli tarikh hai” was filmed on him only. Film Pehli Tarikh was remade in Kannada and Tamil by P. Neelkantham as Modaltedi-55. Raja Nene expired on 21-2-1975 at Bombay. He directed 16 Hindi films and acted in 14 Hindi films from 1937 to 1975.
