Today’s song is from a C grade Costume film Taj aur Talwar-1956. This was a Satya Rai production film and the producer was Satya Rai himself. Not only this but he had written two Lyrics in this film, including the song under discussion. Satya Rai had written five songs for yet another of his film-National Musical documentary-Jaigaan-which was shown along with ” Soldier’s Dream or Sipahi ka sapna”-1948, a film based on Subhash Chandra Bose. In that film also the Music Director was Sudipta Bhattacharya-just like in this film (Taj aur Talwar). Sudipta had given music to some other films like Ghulam, Begum,Badshah-56, Silver King-57(with Bipin-Babul) and Shan-e-Hind-1960.
The cast of the film was Satya Kumar, Shashikala, Smriti Biswas, Daljit, B M Vyas, Nazir etc The director was Dwarka Khosla. Dwarka Khosla was born in 1904 in Hoshiarpur-Punjab. He started his career with silent films. His first Talkie film as a director was ‘ Josh-E-Jawani’-1935. He went on to direct 33 films. His last film was Raju-1962.
This was one of those C grade Costume films which had B grade actors, director and MD. In the 40’s and 50’s decade such films came in droves. In 1935, when the Wadia Brothers took the Australian actress ‘Fearless Nadia’ into their fold, for the film ‘Hunterwali-1935’, the rise of such films started in real sense, creating its own audience group all over India. Not that before this stunt or costume films were not made. They have actually been the staple group of films in all the Indian languages,,but the Nadia film made their popularity grow by leaps and bounds !
In addition to daredevil stunts male and female human actors, there were ‘Veterinary’ actors also in such films. They ranged from, Tigers, Lions, Cheetahs, Snakes, turtles, Donkeys, Horses, Sheeps, elephants, dogs and all other possible animals. There were specialists who reared, trained and traded such animals. Above all, there was a Khatara looking but working Car called “Rolls Royce ki Beti” in stunt films. After Homi Wadia separated from J.Bhj.H. Wadia and started his own Basant pictures in 1942 he had his own set of a trained Horse, Tiger and Dog. he further added a Car called ‘ Austin ki Beti’ and what is more he also added an old Motor Cycle and called it “Runnio” !
One will be surprised to see actress Shashikala’s name as a Heroine here, but this was a period when she was struggling and no film was a taboo for her. Later, of course, she did sophisticated roles in films of famous and big banners. Not much is ever found written about Shashikala’s life anywhere.
Shashikala Jawalkar-Saigal ( born on 4-8-1932), much better known as Shashikala. Shashikala was born as one of six siblings in Solapur, Maharashtra in a well-to-do Marathi-speaking Jawalkar family. By age 5, she had already been dancing, singing, and acting on stage in many towns in Solapur district. When Shashikala was in her pre-teens, through ill luck, her father became bankrupt, and he brought his family to Bombay (now Mumbai) where they thought that Shashikala, the best-looking and most-talented among his children, could find work in movies.
For some time, the family lived with friends and barely survived, while Shashikala wandered from one studio to another looking for work. She earned in bits and pieces till she met Noor Jehan, the reigning screen queen. Noor Jehan’s husband, Shaukat, was making a movie Zeenat then, and included Shashikala in a qawwali scene. She received 25 rupees for her role. She struggled on and got small roles in movies made by P. N. Arora, Amiya Chakravarti, and a few other producers. She got roles in V. Shantaram’s Teen Batti Char Rasta and a few other movies. While in her early twenties, Shashikala met and married Om Prakash Saigal, who belonged to the Kundan Lal Saigal family, and had two daughters.
Acclaimed supporting roles: In 1959 she appeared in Bimal Roy’s Sujata. In Tarachand Barjatya’s Arati (1962), starring Meena Kumari, Ashok Kumar, and Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala portrayed a negative role, eventually winning a Filmfare Award. Soon after, offers began to pour in to her for supporting roles. She appeared in Jangalee, Anupama, Phool Aur Patthar, Ayi Milan Ki Bela, Gumrah, Waqt, and Khubsoorat. Meena Kumari, Padmini, Nutan, Sharmila Tagore, Mala Sinha, and Waheeda Rehman have been among the leading actresses with whom Shashikala performed in supporting roles. While the female lead costars in the involved movies usually played roles of good-natured, modest, or pious women, Shashikala usually played either flighty and feisty bubbly women or vamps who plotted the downfall of others.
Later in her acting career, she would typically play the role of a sister or mother-in-law. She performed in supporting roles in over 100 movies. Asha Bhosle was often the playback singer for Shashikala in her earlier career. “Sheeshe Se Pee” and “Bheegi Bheegi Faza” “Zindagi Me pyar karna sikh le” are three popular songs which Bhosle had sung for Shashikala. In the past few years, Shashikala has performed in a few television serials, including Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai for Sony, Apnaapan for Zee TV,Dil Deke Dekho for Star Plus and Son Pari for Star Plus. She has also had successful roles in Mother ’98, Pardesi Babu, Baadshah, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi and Chori Chori.
Shashikala died on 4-4-2021 in Mumbai. She acted in 167 Hindi films and 74 songs featured her on the screen.
Awards: Shashikala had received eight nominations for the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and won the award twice:
1962: Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, for a role in Aarti.
1963: Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award, for a role in Gumrah.
She received several awards for Best Supporting Actress (Hindi) at the Bengal Film Journalists’ Association Awards – for Aarti in 1963, for Gumrah in 1964, for Rahgir in 1970.
Shashikala received the Padma Shri award (the fourth greatest civilian award) in the year 2007 for her contribution to Indian Cinema. When she received the award, she said, “I have been recognized for this award very late, and indeed, I should have got this award long back.”
She also received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the V. Shantaram Awards in 2009.
The story of the film ‘Taj aur Talwar’-1956 was…..
Thakur Vijay Singh is the ruler of the jagir. His daughter is rajkumari Shanti. One day, while on an outing with sahelis,Rajkumari Shanti finds a young handsome man wounded and unconscious on the road. With the help of others, she brings him to her palace. She tends him, nurses him back to good health and in the meantime, also falls in his love. While they are busy singing and taking rounds around the customary tree etc, her father does not approve of all this,as he wants that she should become the ruler after him. His commander of army,Rana jung bahadur, has an eye on the jagir and he is waiting for an opportunity.
One day,Rajkumari Shanti ,in the disguise of her maid, goes out to meet Amar, her lover. Rana comes to know about it through his cronies and informs the thakur immediately. The Thakur orders Rana to attack the lover Amar.
The trusted maid of rajkumari learns about it and she goes in the disguise of Rajkumari,to inform and warn the lovers. The soldiers of rans kill this maid thinking that she is the Rajkumari. Rana captures the Thakur and declares himself the ruler.Amar, who is actually a popular dacoit and helper of poor people, and Rajkumari Shanti go underground. They gather an army of loyal friends and attack Rana. In the final duel rana is killed,Thakur is rescued and reinstated as the ruler.
Thakur Vijay Singh pardons Amar.Amar and Shanti get married.
Now something about the film’s musical side. There were 10 songs in the film. There were 6 lyricists. One was the producer Satya Roy himself. In case of C grade films, the financiers or the producers had the extra rights to meddle in any department of the filmmaking. Some wrote lyrics, some directed the films and some even acted. In this film the producer not only wrote lyrics, but also acted. In addition to 6 Lyricists, there were 6 singers too. The MD sang a song and one singer wrote the lyrics. Ismail Azad Qawwal, the singer, wrote his own song.
His qawwali ‘Hamen to loot liya’ from Al Hilal-1958 made him very popular. His first song was in the film Vijaygarh-1954, then came Taj aur Talwar-56, Jahaji Lutera-57, Al Hilal-58, Alam Ara ki Beti-60, Pedro-60, Jadu mahal-62, Madam Zorro-62 etc. Unfortunately Ismail azad Qawwal was killed in a firing when he was doing a qawwali program,in 1964.
Now let us enjoy today’s 68 year old qawwali by Ismail Azad Qawwal……

Lyrics
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
sajan albele balam albele ae ae ae
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
sajan albele balam albele ae ae ae
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
sajan albele balam albele ae ae ae
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
sajan albele balam albele ae ae ae
shaam se sama pe bauchhaar hai parvaanon kee
khairiyat ab nazar aatee naheen deewaanon kee
kuchh khabar bhee hai tujhe
roothh ke jaane waale
be-bulaaye bhee chale aate hain aane waale
ke tere saathhee hain taaron ke mele
tere saathhee hain taaron ke mele
bahaaron ke mele
khushee ke jhamele ae ae ae
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
sajan albele balam albele ae ae ae
shaam e hasrat meree nigaah(?) mein koi baat naheen
aaj ya main naheen ya tum naheen ya raat naheen
tu ek laal hai kashmir ke nageenon mein
tera jawaab kahaan Misr ke haseenon mein
isee liye to shab e gham e khushnaseeb tujhe
pukaarta hai ye kah kar koi ghareeb tujhe
ke choree choree sadaayen de de
choree choree sadaayen de de
mere albele mera dil lele ae ae ae
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
sajan albele balam albele ae ae ae
khushee ka daur hai
aur do dilon ka saathh naheen
ye chaand raat haqeeqat mein chaand raat naheen
khabar na thhee ke mohabbat aazaad hotee hai
har ek haseen kee neeyat kharaab hotee hai
jo raaz baksha hai
to aake taaj bhi de ja
diya hai dard to uska ilaaj bhee de ja
saara jeevan hai sang sang khele
saara jeevan hai sang sang khele
ranga rang khele akele dukele ae ae ae
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
sajan albele balam albele ae ae ae
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
aaja aaja ke hum hain akele
