‘Wanted’ (1961) was produced by Tony Walker under his banner, Golden Films and was directed by N A Ansari. The cast included Vijay Kumar, Sayeeda Khan, Johny Walker, Shammi, Rajan Kapoor, Nazeer Hussain, N A Ansari, Anwar Hussan, Helen, Manorama, Dulari etc. This was Tony Walker’s first film as a producer in which he launched his younger brother, with a screen name of Vijay Kumar as a lead actor. Probably, this is the only film in which all the three brothers – Johny Walker (Badruddin Kazi), Tony Walker (Kamaluddin Kazi) and Vijay Kumar (Waheeduddin Kazi) worked together.
The film is a typical N A Ansari style of an action drama in which the villain is ruthless and dispassionate for attaining his objective in a planned manner with a calm and composed behaviour. The other ingredients in such type of his films is the mixer of romance, comedy, action, a couple of western dances, some melodramatic scenes and lastly, the ‘fight to finish’ which will end with villain’s arrest or death. And in most of his films, N A Ansari would don the villain’s role branding with fedora type hat, a long coat and pipe/cigar in his mouth. He would have some catchy dialogues too.
The film’s story in nutshell is of a prosperous businessman who has been living happily with his wife and a daughter of a marriable age. His life has been going on smoothly in a luxurious way. However, one day, his past starts haunting him during which he and his partner had indulged in illegal activities. The police are looking out for both of them with a reward. The other rogue partner who is on the run, comes to know about his partner’s legitimate prosperous business. He plans to grab his business in a meticulous way. On the threat of his exposure, first, the rogue partner joins his business as a manager. Thereafter, he forces him to agree to make him equal partner in the business. Lastly, he demands to marry his businessman-partner’s only daughter to complete his grabbing operations. However, there is a catch in his last plan to become successful. The businessman’s daughter is already in love with another person and they are not amenable to his threat of exposure.
The story in details of the film is as under:
Seth Deendayal (Anwar Hussain) is the owner of his automobile business who stays with his wife (Manorama) and their only daughter, Sarita (Sayeeda Khan) in a palatial house. He has his personal driver, Vilayati (Johny Walker) who is more of his entertaining companion than the driver. Chamki (Shammi) is the constant companion of Sarita. Seth Deendayal is a happy man with all the luxuries in his life. His happiness would be complete only when he gets a good bridegroom for his daughter, Sarita.
Another family, Ramesh (Nazir Hussain) stays with his wife (Dulari) and his college going younger brother, Deepak (Vijay Kumar). Ramesh works in Seth Deendayal’s office and barely manages his household expenses. However, Deepak, unmindful of his elder brother’s financial condition, believes in merry making, attending late night parties and going on picnic etc which is resented by Ramesh. However, his wife always shields him from the onslaught of her husband.
During a picnic, Deepak becomes friendly with Sarita which, after a couple of meetings, turns into a love affair. They often meets with the connivance of Vilayati and Chamki who drives them to their meeting places. One day, Seth Deendayal is called in the police station where Sarita and Deepak have come after Deepak has been chased by residence of a building thinking him to be a child-lifter. Just to save herself, Sarita introduces Deepak as Prince who owns a hotel. She explains the circumstances which brought them together in the police station. When Deepak had gone into a building to rescue a child from falling, the residents of building pounced upon him thinking him to be a child-lifter. She and Vilayati saved him from the residents. Seth Deendayal is impressed and he invites Prince for a dinner party assuming that he belongs to a rich family and probably his prospective son-in-law.
While everything was going smoothly in the life of Seth Deendayal, one day, a person named Sardarilal (N A Ansari), calls on Seth Deendayal who is surprised to see him as it has opens up his past link. Once Hiralal (now Seth Deendayal) and Sardarilal were partners in the illegal activities off the seacoast of Burma. However, Hiralal gave up the illegal activities and started his new business in automobiles in Mumbai under a new name of Seth Deendayal. Sardarilal has now assumed a new name, Khanna. Police are scouting for him as well as Hiralal and have offered reward for anyone providing information about them.
Khanna has evaluated the business of Seth Deendayal and has meticulously planned to take over his business. First, he seeks a job in his company which he gets as a manager. After some time, he wants him to include him in his business as an equal partner, through signing an agreement of partnership. Seth Deendayal has no option but to agree against the threat of exposing him. It is only when Khanna has demanded to marry Sarita to complete the grabbing of Seth Deendayal’s business, things become complicated as Deepak is already in love with Sarita and Seth Deendayal smells the real intention of Khanna.
With the intention of Khanna becoming very clear to Seth Deendayal, he decides to get Sarita married to Deepak so that at least his wealth and property will go in good hands. He gets Sarita engaged to Deepak. To discredit Deepak in the eyes of Seth Deendayal, Khanna gets him implicated as a thief of costly necklace which makes Seth Deendayal to break the Sarita’s engagement with Deepak. Seth Deendayal writes a Deed of Will bequeathing his all wealth and property to his wife and daughter. Before he completes the Will, Khanna with the gun in hand forces him to change the Will in favour of him and Sarita getting married to him.
Fed-up with constant blackmailing by Khanna, one day Seth Deendayal decides to shoot Khanna by inviting him to his chamber for a discussion. However, Khanna is one step ahead of him. He kills Seth Deendayal through the window of his chamber. At that time, to prove his innocence, Deepak comes with a person who has actually done the theft of the necklace. However, he finds a dead Seth Deendayal. Again, Khanna is successful in implicating Deepak as the killer which makes Deepak on the run avoiding the police. By this time, the entire household of Seth Deendayal and Ramesh come to know of the actual identity of Khanna by a newspaper advertisement of police looking for him. Sarita goes to police station informing them the whereabout of Khanna, With the help of Vilayati and Deepak, police team raid his house and during the fight, Khanna gets killed. Deepak and Sarita unite.
The film had seven songs written by Shakeel Badayuni which were set to music by Ravi. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘raat bhar gardish mein saaqee aaj paimaanaa raje’ rendered by Asha Bhosle. The song is picturised on a dancing Helen during a family dinner party hosted by Seth Deendayal (Anwar Hussain) for Deepak (Vijay Kumar) who has assumed a new name, ‘Prince’ to hoodwink Seth Deendayal as a wealthy man. In the picturisation, Anwar Hussain, Manorama, Vijay Kumar, Sayeeda Khan, N A Ansari, Johny Walker and Shammi can be seen.
