Today’s song is from a Mythological film- Navratri-1955.

The word ‘Navratri’ evokes memories of the festive atmosphere of Dussehra and the following fun days of Diwali, just about 3 weeks ahead. During our childhood, this was the time to buy new clothes or something which the parents had promised to give us at Diwali time. In the evening a gang of surrounding friends used to go visiting our friends in other areas. Meeting elders and seeking their blessings was mandatory.

Nowadays, new clothes are bought anytime of the year. children are pampered with desired gifts round the year. No need for any festival. In fact, these days there is a “problem of plenty”. This imbibes into the child’s mind to get the things demanded. They don’t learn to digest a “NO” for their wishes and this causes problems in later years of their life. No doubt social systems change by every generation, but the changes we (senior citizens) see now are beyond our acceptance. People of my age are watching fourth generation (father, self, children and Grandchildren) and they feel the shocking changes. Anyway, this is a separate topic of discussion !

India is a country of festivals. In every month of the year there is some or the other festival on an All India basis. Add to it the local festivals exclusive to every state. This proves what is said with great pride “Unity in Diversity”. Now take a look at this….

January- makar sankranti
February. – Maha shivratri
March – Holi
April – New year of different states, Ram navmi, hanuman jayanti
May – Buddha jayanti, Akshay tritiya
June – Uttarayan ends, Dakshinayan starts
July – Guru Purnima, Ramzan, Pandharpur yatra
August – Rakhi, naag panchami, ganesh Chaturthi, Independence day
September – Ganesh Visarjan, Start of navratri
October – Dassehra, Diwali, Bakri eid
November – Tulsi Vivah, guru nanak Jayanti
December – Christmas

Every month has some festival to celebrate but nowadays Nuclear families sans elderly persons, do not require a festival. They celebrate anything anytime.

Film navratri-1955 was produced by R.U.Patel and Natwar Shyam. It was directed by Raman Desai, who was famous for directing religious and mythological films in Hindi and Gujarati. There was another film director with the same name, at the same time- Raman Desai. This caused confusion and after a few films, they started putting father’s name into their names like Raman B. Desai and Raman L. Desai. The music was by the king of melody- Chitragupt. Asha sang 5 solos and 3 duets with Rafi. The cast of the film was Nirupa Roy, Manhar Desai, D.K.Sapru, S.N.Tripathi, Lalita Pawar, Kumkum, Krishna Kumar and many others.

The story of the film was ….

Mahishasur, the mighty Demon-King had spread a reign of terror in every nook and corner of the world. Blood of innocent people flowed like water. There was no safety of person or property. Religion and chastity of women were in jeopardy, every moment, at the hands of the vulture-like Rakshasas. People were cowed down, as the hands of the beastly tyrant had crushed all opposition. All the vanquished Kings and Princes cowardly accepted his slavery to save their lives.

Prince Shatrughna was the only exception. For not accepting his sovereignty he was ordered to be killed by throwing down from a hill-top. But he escaped bravely. Saranyu, the beautiful and daring daughter of Mahamuni Twashta had undertaken the task of spreading the spirit of revolt against the oppressive rule of Mahish. But as fate would have it, Mahish happened to see her one day and her charming beauty captured his heart. He proposed to make her his queen and on her declining that offer, tried to molest her. Luckily, however, Prince Shatrughna arrived at the nick of time and saved her honour.

Cupid’s dart struck the young hearts of Saranyu and Shatrughna. But they preferred to dedicate their lives to the service of the people and some how bring about the destruction of Mahish. The fragrance of saranyus beauty had reached even the celestial heights of Swarga-lok. And Devraj Indra, personally went to Mahamuni Twashta to request for her hand. But the splendour and riches of even Indra-lok had no attraction for Saranyu. She rejected Indra’s offer too. Mahish sent his soldiers to abduct Saranyu forcibly, But before they could succeed, Indra took her away.

This enraged Mahish so much that he ordered to invade Swarga, immediately. But Narad Muni advised him to first acquire superior strength than Indra, by performing Tapasya. When Saranyu refused to marry him, Indra tried to fulfil his desire by force-but Shachidevi, Indra’s wife, interrupted him and sent her back to her father’s Ashram. Mahish pleased Brahma by his penance, and obtained a boon of virtual immortality from him viz. No one, except a woman, could kill him in the three worlds.

Intoxicated by this boon, he proclaimed himself as God-issued a fiat to worship none but him and mercilessly persecuted and put to death thousands of devotees who persisted in worshipping Lord vishnu, shanker and Goddess Adya Shakti, in defiance of his orders. Suloma, the kind-hearted queen of Mahishasur several times tried to persuade and prevent Mahish from the path of sin-but to no purpose. He invaded Swarga-lok also, defeated Indra in a war and humiliated him as well as Indrani, by inhuman tortures.

In the meantime, Mahamuni Twashta had married Saranyu to prince Shatrughna. But Mahish had, still, not forgotten Saranyu. He got her kidnapped just on her wedding night. When Saranyu did not yield to his several tactics-mahish blinded Mahamuni Twashtas eyes with hot iron bars, in her presence and also killed her husband, before her eyes. But the true Sati, as she was, Saranyu remained firm in her pious resolve. Then from the Lights of all the Gods-Goddess Durga was born. Bhagwati Durga Mata kills the proud Mahishasur, she revives Sati Saranya’s husband to life, the blind Mahamuni Twashta regains his lost eyesight and Suloma sacrifices her life for a just and noble cause.

Very few people know that Manhar Desai and Shahu Modak, who were often seen in Mythological films in the roles of Hindu Gods, were both Christians !

Manhar Desai was a Gujarati Christian-real name Malcolm Alfredo D’souza. He was born on 3-8-1917. He used to stammer when he was a boy. He used to act and sing in dramas and due to his stammering style, he was very popular on stage. After completing High school, he ran away to Bombay to join Films, but could not even enter any studio, Disappointed, he returned to his home and restarted studies. He became normal with treatment. He joined Wilson college in Bombay for graduation. In college he started acting and singing on stage. He had a friend N.C.Pandey, who was also mad after films. He promised Manhar that if he becomes a Director, he will make Manhar a Hero. While in college Manhar married his classmate, who was from U.P.

In 1947, Manhar got a call from his friend N.C.Pandey, who was to direct a Hindi film. He made Manhar the Hero of this film and thus fulfilled his promise. Toofani Sawar-47 was the first film of Manhar Desai, in Hindi. He was invited to work in the film Gunsundari-48 ( Gujarati), opposite Nirupa Roy. The film was Hit and he acted in the next film Mangal Phera-49 with Nirupa Roy. This too became a Hit film in Gujarati and then there was no looking back. His next Hindi film was Madhosh-51 opposite Meena kumari. Following their success in Gujarati, Nirupa Roy and Manhar were paired in several Mythological films in Hindi. Films Naag Panchami-53 and Shivratri-54 made him a popular Hero in Hindi mythological films.

It is a coincidence that the Two film stars known for Mythological films, namely Shahu Modak and Manhar Desai, both were Non Hindus and were Christian.

Manhar Desai was fond of Reading. During breaks in shooting, he would catch up with his reading. He also was a good painter. Manhar worked in 106 Hindi films. His last film was Nal Damyanti-88. In the last phase of his career, he was disillusioned about working in films in this era, so he gave up working and retired. Manhar Desai died on 25-2-1992.

Here is a melodious song by Asha Bhosle and chorus. Let us enjoy this 70 year old song….
