Today’s song is a rare song by Meena Mangeshkar from the film Aabroo-1956.
Meena Mangeshkar is the number two of the 4 Mangeshkar sisters – Lata, Meena, Asha and Usha, with the youngest sibling being their brother Hridaynath. Meena was born on 8-9-1931 to Master Deenanath Mangeshkar and wife Shevanti. Like other sisters, Meena too got education in Music from her father and other experts, but she never entered the film line for singing, because she got married to Vasant Khadikar, a businessman, quite early as per prevailing norms those days. By the way, Meena is the only one among the 4 sisters to have been married to a single person throughout her life. Lata and Usha never got married while Asha was the most experienced. She had 3 Life partners. Meena lost her husband in 2011. She has a son-Yogesh and a daughter-Rachana.
Although, Meena sang very well and she had a good singing voice, she did not do much work in Hindi films. In all, she sang only 12 songs in 10 Hindi films, namely Annadata-52, Farmaish-53, Pilpili Saheb-54, Chandni Chowk-54, Patrani-56, Aabroo-56, Mother India-57, Gateway of India-57, Arpan aka Anjali-57 and Iss paar ya uss paar-1990. She gave music to 1 Hindi film-Kanoon ka shikar-1978. Her assistant was Anil Mohile.
Out of her 12 songs, the Blog Statistics show 7 songs covered, but on the Home page column only 6 songs are credited to her name. When I checked all her covered songs, I found that a song from the film Mother India-57 (Duniya mein hum aaye to jeena hi padega) is not credited to her yet. Hope this anomaly will be corrected soon.
Film Aabroo was made in 1943, 1956 and 1968 with the same title. In the 1956 film the director was Chaturbhuj Doshi and the music was by Bulo C Rani, ably assisted by C Arjun. The cast was Kamini Kaushal, Kishore Kumar, Smriti Biswas, Moti Sagar, Madan puri, Anwari, Indira Bansal, Uma Devi etc.etc.
In the Hindi film industry, there are 4 types of people.
The first type is those people, who join this industry, struggle very hard and succeed in fulfilling their dreams, for example Guru Dutt, Mehboob, Johnny Walker, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd.Rafi etc. who are well known to all by now.
The second type of people are those who join the industry, struggle very hard ,do not succeed and leave dejected.
The third type is those people who have a filmi connection or a strong luck, who join, struggle a bit and succeed like for example, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Dilip kumar, Rakesh and Rajesh Roshan, Anand Milind, Nanda, Nargis, Meena Kumari etc
And….. the fourth type is those people who join the industry, struggle very hard and succeed partly, but end up doing something else, to keep them sustaining here.
The industry is full of people of the fourth type. People who come with dreams in their eyes, but end up doing something else. People who start as a Hero in 2-3 films, settle for side roles and finally character roles, like Dev Kumar, Sujit kumar, Jeevan etc.
Not only this but we have examples where they started with something else and ended with a totally different thing and succeeded. For Example, Guru Dutt started as a Choreographer/dance Director (Lakharani-45) and ended up Actor/Director, Ashok kumar started as a Lab Technician in photography but became a great actor and Amiya Chakravarty who started as a Bangla Teacher and a Canteen Manager in Bombay Talkies, for which later he directed finest movies.
In olden days, when the Studio system was there, Artistes used to be employed on a monthly basis and they had to do whatever work was given as per their capability. For example, in Ranjit Studios over 700 people were on the rolls at one time(The Government had to open a Ration shop inside the studio premises for them) from where actors were made out of script writers and the Director wrote songs ! So people joined the industry with a mind prepared to do whatever job, just to succeed in their ambition.
MOTI SAGAR was one such person who came to the industry to become a Hero, but ended up doing sundry roles, singing songs, writing stories and scripts and producing films. He ,however, could not get great success in any of these and ended up being ‘Jack of all trades, Master of None’.
MOTI SAGAR was born in New Delhi on 16-4-1925, but graduated from Lahore. In Lahore he got interested in acting in films. Then he met Inayat Hussain and G.A. Chishti-the composers and he loved singing. He came to Bombay in 1946. His cousins Motilal, Mukesh and Tara Harish were already there in films. Harish and Motilal were established, and Mukesh was trying very hard.
Moti Sagar did a second hero’s role in MALHAR-1951.
He sang his first song under Bulo C. Rani in GUL SANOBER-53 with Kalyani. Then came Pamposh, Shikar, Deewali ki raat, Makhichoos, Jai Mahadev, Salgirah, Film hi film, and Prerana.
When he stopped getting songs and roles, he switched over to writing. He wrote stories for Badal, Lalkaar, Charas, Ram Bharose. He acted in 13 films. He directed 2 films, namely Prerana-84 and Tanya-94. He wrote songs also for the film Prerana-84. He sang 13 songs in 9 films.
When this stopped he produced 2 films Hum Tere Ashiq hai and Badal. So, Moti Sagar was an Actor, Director, Producer, Lyricist, and a Singer After 1994, he retired. He died on 14-3-1999. Preeti Sagar is his daughter. She too was a struggling singer.
The film Aabroo- 1956 was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. During the early era of talkie films, till the 1960s, there was a horde of Gujarati directors and producers. Bhatts, Trivedi, Thakur, Shahs, Desais, Pancholi, Doshi, Daves were some names frequently found directing various genres. Usually they specialised in certain classes and types of films. The Bhatts (Shankar and Vijay) liked to do Mythological films, Ramnik Shah handled stunt, action, fantasy films, Jayant Desai was social film oriented etc.
Chaturbhuj Doshi (1894–1969) was a Hindi and Gujarati writer-director of Indian cinema. He was one of the top Gujarati screenplay writers, who helped script stories for the Punatar productions. He is stated to be one of the leading figures who launched the Gujarati film industry with work on notable films like ‘Gunsundari’ (1948) and ‘Nanand Bhojai’ (1948). He was ‘well known’ for his family socials and had become ‘a celebrity in his own right’. He made a name for himself as a journalist initially and was referred to as the ‘famous journalist’ & publicist by Baburao Patel, editor of Filmindia.
His debut film as a director was ‘Gorakh Aya’ (1938), produced by Ranjit Movietone, though he joined Ranjit in 1929, as a scriptwriter. In 1938, he directed another film for Ranjit, a social comedy, ‘The Secretary’, and both films were box-office successes for Doshi. His forte was socials, regularly adapting stories and novels for films. He worked initially on comedies like ‘Secretary’ and ‘Musafir’ (1940), but then ‘shifted to more significant films’.
Chaturbhuj Anandji Doshi was born in 1894 in Kathiawad, Gujarat, British India. He was educated at the University of Bombay, after graduation he started work as a journalist for a daily, Hindustan (1926), working for editor Indulal Yagnik. His entry into films was working as a scenarist in the silent era for directors like Jayant Desai, Nandlal Jaswantlal & Nanubhai Vakil. He joined Ranjit Movietone in 1929, and wrote stories and screenplay for several of Ranjit films.
Film ‘Gorakh Aya’ (Gorakh has come) in 1938, was the first film directed by Doshi. It was produced by Ranjit Movietone with screenplay by Gunvantrai Acharya & dialogues by PL Santoshi. The music, termed ‘good’ , was composed by Gyan Dutt. ‘The Secretary’ (1938), was a “riotous comedy”, starring Madhuri, Trilok Kapoor. Charlie. The music was composed by Gyan Dutt, who became a regular in most of the films directed by Doshi. Musafir in 1940 was a comedy costume drama, which had Charlie playing a prince.
‘Bhakta Surdas’, a devotional film directed by Doshi in 1942, is stated to be the “most famous” of the several versions made. It starred KL Saigal and Khursheed “the singing idol(s) of millions”, winning “unprecedented popularity” everywhere.
‘Mehemaan’ (1942) starred Madhuri, Ishwarlal, Shamim and Mubarak. Music director Bulo C. Rani had come to Bombay in 1942, and joined Ranjit Studios assisting Khemchand Prakash in music direction.
Doshi helped enormously in the development of Gujarati cinema. During 1948-49 he directed three successful Gujarati films which “brought immense success to the industry”. The success of the Gujarati film ‘Kariyavar’ in 1948, directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi from a story by Shaida, called Vanzari Vav, helped establish the Gujarati film industry along with other films like ‘Vadilo Ne Vanke’ (1948) by Ram Chandra Thakur and ‘Gadono Bel’ (1950) by Ratibhai Punatar. His next Gujarati film was ‘Jesal Toral’ (1948) based on folk-lore, which proved a big box-office success. In 1949, Doshi directed another Gujarati film, ‘Vevishal’, an adaptation of Meghani’s novel of the same name.
He also wrote stories, and one of his stories ‘Pati Bhakti’ was used in the Tamil film ‘En Kanawar’ (1948) produced by Ajit Pictures, which starred the Veena maestro, Sundaram Balachander, who was also the debut director and music composer for the film. In all he directed 24 Hindi films. His last Hindi film was ‘Sanskar’ (1958). He had also written a few songs in the film ‘Maya Bazaar’ (1932).
Chaturbhuj Doshi died on 21 January 1969 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. Filmography-

The famous Record Collector and Music Historian shri Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji sent me this song on my request and our Sadanand Kamath ji uploaded it for me on his You Tube Channel. I thank shri Girdharilal ji and Sadanand ji for their help. Today’s song will be Meena’s 8th song on this Blog. Now only 4 songs are remaining. Today’s song is from the film Mazdoor-1945, made by Filmistan. The film was directed by Nitin Bose (26-4-1897 to 14-4-1986).
After leaving New Theatres, Calcutta due to a dispute with B.N.Sircar, he decided to shift to Bombay. His dispute with Sircar was so bitter that Nitin Bose did not even see his last directed film ” Kashinath”-1943, till the end of his life. Before he came to Bombay, his name had already become famous here and many big studios were eager to employ him.
His first film in Bombay was Mujrim-44, made under the banner of Vishnu Cinetone, owned by V.M.Vyas. The film did average business. He was then invited to Filmistan, by S. Mukherjee, who was known to him, being a Bengali. The film was Mazdoor, based on the problems of labourers. This was his second film in Bombay. After this film Nitin Bose was called by Bombay Talkies, another studio which gave opportunities to capable Bengalees.
The cast of the film Mazdoor-45 was full of new actors. The Music Director was also a B grade one- Hari Prasanna Dass. The Lyricist was G.S.Nepali. The cast of the film consisted of Indumati, Veera, Nasir khan, K.N.Singh, Radhakishen and others.
Nasir Khan (1-10-1924 to 1-5-1974) was making his Debut in this film. He was known as the younger brother of Dilip Kumar- who himself Debuted with the film Jwar Bhata-1944, just an year back. Indumati became a Heroine for the first and last time. Later she did only character roles. Veera was a Parsi girl. She too was Debuting in this film as a second Heroine. That meant that all the leading actors were new and were making their Debut. In this case, Nasir Khan, unknowingly emulated his elder brother who too debuted with a Debutante heroine- Mrudula, in the film Jwaar Bhata-1944.
There were 6 songs in the film. I have heard all the songs and I find them good songs.
The Music Director HARI PRASANN DASS (1905-1989) was born in Chittagong in 1905. He became a well known Bengali Composer. His 26 Bengali films made his name known in the music circle in Calcutta in late 30s and 40s. He was assistant to Pankaj Malik in films Dushman and Kapal Kundala-1939.
Hemant Kumar Mukherjee was his assistant in Bengali film ‘Byabdhan’-1939. It was H P Dass who gave his FIRST Bengali film song to Hemant Kumar in the film ‘Nimai Sanyas’-1941. Till that time Hemant had only private songs to his credit.
In 1952, H P Dass gave music to NAGORIK , along with Ustad Bahadur Khan, a complete English film-an art film for international audiences-made by the legendary filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak. This was a film even before Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali, but due to some reason this film was released only on 20-9-1977, after the death of Ritwik Ghatak. It is said that despite ill health, H P Dass went to New Empire Theatre in Calcutta to see this film.
K.C.Dey was a good friend of HP Das and sang many Bengali songs and Bhajans for him. On his recommendation, H P Dass took Manna Dey as his assistant in Hindi films Veerangana-1947,Sati Toral-1947 and Hum bhi Insaan Hai-1948. It is believed that after hearing Manna Dey’s music and songs in this film, Raj Kapoor invited him to sing for his films later on.
His first Hindi film as a MD was New India Films’ Blood Feud (or Josh-E-Inteqam)- 1935. His other films were Mohabbat-43, Meena-44, Kadambari-44, Mazdoor-45, Begum-45, Insaaf-46, Veerangana-47, Sati Toral-47 and Hum bhi insaan hai-48.
He died on 26-9-1989.
Now let us know something about the leading ladies, since they are new names for most.
INDUMATI LELE (Born 18 December 1927 – Died 11 September 2013), forgotten Yesteryears Indian Theatre and Film Actress turned Folk Artiste.
Indumati and Kumudini Lele who were once famous as ‘Lele Sisters’ in Hindi and Marathi Theatre and Cinema fields, have been forgotten today. Indumati Lele, died at the age of 86, when she was still working as an examiner for the television program ‘Dum Damadam’.
Kumud and Indumati, were both known as ‘Lele Sisters” in the fifties. Both of them originally hailed from Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh. Their father Girdhar Lele was in Government job as Director of Agriculture, at Indore. From an early age, the two sisters loved acting and dancing. Both were involved in dance and dance related activities in their school. Prithviraj Kapoor saw the two at one of the school events and talked to their father and brought them straight to Mumbai. For the next two years, both sisters worked as artists in Prithviraj Kapoor’s ‘Prithvi Theatres” until the company closed. They played different roles in several of his Plays and had the fortune of touring India all along with Prithviraj Kapoor.
While Kumudini acted in Bimal Roy’s ‘Parivar’, ‘Bandini’ etc. and in few Marathi films like ‘Ram Ram Pauna’ etc., Indumati Lele acted in Prithviraj Kapoor’s’ Shakuntala’ and other plays. She also acted in some films while working in ‘Prithvi Theaters’, like Mazdoor-45, ‘Shehnai’ (1947), ‘Aag’ (1948), ‘Sunahare Din’ (1949), ‘Gauna’ (1950), ‘Chaudhwin ka Chand’ (1960), ‘Budtameez’ (1966), ‘Man Mandir’ (1971), to name a few. In Raj Kapoor’s ‘Aag’ (1948), she acted as his mother. She also appeared in two English films, ‘Householder’ with Leela Naidu and ‘Shakespearewallah” both with Shashi Kapoor.
Veera was from a Parsi family. Her full name was Veera Ankaleshwaria. Obviously, her family came from Ankaleshwar, a small industrial town(now), in Gujarat. She started her career in films as a Heroine opposite Nasir khan in the film Mazdoor-1945. Then came Shikari-46 and later Eight days-46, both had Ashok Kumar as the Hero. Both the films were from Filmistan. Her last film as Heroine was Tohfa, opposite Rehman and Leela opposite Agha , both films from 1947. Then she stopped getting Heroine roles and shifted to side roles. In all she did 22 films.
Her other films were, Veena, Ziddi, Chanda ki Chandani- all 48, Sanwaria-49, Hamara Ghar and hamari beti- 1950, Hamari shaan, Ramjanma and Sagar-1951, Aasmaan, izzat, Moti mahal, Sanskar and Shin shinaki boobla boo-all1952, Dana Pani-53, Boot polish and Sheeshe ki deewar both 1954.
She married Mohsin Abdulla, who had worked in Bombay Talkies as a writer. He was the younger brother of actress Renuka Devi ( Begum Mirza). After the marriage, both migrated to Pakistan in 1955. No news after that.
About Nasir Khan, I have written about him in my earlier posts, so I will not repeat it.
The Film India magazine issue of June 1946 gives a review of this film. Surprisingly, Baburao patel has some good words about this film, though mostly the review is critical of Direction and the story. The story of the film revolves around Hero and his 2 loves, with a background of Labourer’s problems. The film has taken inspiration from the Hollywood film ” How green is my valley”-1941. The story, in short, is….
Nasir khan is in love with a village girl-Indumati. He leaves for the city to get a job. He saves a mill owner’s(K.N.Singh) daughter-Veera from a car accident. He is taken to her house as he is wounded in this process. He recovers and is made Manager of the mill. Veera falls in his love. Meanwhile Indumati and her mother-Moti, suffer in the village. They too come to the city and Indumati gets a job in the same Mill. There are Labour problems in the Mill and 2 groups compete with each other. Finally there is confrontation between the Unions and the Mill owner. Nasir khan, at the end, exposes the Mill owner and joins the Union leader, thus uniting with Indumati.
The film was released on 18-5-1946 in the Roxy Theatre of Bombay. It seems the film did reasonable business. Today’s song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki. This is the second song from this movie to appear in the blog.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film- Shri Krishna Bhakti-1955. Made under the banner of Combined films Traders, Bombay, it was directed by the Wizard of Trick scenes- Babubhai Mistry. MD was my favourite- Chitragupta. All the 8 songs of this film were written by G S Nepali.
Hindu religion describes how the 10 Avatars of Lord Vishnu (Dashavataar) actually represent the Evolution of the Human race. The 10 Avatars were…
1. | Matsya….Life started from water. |
2. | Kachha(Tortoise)…. First Amphibian who learned to live both in Sea and on Land. |
3. | Varaah (The Boar)….Life solely on Land. |
4. | Narsimha….Half qualities of Animal and half of Human. |
5. | Waman….Developing Humans. |
6. | Parshuram….Human ruled by Emotions |
7. | Shri Ram….Perfect Human being. |
8. | Shri Krishna….Survival amongst the opposition. |
9. | The Buddha….Extreme stage of Sacrifice |
10. | Kalki….End of Anarchy and present set up, to start a New Age all over again….Yet to come. |
The most popular among these are, of course, Ram and Krishna. But what was the necessity of these Avatars at all ? Answer to this is in Bhagwad Geeta. BHAGAVAD GITA is one of our cultural heritage books. It is a part of Mahabharat and is also a part of Bramhopnishad-which is a scripture on Yogas.
This is a dialogue between Lord Shri Krishna and Arjun. The legend says that when Kauravas and Pandavas stood opposite each others for a war on Kurukshetra, Dhritrashtra, the blind father of Kauravas asked Sanjay- who had the divine power of seeing the war at Kurukshetra- to describe him the war happenings. Sanjay starts and in the course of his reporting, the entire Geeta too is narrated.
Without going into the details further, enough to stress that Lord Shrikrishna explains to Arjuna that, whenever there is a decline of Dharma and righteousness, He takes birth from age to age (sambhavami yuge yuge), to protect the virtuous, destroy evil-doers and to reestablish Dharma and righteousness.
This is described in the IV chapter, stanzas 7 and 8 in Bhagavad Gita thus-
“Yada Yada Hi Dharmasya
Glanirva Bhavathi Bharatha,
Abhyuthanam Adharmaysya
Tadatmanam Srijami Aham’.Bhagavad Gita (Chapter IV-7)
“Whenever there is decay
of righteousness O! Bharatha
And a rise of unrighteousness
then I manifest Myself!”Praritranaya Sadhunam
Vinashaya Cha Dushkritam
Dharamasansthapnaya
Sambhavami Yuge-Yuge.”Bhagavat Gita (Chapter IV-8)
“For the protection of the good,
for the destruction of the wicked and
for the establishment of righteousness,
I am born in every age.”
Indian filmmakers have made several films on the stories associated with these two Avatars- Ram and Krishn. Lord Ram has always been hailed as the “Purushottam” or the complete man. Personally, I feel that Characters like Shri Ram are not suitable for this age. For today’s times, the best suited is Krishna. While Ram taught us how to rule righteously, Krishna taught us how to win over the Villains and be successful. In today’s context, Krishn-Niti is more suitable,I aver. When your righteous living is in danger due to evil forces, you can not remain like a Purshottam. You will need to adopt Krishn Niti for survival. The best difference between these two can be explained by this Shlok.
Shri Ram – Ahinsa Parmo Dharmah….There is nothing greater than Non violence.
Shri Krishna – Dharma Hinsa tathaiva cha….You are justified to pick up arms for a just cause.
For the last 100 odd years, we were taught only the first part, but now we realise the second part is more suitable for our survival, in these times. Krishna Niti says, there is nothing wrong to adopt unconventional methods if your Right Cause is facing strong opposition. Lord Krtishna’s life was full of interesting episodes and therefore I like Krishna more than Ram, for his relevance to modern times.
Today’s song is from a film which depicts the story of a Krishn Bhakt. It is about how the devotee is saved from imminent death. The story of the film is….
In a village lives a boastful Bramhin Balbhadra Shastri and Cheta-the Krishn Bhakta Harijan. One day Cheta invites several Sadhus for food, whom Balbhadra had insulted. At the time of meals, the Sadhus get more than enough food. At the same time, food from Balbhadra’s house disappears. This enrages Balbhadra Shastri. On Janmashtami day, Shanti- Balbhadra’s daughter serves Prasad to Seva, son of Cheta. Balbhadra is very angry and hits Seva. He becomes unconscious. Same time the Idol in the temple disappears miraculously. People are afraid and request Cheta to invoke God to come back. Cheta sings a Bhajan and Seva comes alive and at the same time the Temple idol returns. All the people start hailing Cheta.
Balbhadra is very angry and decides to kill Cheta, but in the melee, instead of Cheta, Balbhadra kills his own daughter Shanta. Balbhadra accuses Cheta of her murder and takes him to court. Cheta is sentenced to death. On the day of execution, when Cheta is singing a bhajan while on way to the Gallows, suddenly, Shanta comes running and explains that the killed girl was someone else and she was kidnapped. Cheta is freed. Balbhadra repents and Cheta is honoured as a Great Krishn Bhakt.
The great Editor and special effect-Trick scene expert Babubhai Mistri ( 5-9-1918 to 20-12-2010), in the beginning, was an assistant with Prakash pictures.Prakash was making a film “Khwabon ki Duniya”- 37, based on the famous novel “The Invisible Man” by H.G.Wells,1897.The shooting started but the basic problem was how to show the ‘invisible‘ man. There was no special effect technique available in India till then, like in Hollywood.
Vijay Bhatt had an assistant called Babubhai Mistri, who accepted the challenge and using a dim light, a black curtain and a black thread to move articles, he achieved the desired results. This made the film not only a hit and popular one, but also a unique one. Babubhai Mistri, thus, became the father of the trick scenes and special effects in India. In the process, Babubhai also earned a nickname of ‘kaala dhaaga‘ (black thread) for the rest of his life, in the film industry.
Babubhai directed 49 Hindi films-mostly B and C grade Mythologicals, Costume, and Historical films. He also directed 1 Telugu and 9 Gujarati films. His first film as a director was Muqabala-42. Surprisingly he started off with a social film, but there was a valid reason. The initial Poster Painter had developed into a skilled Editor and trick scene expert, by his own hard work, encouraged by the Wadia brothers. The film was an unusual film of a story of twin sisters. Wadias wanted Babubhai to do something which will make the film stand out from all other such films.
Directed by Babubhai Mistry, it was the last movie of Fearless Nadia for Wadia Movietone. She had a double role of twin sisters: good Madhuri and bad Rita.
This film was First in India to use Split-screen method for double roles, where both sisters could cross each others, shake hands and talk together. The other attraction was the Night club set, which, in case of police Raid, could be converted into a respected residence in few minutes. It was a great fun to watch these two things.
A happy ending picture, but to see and hear the laboured Hindi dialogues of Madhuri (good Nadia) was another treat.
Today’s song is a bhajan by Mohd. Rafi and chorus.

Today’s song is from the film Leela-1947.
Film Leela-1947, a Filmistan offering, was directed by Dattaram N Pai. He was actually an Editor with Filmistan. His name appears as a Director first for film Eight Days-1946. That film was actually directed by Ashok kumar, but Dattaram’s name was given as a Director in the credits. His second and last film as a Director was Leela-1947. I suppose, he did try to do justice to the Director’s chair, but after this film, he did not direct any other film. May be, looking at his limitations, Filmistan did not opt for him anymore.
All the 9 songs of the film were written by G S Nepali and Qamar Jalalabadi. The singers were Binapani, Shamshad, Geeta Roy, Amirbai and Chitalkar. The MD was C Ramchandra. The cast of the film was Shobha, Kanu Roy, Veera, V H Desai, Agha, Leela Mishra, Sunalini Devi etc.etc.
The Heroine of this film, Shobha, unfortunately remains an actress about whom no information is available. On going through the HFGK, I find her name in at least 20++ films. Sometimes she is listed as Shobha Devi. Another bit of information about Shobha was that that the actress Lata Sinha, who started as a child star (as Baby Lata) in Riyasat-55 and Nau Do Gyarah-1957 etc. was her daughter. Lata did a good role in Bees saal baad-1962. She mainly acted in action/stunt, costume and other B and C grade films only. She was also in film Bhoot Bungla-1965.
Film Leela-1947 was made by Filmistan. When a dissatisfied, and disillusioned splinter group fell out of Bombay Talkies, Filmistan was a Dream project for them. The important members from this group were S.Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar, Gyan Mukherjee and Rai Bahadur Chunilal. For them founding Filmistan was a goal achievement. For C Ramchandra, finding Filmistan was a goal achievement, because those days he had left Jayant Desai’s company and was looking for another film company. His good old friend Kavi Pradeep, who was close to S.Mukherjee from their Bombay Talkies days, brought in a very lucrative offer from Filmistan and C Ramchandra joined it with pleasure.
Though C Ramchandra had begun his career in 1942 with Sukhi Jeevan, his first Hindi film as a MD, his music had not flourished till he joined Filmistan. The 5 films he had made with Jayant Desai were reasonably good but they were not Hits. It was only in Filmistan he achieved, what one would call-Success. Out of the 11 films that he made here. his success rate was more than 50%. Especially, the music of films like Shehnai-1947, Saajan-1947, Khidki-1948, Nadiya ke par-1948, Patanga-1949, Samadhi-1950 and Anarkali-1953 created songs which are remembered even today. To make songs whose popularity lasted for more than 70++ years, is surely an achievement.
It was also when he was with Filmistan that people were comparing him and Naushad and a discussion always circulated who was the Numero Uno as an MD. Though I am a C Ramchandra Bhakta, I am of the opinion, that in the race of creating everlasting Hit songs, C Ramchandra was no match to Naushad. The strike rate of Naushad’s Hit films was much much more than that of C Ramchandra.
In the year 1946, C Ramchandra gave music to 4 films(1 for Filmistan), in 1947 it was 7 films (4 for Filmistan) and in 48 films were 8 (2 for Filmistan). So, in these 3 years, he did 19 films (7 for Filmistan). The rest comprised of stunt films of Master Bhagwan and other social films. Hit films were -5, all for Filmistan.
During this period, starting with film Safar-1946, his female lead singer was Binapani Mukherjee. She remained so, till Lata Mangeshkar dominated the music of C Ramchandra from 1950 onwards. As such, Binapani was not a great singer and she had limitations. This, precisely, was the reason why her career was limited to only about just 20 odd films with 50 odd songs. Her all popular songs were with C Ramchandra only.
Binapani was born on 17-10-1925, in a music loving family of Calcutta. Initial music training was by her grandfather Sheetal chandra Mukherjee and and later from ustad Sageer Khan of Rampur.
C.Ramchandra gave her first break in playback in film “Muskurahat”-1943. Her first song was-‘Hans le gaa le…’. It was a duet with CR.
Then came Majdoor, Eight days, Darban, Rangbhumi, but she became famous after ‘Safar’-46.
Her most popular song-‘kabhi yaad kar ke,gali paar kar ke,chali aana hamare angana…’ was from this film, as a duet with C Ramchandra.
She also sang in Leela, Mulakat, Shahnai, Samrat Ashok, Satyanarayan, Raaz, Rumaal, Asra, Abla, Bhikari, Fariyad, Laajawab, Ghayal etc.
Her last film was Gyan Dutt’s ‘Ghayal’-1951.
She was the lead singer (female) for C.Ramchandra, till 1950 i.e. till Lata came on the scene.
Her voice was very sweet and was suitable for sad songs.
She sang under C Ramchandra, Khemchand Prakash, Gyan Dutt, Hansraj Behl, Sardar Malik, Anil Biswas, S D Burman, H P Das, Premnath, Gulshan Sufi, Khursheed khan etc. etc.
After playback singing, she retired from film singing and taught music to aspirants throughout her unmarried life. She was staying in Bombay, with her brother.
The Hero of film Leela was Kanu Roy. The name KANU ROY is another instance of ” Same name confusion “. There was a composer also by the name Kanu Roy who gave music in a few films. Most people and many Internet sites, including IMDB,consider these two different persons as one and claim films for acting and music together, as if he was an actor and a composer. In Hindi films this happened routinely, but in the early era of Talkie films. Master Krishnarao, Vinayakrao Patwardhan, Master Mohammed, Badriprashad, Vithaldas Panchotiya etc can be quoted as actor/composers. Lately only the name of Kishore Kumar comes to the mind in this category.
Kanu Roy (the Actor) was in reality a name for Nalini Ranjan Roy, born on 9-12-1912 at Jabalpore. He was very fond of acting and so landed at Bombay Talkies, a company started by 2 Benagalese- Himanshu Roy and Devika Rani. Those days many people from Bengal used to come to Bombay Talkies, but only the capable ones like Amiya Chakravarty, Shashadhar Mukherjee or Ashok Kumar etc could make their careers here.
Kanu Roy started his acting career from the film Basant-1942. His name Nalini was sounding like a Girl’s name in Bombay ( there were already half a dozen Nalinis working in films those days), so it was changed and he opted for Kanu, his pet name in the house. Thus Kanu Roy came into films. Due to his good looks, he even became a lead actor in a few films. Nazrana-1946 (UR) was one such film where he was working opposite Kamini Kaushal. Kanu Roy also left Bombay Talkies along with S.Mukherjee and others and joined Filmistan. He was in many Filmistan films like, Munim ji, Nastik, Naagin, Jagriti etc. He acted in a Bangla film ‘Samar’too in 1950. Kanu Roy worked in about 40 odd films from 42 to 83 ( kisi se naa kehna).
It is a coincidence that Leela Mishra was also working in film Leela-1947. This is one actress ,who came from a village and remained a villager though out her life. Though she earned a lot with 300++ films, till the end she lived in a 2 room tenement only. She disliked and never saw films, even her own films.
Leela Mishra (1 January 1908 – 17 January 1988) was a Hindi film actress. She worked as a character actor in over 300 Hindi films for five decades, and is best remembered for playing stock characters such as aunts (Chachi or Mausi). She is best known for her role of “mausi” in the blockbuster Sholay (1975), Dil Se Mile Dil (1978), Baton Baton Mein (1979), Rajesh Khanna films such as Palkon Ki Chhaon Mein, Aanchal, Mehbooba, Amar Prem and Rajshri Productions hits such as Geet Gaata Chal (1975), Nadiya Ke Paar (1982) and Abodh (1984). Her career’s best performance was in Naani Maa in 1981, for which she received Best Actress award at the age of 73.
Leela Mishra was married to Ram Prasad Mishra, who was a character artist, then working in silent films. She got married at the very young age of 12. By the time she was 17, she had two daughters. She hailed from Jais, Raebareli. She and her husband were from zamindar (landowners) families.
Leela Mishra was discovered by a man called Mama Shinde, who was working for Dadasaheb Phalke’s Nasik Cinetone. He persuaded her husband to make her work in films. During those days there was a severe scarcity of women actors in films; this was evident in the paychecks that the Mishras received when they went to Nasik for the shooting. While Ram Prasad Mishra was hired on a salary of Rs. 150 per month, Leela Mishra was offered Rs. 500 per month. However, as they fared poorly in front of the camera, their contracts were cancelled.
The next opportunity that came their way was an offer to work in the movie Bhikarin, which was being produced by Kolhapur Cinetone, a company owned by the Maharaja of Kolhapur. However, Leela Mishra lost out on this opportunity too, as the role required her to put her arms round the actor (who was not her husband) while delivering a dialogue, which she point-blank refused to do.
Their next film was Gangavataran-1937, directed by Dadasaheb Phalke. This was his only and the last Talkie film. In this film Leela did the role of Parvati. This became her first film.
She had faced a similar problem while working earlier in another film titled Honhaar-1936. She was cast opposite Shahu Modak as a heroine, and was supposed to hug and embrace him, which she again refused steadfastly. Since the company was legally in a weak position, they couldn’t turn her out of the film, which proved to be a blessing in disguise for her. She was offered Modak’s mother’s role in the film and it clicked instantly. This opened the doors for her to play mother roles at the young age of 18.
Early on in her career she acted in notable films such as the musical hit Anmol Ghadi (1946), Raj Kapoor’s Awaara (1951) and Nargis-Balraj Sahni starrer Lajwanti (1958), which was nominated for the Palme d’Or for Best Film at 1959 Cannes Film Festival.
She acted in the first Bhojpuri film, Ganga Maiyya Tohe Piyari Chadhaibo (1962), which also starred Kumkum, Helen and Nasir Hussain.
Her roles varied from mothers, benign or evil aunts, to comic roles.
She acted in 344 films. Her last released film was Aatank-1996. 8 films were released after her death.
Today’s song is the 7th song (out of nine) from the film. It is a duet of Chitalkar and Binapani ( this is a name of Goddess Saraswati). It is aquite hummable song. Enjoy.

Lyrics
Aate jaate nazar milaate
mil jaate dildaar
do dil bolen
sang sang dolen
ho jaata hai pyaar
ho o ho o
tum ?? milne the
main duniya mein anjaani
tum ?? milne the
main duniya mein anjaani
?? nadi ki donon ??
phir kya aana-kaani
?? nadi ki donon ??
phir kya aana-kaani
hilmil jaayen
ghulmil jaayen
chalo chalen us paar
do dil bolen
sang sang dolen
ho jaata hai pyaar
jab phoolon ka chaand uthhe
dharti se dheere dheere
jab phoolon ka chaand uthhe
dharti se dheere dheere
hum bhi ghar se nikal chalenge
pyaar ki jamuna teere
hum bhi ghar se nikal chalenge
pyaar ki jamuna teere
nayi jawaani raat chaandni
milne ka tyohaar
do dil bolen
sang sang dolen
ho jaata hai pyaar
lambi raah door hai jaana
thhak jaana ruk jaana
lambi raah door hai jaana
thhak jaana ruk jaana
tum peepal ki thhandi chhaaya
ban ke jhhuk jhhuk aana
tum peepal ki thhandi chhaaya
ban ke jhhuk jhhuk aana
preet laga ke
meet bana ke
kaun kare inkaar
do dil bolen
sang sang dolen
ho jaata hai pyaar
Aate jaate nazar milaate
mil jaate dildaar
do dil bolen
sang sang dolen
ho jaata hai pyaar
