#The Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #

# Remembrance Day Lyricist Nida Fazli #
—————————————————————-

Today 8th February 2025 is the ninth ‘remembrance anniversary’ of the late poet-lyricist Nida Fazli. He was born on 12th October 1938 in Delhi and passed away on 8th February 2016 in Mumbai.

Nida Fazli is known for high quality, meaningful and sensible poetry and lyrics. Nida Fazli grew up in the city of Gwalior and he came to Bombay in 1964. Nida’s father was a poet in Urdu. After partition his father and other family members went to Pakistan, but Nida decided to stay back in India. During his studies Nida got interested in poetry and started writing poetry which further motivated him to become a poet. Nida wanted to be a great poet and thus he read a lot of Kabeer, Mir, Ghalib, Meera, Surdas and others. When he came to Bombay, he started writing poems for ‘Dharmyug’ and ‘Blitz’. His simple, original yet powerful poetry was well appreciated among poets and literary circles, and it got noticed by film makers too. He was a regular invitee at the ‘mushaairaas’ held at various places. As a film lyricist he got famous with the songs of ‘Aap To Aise Naa The’ and ‘Aahistaa-Aahistaa’ and later went on to write many timeless classics for Hindi films. Though he wrote less for Hindi films, whatever he wrote was well appreciated and he got known for ‘meaningful and sensible’ lyrics and words transcending life’s philosophy and struggle of humanity in this writings.

While his association with Jagjit Singh produced many gems both in Hindi films as well as in non-film music, his association with music composers like Usha Khanna and R.D. Burman also produced some memorable compositions. Today as a tribute to him on his ‘Remembrance Day’, I am presenting a lesser heard composition of Usha Khanna where the lyrics are written by Nida Fazli.Lyrics of this song are very nice verses that speaks of the some of the real life experiences and circumstances that a human being can experience. This song is from the movie “Kunwaari Bahu-1984”.

“Kunwaari Bahu-1984” was directed by P. Kumar Vasudev for ‘Marco Enterprises, Bombay’. It was produced by M.M.C. Cooper. This movie was passed by the Censor Board on 02.02.1984. The cast of this movie has Sarika, Vijayendra Ghatge, Navin Nischol, Tanuja, Asha Sachdev, Madan Puri, Deena Pathak, Uday Chandra, T.P. Jain, Sudhir Pande, P. Jairaj, Kamal Kapoor, Chandrashekhar, Parveen Pal, Narang, Navtej, Annapurna Shukla and others. This movie introduced Animesh, Anusha, and Master Makrand. Aruna Irani, Jagdeep and Rajni Sharma had special appearances in this movie. In its footnote for this movie page Geet Kosh mentions that this movie was adapted from a Telugu novel ‘Repati Koduku’ written by Malladhi Venkata Krishna Murthy.

“Kunwaari Bahu-1984” has six songs in it, which were all penned by lyricist Nida Fazli. Music for this movie was composed by Usha Khanna. The singers for this movie were Shabbir Kumar, Usha Khanna, Asha Bhonsle, Bhupinder Singh, Alka Yagnik and Shailendra Singh.

Today’s song is background song where we can see Sarika travelling in a bus and the song playing in the background. We can see Sarika recollecting the incidences in her life. The flashback shows Tanuja, Dina Pathak, Madan Puri, Navin Nischol, Vijayendra Ghatge, Master Makrand (if I am correct) etc. Bhupinder Singh is the singer of this song. Bhupinder Singh has also sung Nida Fazli’s lyrics in the famous song ‘kabhee kisee ko muqqammal jahaan naheen miltaa’.

Let us now listen to this song from “Kunwaari Bahu-1984”. The movie makes its debut in the blog with this song. (Lyrics are as per the audio link which has one stanza extra vis a vis the video of the song).
