‘Senapati’ (1961) was produced by Jai Gopal Mohla under the banner Mohla Films and was directed by Kedar Kapoor. The star cast included Prithviraj Kapoor, Nalini Jaywant, Amarnath, Veena, K N Singh, Tiwari, Helen, Durga Khote, Chaman Puri, Heera Sawant, Rajan Kapoor, Janakidas, Jeevan Kala, Madhumati etc. I heard the name of the producer, J G Mohla for the first time. Before this film, he had produced ’Insaan’ (1952) and ‘Ehsaan’ (1954). After ‘Senapati’ (1961), he seems to have vanished from Hindi films. But when I saw the name of Madan Mohla as the Associate Producer of this film, it gave me a hint of some connection with J G Mohla. Madan Mohla is a familiar name because of some of his box office hit films like ‘Sharafat’ (1972), ‘Raja Jani’ (1974), ‘Dus Numbri’ (1976) etc. The online search revealed that Madan Mohla was the son of Jai Gopal Mohla (J G Mohla). Incidentally, Madan Mohla was also the assistant director under director Kedar Kapoor for this film.
The VCD of the film has surfaced on a video sharing platform about 2 years back. Recently, I watched the film mainly for the picturisation of the classical raaga-based song, ‘madiraa chhalke mere nainon se’ which I was aware of in my younger days because it used to often get played on the radio. Unfortunately, this melodious song is edited out from the VCD. In the event, I got aware of its other obscure songs which are also good to listen. The film is a costume drama of a fictional royal family with the usual story of a senior minister’s sinister plot to usurp the kingdom. Besides, the weak story, the film is not effectively presented to generate interest from the audience. Apparently, the film has become obscure and so are its songs.
The story of the film is as under:
After the death of the King of Shilgarh at a young age, Queen Mother (Durga Khote) runs the kingdom on behalf of the young prince under the guidance of Senapati Vijay Singh (Prithviraj Kapoor) and the Maha Mantri, Makrand (Ramayan Tiwari). In order to devote his full time to the welfare of the Prince and his kingdom, Vijay Singh remains unmarried.
Maha Mantri wants to have a full control over the kingdom to become a de facto king. But he knows that it is not possible so long as Vijay Singh is the Senapati because of his honesty and unequivocable commitments towards the Prince and the kingdom. He suggests to Queen Mother that it is the convention that the Senapati of the kingdom should be a married person. Therefore, she should insist him to get married to a girl which Maha Mantri has selected. However, Senapati refuses to marry as he says that he is already married to his kingdom.
Once Senapati was on a hunting expedition in a forest where he meets a tribal girl (Veena). He falls in love with her and with the approval of her father, a tribal chief (Chaman Puri), he marries her. This is not liked by the Council of Ministers under Maha Mantri as the convention is that the Kingdom’s Senapati is required to take the prior approval of the Council of Ministers and the Queen Mother for the marriage. Senapati renounces his post and leaves the kingdom to live in the forest with his wife. Abhay Singh (K N Singh), a confidant of Maha Mantri is appointed as a new Senapati.
The absence of Vijay Singh gives an opportunity to Maha Mantri to achieve his objective. He forces the Queen Mother to sign the decree giving him the absolute power to run the kingdom. Otherwise, he will kill the Prince. Queen Mother signs the decree to save the Prince. Vijay Singh comes to know about the treacherous act of Maha Mantri. At once, he decides to visit Shilgarh leaving his pregnant wife in the care of the tribal chief. In the nick of time, he encounters a person sent by Makrand to kill the Prince. He takes the Prince out of the kingdom into a deep forest and starts living as an ascetic as Gurudev, leaving his wife to the care of her father. Meanwhile, his wife gives birth to a girl. The Queen Mother depressed by the recent events that happened in her life, leaves the kingdom getting refuge in the tribal village chief without disclosing her identity.
Years pass and the Prince (Amarnath) has now become adult. He has been well trained by Vijay Singh (now Gurudev) in using weapons and in warfare. The girl. Durga (Nalini Jaywant), born to Vijay Singh’s wife also grows up. Just as the hunting had become the meeting point of Vijay Singh and his wife, similar situation happens when Prince goes for hunting and from the other side, Durga also goes for hunting. Both Prince and Durga meets each other somewhat in a hostile situation without knowing their antecedents. The subsequent meetings with a couple of songs together bring them closer, still unaware of the background of each other.
Gurudev comes to know about the secret love affairs of the Prince and Durga which he resents. He advises Prince that his first priority is to take control of his kingdom. Hence he should avoid meeting Durga until the purpose is served. However, he refuses to listen. Gurudev meets Durga and comes to know that she is his daughter. He gives the background under which he took care of the Prince and requests her not to meet the Prince. She agrees. But the purpose behind the advice of her father makes her to become a warrior to fight Maha Mantri.
One day, Maha Mantri asks Senapati Abhay Singh to arrange for his coronation as the King of Shilgarh since Prince is ‘dead’ and the Queen Mother has left the kingdom. This is not liked by Senapati Abhay Singh. One day while on a mission to create unrest against Maha Mantri, he meets the Prince. After watching his bravery, they become friends without being aware of the fact the he is the Prince of the kingdom of Shilgarh.
With the announcement of Maha Mantri’s taking over the King of Shilgarh, Gurudev announces in the presence of a large crowd which includes the Queen Mother that the Prince of Shilgarh is alive, and he will soon take over Shilgarh. They should all ready for a fight if necessary. Maha Mantri gets the wind of it and orders the arrest of Senapati Abhay Singh for his treachery. A day before the coronation of Maha Mantri as the King of Shilgarh, Gurudev, now in the warrior costume as Vijay Singh with his wife, the Prince, the Queen Mother and Durga along with his troops march to the Palace and orders Maha Mantri to surrender. He declines and a fight between the troops of Maha Mantri and Gurudev ensue in which Maha Mantri is defeated. The Prince is coronated as the King of Shilgarh with Durga becoming his queen.
The film had seven songs written by Rajinder Krishan which were set to music by Madan Mohan. Two songs have been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 3rd song, ‘mat kholo ghoonghat pat saiyaan’ rendered by Asha Bhosle and picturised on Helen for Maha Mantri (Ramayan Tiwari). When he is watching the dance, he is not aware that behind his back, his trusted Senapati Abhay Singh (K N Singh) has decided to join the ex-Senapati Vijay Singh (Prithviraj Kapoor) who are loyal to Queen Mother (Durga Khote) and the Prince (Amarnath).
