Hullo Atuldom

“Paayal Ki Jhankaar” (1980) was a Rajshri Productions presentation, which was directed by Satyen Bose. It had a cast of Komal Mahuwakar (before this we had seen her in ‘Dream Girl’ as Baby Komal), Alankar (first role where he was not credited as Master Alankar), Surinder Kaur (I think this was her debut), Arun Kumar, Shail Chaturvedi, C.S. Dubey, Sudha Shivpuri, and a few more known & unknown faces who comprise the brigade of character artists in Hindi films.

The movie has around 12 songs of which the blog has one song that was contributed by Avinashji to wish the singer Jaspal Singh on his birthday which is on March 23rd.

Today we are having a song from this movie to wish the singer Alka Yagnik on her birthday. The song in the post was the first ever song Alka Yagnik recorded for a Hindi movie. She is one of the most prolific female playback singers and artists of recent times; and has sung a large number of female solos in her career spanning over four decades. She has sung songs in over 25 different languages. Twenty of her tracks feature in BBC’s list of top forty Bollywood soundtracks of all-time.

Alka Yagnik has won several accolades including two National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her songs: “Ghoongat Ki Aad Se” from ‘Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke’ (1993) and “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai” from ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998). She has won a record seven Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her songs: “Ek Do Teen” from ‘Tezaab’ (1988), “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” from ‘Khalnayak’ (1993), “Zara Tasveer Se Tu” from ‘Pardes’ (1998), “Taal Se Taal” from ‘Taal’ (2000), “Dil Ne Yeh Kaha Hai Dil Se” from ‘Dhadkan’ (2001), “O Re Chhori” from Lagaan (2002) and “Hum Tum” from ‘Hum Tum’ (2005) from a record thirty-six nominations.
Though today’s song was her debut song in Hindi films, she hit bull’s eye/ caught public attention with the still-popular “Mere Angne mein” from ‘Lawaris’ (1981).

“Paayal Ki Jhankaar” had music by Rajkamal and its songs were written by Maya Govind. Aarti Mukherjee, Alka Yagnik, Anand Kumar C., Jaspal Singh, Purushottam Das Jalota, Sulakshana Pandit and Yesudas gave their voices to the songs of this movie.

Various sites on the internet give the story of the film as thus:

Shyama (Komal) is an orphaned young woman who lives with her aunt (Sudha Shivpuri), uncle (C.S. Dubey) and several cousins, two of who are girls of marriageable age. Her passion is dancing, which is frowned upon by her uncle and aunt. One day she, along with a young man named Gopal (Alankar Joshi), go to see the dance by an international artiste named Veena (I think this was Surinder Kaur). They ask Veena and her mentor, Dinanath (Shail Chaturvedi), for help but are shunned and asked to leave. Crestfallen, she returns home and sleeps outside the door as it was very late. The next day her aunt finds out about her overnight excursion and beats her up severely, followed by another beating by her uncle. Humiliated, she decides to run away with Gopal to another town in order to learn dancing at the hands of well-known Guru Kishinchand Sharma (Arun Kumar). They do find Guru Kishin, who initially rejects them, but relents when he witnesses Shyama’s abilities. He decides to be her mentor and in this manner Shyama excels in her talents, so much so that she is asked to perform on stage in a competition with none other than Veena.

Lyrics

thirkat ang lachak jhukee jhoomat
taal taal de taalee
thirkat ang lachak jhuki jhoomat
taal taal de taalee
mohan roop vibhor baawree

theraro
aaj tumhara man kahaan hai shyama
naach par dhyaan do
phir se karo

mohan roop vibhor baawaree
mohan roop vibhor baawaaree
ankhiyaan tare na taaree

ruk jaao
hua naheen abhee

kya galtee hui baaba
jin bolon par tum naach rahee ho
unka matlab samajh rahee ho
phir vo bhaav tumhaaree aankhon mein kyon naheen aataa
raas leela mein naachte samay
raadha thirak thirak kar naach rahi hai
taalee par taal par
lay par
jhuk kar
thumak kar
jhoom kar
har tarah se naach rahee hai
lekin uskee aankhen hain
ki shyam ke roop kee baavree banee hui hain
doobee hui hain pyaar se
udhar hee lagee hui hain
hat naheen rahin hain
phir se karo

thirkat ang lachak jhukee jhoomat
taal taal de taalee
off o
ye udaasee kahaan se aaj jaatee hai tumhaaree aankhon mein
pyaar chaahiye pyaar
khushee
Gopal saamne khada hai
Raadha usey kaise dekhegi
vo bhaav laao tumhaaree aankhon mein
aur agar naheen la sakteen
to apne ghunghru utar ke
rakh do unke charnon mein

thirkat ang lachak jhukee jhoomak
taal taal de taaree
mohan roop vibhor baawree
mohan roop vibhor baawree
ankhiyaan tare na taaree
