The main languages spoken in Bihar is Bhojpuri, Maithili and Magahi (Magadhi). Bhojpuri is spoken mainly in Western Bihar, spilling over to Eastern Uttar Pradesh, Western Jharkhand. In addition, Bhojpuri is also spoken in some parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and the Tarai region of Nepal. Maithili is spoken mainly in North Bihar, North-Eastern Jharkhand and the Eastern Tarai region of Nepal. Magahi is spoken mainly in Southern Bihar and some part of North Jharkhand. The question arises as to why the film producers prefer making films predominantly in Bhojpuri. According to 2011 Census, among the three main languages, Bhojpuri is spoken by the largest number of people (5.06 crore) followed by Maithili (1.34 crore) and Magahi (1.27 crore). There are a large number of Bhojpuri speaking people who have migrated all over India. This should explain as to why among the three languages, the highest number of films have been made in Bhojpuri language.

Surprisingly, the first talkie film among the three main Bihari languages was made in Magahi and the film was ‘Bhaiyya’ (1961). The film was produced by P H Prasad under the banner of Nalanda Chitra Pratishthan and was directed by Phani Majumdar. The cast included Tarun Bose, Vijaya Chowdhry, Gopal, Padma Khanna, Achala Sachdev, Lata Sinha, Shubha Khote, Ramayan Tiwari, Bhagwan Sinha, Braj Kishore etc.

Phani Majumdar had directed some classic Hindi films like ‘Street Singer’ (1938), ‘Kapal Kundala’ (1939), ‘Baadbaan’ (1954), ‘Aarti’ (1962) and ‘Oonche Log’ (1965). During 1955-59, Phani Majumdar shifted his base to Singapore and joined Shaws’ Malay Films Productions. During this period, he directed 11 films in Malay, Chinese and English languages. On his return to India, he landed in Kolkata during which time he planned to make ‘Bhaiyyaa’ (1961) in Maghai language. After shooting the film in around Gaya, he returned to Mumbai to continue his journey in Hindi films as writer-director until about early 1980s.

Phani Majumdar was married to actress Monica Desai, sister of Leela Desai after she was involved in a nasty car accident. It was out of a sense of caring responsibility, he chose to marry Monica Desai. The accident robbed her of her beauty and her filmy career. Apart from its director, Phani Majumdar, some high-profile personalities of Hindi film industry were associated with this Magahi film. They included its screenplay writer, Nabendu Ghosh and editor, R M Tipnis who was known for editing the box office successful films such as ‘Mahal’ (1949), ‘Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’ (1958), ‘Ustaadon Ke Ustaad’ (1963), ‘Jugnu’ (1973) etc. Hindi film’s top playback singers, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey lent their voices for the songs composed by Chitragupt.

The film was completed sometime in 1961. It is said that film did not get theatres for its release. Hence it got released probably in a couple of theatres in Bihar. Due to poor response, the film was withdrawn in a week’s time. The film was re-released sometime in 1964 in a few theatres, probably in the background of box office successes of the first three Bhojpuri films released in 1962-63.

The story of the film written by Phani Mujumdar is as under:

Paramanand (Tarun Bose) stays with his widowed stepmother, Maya (Achala Sachdev) and a younger stepsister, Kamla (Lata Sinha) in a village. Despite being financially hard-pressed, Paramanand has been able to send his younger stepbrother Murli (Gopal) to Mumbai for college studies. Paramanand is in love with her neighbour, Bindu (Vijaya Chowdhary) and he intents to marry her after the completion of Murli’s college education.

Murli returns to the village after obtaining B.A. degree. Paramanand is very happy that at least one of their family members is a graduate. Having stayed independently in Mumbai, Paramanand makes stay arrangements for Murli in a separate furnished room. While strolling in the village, Murli meets Gulati (Ramayan Tiwari) who gives him a piece of inciting advice to Murli that he is after all the stepbrother of Paramanand who is going to grab the property of his father.

One day while walking in the village, Murli comes across Bindu who has come to collect flowers along with Kamla. He develops attraction toward her. Subsequently, being new in the village, Bindu accompanies Murli to take him to a temple followed a visit to Sonpur Mela. Murli falls in love with Bindu. On the other hand, Maya now pressurises Paramanand to marry Bindu as per his assurance that once Murli’s education is completed he will consider marriage. But with the new developments where he finds Murli in love with Bindu, Paramanand decides to sacrifice his love for Bindu in favour of Murli despite his stepmother’s displeasure to the proposal. Murli gets married to Bindu.

Within few days of Murli’s marriage, Paramanand gets to know Murli’s extra-marital affairs with Chandra (Padma Khanna). In fact, Murli has been in touch with her even before his marriage with Bindu. When Murli starts spending more time with Chandra, Paramanand tries his best to counsel Murli to stop his liaison with Chandra. But Murli loses his cool which lead to heated arguments between the two. Paramanand beats up Murli. Angry with Paramanand’s treatment, Murli leaves the house with Bindu to stay independently.

Bindu gets pregnant and this news makes Chandra angry. To add fuel to fire, Gulati incites Murli to contest his late father’s deed of will as forgery. As for the lawyer’s fees, Gulati suggests Murli that he can get money from Seth Dayaram being the brother of Paramanand. Murli files a case in the court and Paramanand receives the Court’s summons. Uncomfortable with Chandra’s behaviour towards her, Bindu now in advance stage of pregnancy, leaves Murli’s house and returns to Paramanand’s house. She delivers a baby girl.

In the court, the case of forgery will against Paramanand is dismissed. Seth Dayaram threatens to file a case of forgery against Murli for taking money against the forged signature of Paramanand. With loss of court case and a fresh case of forgery against him, Murli and Chandra secretly leave the village. However, Paramanand intercepts them and bring Murli to his house.

Murli heaves a sigh of relief when Seth Dayaram reveals that Paramanand has repaid the money he had taken forging his signature and the court case has been withdrawn. Paramanand on the other hand, leaves his house without informing anyone with a fresh deed of will bequeathing his father’s entire property to Murli. However, Murli runs after him and convinces him to return home so that he follows the right path under the guidance of his elder brother. Brothers unite and stay under one roof.

The film had seven songs written by Smt Vindhyvasini Devi and Prem Dhawan as mentioned in the credit titles of the film. As per saregama.com, Smt Vindhyvasini Devi has written two folk songs. Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and Prem Dhawan have written one song each. The name of lyricist for the remaining three songs have not been mentioned.

Smt Vindyavasini Devi (05.01.1920 – 18/04/2006) is a renown folk singer, song writer and musician in Bhojpuri, Maithili and Magahi languages. She worked with AIR, Patna from 1955 to 1980 first as an artist and then as a producer. She was the founder of Vindhya Kala Kendra, Patna which is affiliated to Bhatkhande Music Institute, Lucknow.

I present the first song, ‘kauna phool banwaase ailey pawanwaa’ rendered Lata Mangeshkar. The name of lyricist is unknown. The song is picturised on Vijaya Chowdhary. Kamla (Lata Sinha) is also seen closely following her. The background of the song is that Bindu’s (Vijaya Chowdhary) marriage has been settled with Murli (Gopal) and she is expressing her joy of her impending marriage by singing a joie de vivre song.
