‘Khufiya Mahal’ (1964) was produced and directed by Akkoo under the banner of Amar Films. The cast included Jairaj, Chitra, Mohan Sheri, Shaikh, Tuntun, Paul Sharma, Jilani, King Kong, Goldstein etc. Azad, Sundar and Indira Bansal made guest appearances in the film. The credit title also includes other ‘wonders’ such as ‘Flying Horse’, Gorilla’, Apeman, ‘Jin’ and a flying ‘palace’. Surely, the film belonged to ‘fantasy’ genre.

The film’s producer-director, Akkoo (real name: Akbar Ali) had directed 21 films during 1952-1965 which included ‘Sitamgar’ (1954), ‘Noon-E- Yaman’ (1956), ‘Al Hilal’ (1958), ‘Beraham Daku’ (1959), ‘Black Tiger’ (1960), ‘Madam Zorro’ (1962), ‘Chhupa Rustam’ (1965) etc. Almost all of his films belonged to the genre of stunt/action/costume. ‘Khufiya Mahal’ (1964) was the only film he also produced it after which he migrated to Pakistan. He directed three films in Pakistan during 1966-71. He passed away on June 6, 1971.

The story of the film is as under:

The film begins with Tazmaan (Paul Sharma) a sorcerer (a magician with evil powers) giving the boon to his disciple, Salman (Mohan Sheri) which enables Salman to gain unlimited magical power. However, Tazmaan cautions him that he is not invincible as he still holds the secret of his death. Worried as well as angered by this revelation, Salman uses the boon to shrink Tazmaan and confines him in a cage. He takes the cage to his under-sea palace so that no one will have access to get the secret of his death.

Adil (Jairaj) and his sidekick (Shaikh) have seen from the distance as to how Salman had shrunk Tazmaan and put him in the cage through his magic and taken him under the sea. The whole scene surprises Adil. He wants to investigate Salman’s under-sea palace. But his sidekick discourages Adil by saying that their first priority is to return home. At that time, they hear the commotion of a group of girls who have been surrounded by some ruffians. Adil and his sidekick fight with the ruffians and rescue the girls one of which is Princess Tajwar of Bahrain (Chitra). Later, Adil is invited by Princess Tajwar in her palace where she introduces to her father, king of Bahrain. Both Adil and Tajwar fall in love.

After reaching his under-sea palace, Salman resurrects a beauty, Amra (Mohna) from a lifeless statue and promises to make her his queen. Tazmaan points out that there is a woman more beautiful that Amra, and she is Princess Tajwar. But he cannot dream to marrying her. Salman accepts the challenge and proceeds to Bahrain with a gift of a talking bird which can correctly answer any question asked. From the talking bird, Salman comes to know that Princess Tajwar is in love with Adil. He abducts her through his magic and takes her to his under-sea palace. She is kept under house arrest. Tazmaan warns Salman that by abducting Princess Tajwar, he has invited his own destruction.

When Adil comes to know about the abduction of Princess Tajwar, he proceeds in the search of the secret under-sea palace but he has to return as he faces a monster fish which injures him. Next, the king of Bahrain send a group of experts divers to the secret under-sea palace to get back his daughter, Princess Tajwar. But Salman through his magical power sends them directly to the prison. As a last resort, Adil himself volunteers to reach the under-sea palace to confront Salman. He successfully enters the under-sea palace but he is also get immobilised by Salman’s magical power and is sent to prison.

Adil’s sidekick who has always avoided going under sea out of fear has no alternative but to venture into the sea to save his friend Adil. Luckily, he gets a boon from a genie by way of a magical pole and an under-sea flying carpet which takes him to the secret palace. The magical pole works wonder and overpowers Salman during which Adil is released. Tazmaan advises Adil and his sidekick to take his cage out of the palace and release him so that he can help them to get back Princess Tajwar. They do as instructed by Tazmaan.

Meanwhile, Salman comes to know about the release of Tazmaan which is a bad news for him as he knows the secret of end to his life. He immediately rushes to follow Tazmaan with Princess Tajwar in his flying palace. He tries to create obstacles to Tazmaan by way of creating fire around him and putting Adil and his side kick under the cover of a net, But they overcome the obstacles. Finally, Tazmaan takes Adil and his sidekick to a cave where the secret of ending Salman’s life is embedded in two large burning lamps. Soon a fight between Salman and Adil take place in the cave in which Salman gets incapacitated. During that time, Adil goes to a high platform where two giant earthen lamps are oozing fire. Adil put-off the fire and Salman dies. Adil and Princess Tajwar unite and come back to Bahrain to get married.

The core story of the fantasy films are mostly equal to the length of a synopsis of the regular films. The film gets lengthened mainly due to many fight sequences – each fight sequence taking abut 3-5 minutes of film’s length to keep the front benchers happy. The crude comical scenes between Shaikh and Tuntun which are more like a sub-plot take about 10-15 minutes. Then there is an item number of wrestling bout between King Kong and Goldstein which has no relevance to the story. The inconsequential songs take another 25-30 minutes. Also, in this film, there are many trick scenes most of which look crude.

The film had seven songs written by Shyam Hindi (4) and Zafar Rahi (3) which were set to music by Chand Pardesi. Three songs have been covered on the Blog. I present the 4th song, ‘do lafzon kee hai mere sanam meree kahaanee’ which is written by Shyam Hindi and rendered by Suman Kalyanpur. The song is picturised on a dancer whom I am unable to recognise. Mohan Sheri is present during her dance.

It is interesting to note that the opening mukhda line of the song is inspired from Majrooh Sultanpuri’s song, darr naa muhabbat kar le in ‘Andaaz’ (1949). In the first antara of the song, he has written the verse, ‘do lafzon ki ek kahaani ek muhabbat ek jaawaani’. A similar mukhda has been used in the song, do lafzon ki hai dil ki kahaani from ‘The Great Gambler’ (1979). Perhaps, Majrooh Sultanpuri himself may have got the idea from Jigar Muradabadi’s old ghazal, ‘ek lafz-e-muhabbat kaa itna adna saa fasaana hai’ which was used in the film, ‘Be-Raham’ (1980).

As I said earlier, most of the songs in the film have no relevance to the context. They appear like item numbers. The song under discussion is also one of such songs when Salman (Mohan Sheri) after getting the boon from Tazmaan (Paul Sharma) uses the same boon to make him shrunk and confines him in a cage. He returns with the cage to his under-sea palace. Salman then resurrects Amra from one of the statues and she starts dancing to entertain him.
