Yeh Raat Bhi Ja Rahi Hai” is superbly sung by Lata Mangeshkar in a haunting manner. The song is written by Anand Bakshi and set to tune by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
“Sau Saal Baad’ of 1966 was an unsuccessful ghostly mystery film, produced by B K Dubey. The star cast included Feroz Khan, Kumkum, Manmohan Krishna, Rajendra Nath, D K Sapru etc. Lyrics were by Anand Bakshi and the superb music by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
The movie “Sau Saal Baad” (1966) tells the story of a young engineer who encounters a mysterious mansion and a haunting female voice, leading him to uncover a past life connection and a vengeful spirit. The film explores themes of reincarnation, revenge, and the enduring power of love and loss across lifetimes.
The story in detail:
A young engineer, while working at an excavation site, discovers an old, abandoned mansion. He hears a melancholic song sung by a woman and is drawn to investigate.
Inside the mansion, he encounters a beautiful apparition, a woman who seems familiar to him.
The engineer realizes that the woman’s presence is linked to his past life, suggesting a connection between the two.
The film hints at a story of revenge, with the woman’s spirit seeking retribution for past wrongs. The engineer becomes entangled in this vengeful plot.
The film culminates in a resolution where the past is reconciled, and the cycle of revenge is broken, often involving the reunion of the past life lovers.
The movie is considered a supernatural thriller with elements of romance and drama, drawing inspiration from folklore and the concept of reincarnation.
“Yeh Raat Bhi Ja Rahi Hai” is a captivating and melancholic song sung by the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. As always, her rendition is simply exquisite and flawless. Her voice conveys a profound sense of yearning, sorrow, and a touch of haunting beauty. She masterfully navigates the emotional nuances of the lyrics, making every word resonate with feeling.
The music, composed by the iconic duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal, perfectly complements the somber mood of the song. It’s a classic example of their early work, showcasing their talent for creating melodies that are both simple and deeply impactful. The arrangement is subtle, allowing Lata’s voice to shine, while the instrumentation adds to the melancholic atmosphere.
Anand Bakshi’s lyrics are poignant and evocative. They speak of a night passing, bringing with it a sense of impending separation, unfulfilled longing, and a touch of despair.
The song creates a very specific atmosphere – one of quiet sadness, solitude, and introspection. It’s often described as “haunting” due to its melancholic melody and the way Lata’s voice carries the weight of the emotions. It’s the kind of song that can transport you to a reflective state, even without knowing the film’s context.
While Sau Saal Baad itself wasn’t a critically acclaimed film (reports suggest it was quite confusing with “awful comedy”), “Yeh Raat Bhi Ja Rahi Hai” stands out as a musical gem. Given the film’s theme, which reportedly involves a mysterious apparition and elements of past life, the song’s haunting quality would have likely enhanced the mood of certain scenes.
