Blog Day :

6200 Post No. : 19145

Today (9 July 2025) is the birth centenary of Guru Dutt (9 July 1925-10 october 1964). What a coincidence that today is 6200th day of the blog as well.

Guru Dutt had already carved a niche for himself in Hindi film industry by the time he was gone. He was just 39 years old when he expired. He had a very troubled personal life which took its toll on him (as well as on his wife Geeta Dutt). Both of them legends, but both of them were taken away when so young. Guru Dutt left for the heavenly abode at the age of 39, Geeta Dutt was 41 when she departed. Both of them already have two decades of stellar accomplishments behind them and both had become legends by the time they departed.

It is worth noting that almost all movies where Guru Dutt figured have already been YIPPEED in the blog. Only exception being “Lakharani” (1945) which was his debut film, and “Sailaab”(1956). His other films, viz. “Hum Ek Hain”(1946), Girls’s school”(1949), “Sangram” (1950),”Baazi”(1951), “Jaal”(1952), “Baaz”(1953), “Aar Paar”(1954), Mr and Mrs 55 (1955), “CID”(1956),’Pyaasa”(1957), Kaaghaz Ke Phool”(1959), “Chaudhvin Ka Chaand”(1960),”Saahib Bibi aur Ghulam”(1962) ,”Bahurani”(1963) and “Saanjh aur Sawera”(1964) have already been YIPPEED in the blog.

When he died in 1964, some of the films where he was associated with were left incomplete, viz “Picnic”, “Love and God”, Bahaaaren Phir Bhi aayengi”. Picnic was shelved, whereas “Love and God” and ‘Bahaaren Phir Bhi Aaywengi” were made by replacing Guru Dutt with Sanjeev Kumar and Dharmendra respectively.

Seeing that most films associated with Guru Dutt are already YIPPEED, we are scratching at the bottom of the barrel as far as finding songs involving Guru Dutt are concerned.

As mentioned above, “Laakharani”(1945) was the debut film of Guru Dutt. This movie was directed by Vishram Bedekar for Prabhat Films, Poona. This movie had an off beat story which was ahaed of its time and the movie goers could not identify with it, so the movie flopped at the box office. As a result, prints of the movie did not survive. Even the records of songs ended up becoming obscure. There were six songs in the movie according to HFGK and none were availaable online. One song from the movie is covered in the blog. That post by our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh was possible because Sudhir Jee, our inhouse source of rare songs uploaded a song from this movie specially for that post.

The story of the movie, as given in that post, is reproduced below:-

Bichwa (Durga Khote) is the queen of a devout untouchable community, which is not permitted to enter any temple. Her daughter Lakharani marries the prince from a community of atheists and hence is excommunicated by her own tribe. The devout group has their devotion tested by economic setbacks and a major conflict erupts between them and the atheists’ community. But God materialises on earth, thus solving the problems of belief and its attendant conflicts. Untouchability is abolished and they all can enter temples and worship also.

Guru Dutt was the assistant director of this movie. He also played the role of Lachman, brother of Lakharani.

When I checked up, I find that another obscure song of “Lakharani”(1945) has become available online. On the occasion of Guru Dutt’s birth vcentenary, here is this obscure song from the debut movie of “Guru Dutt”(1945). The song is sung by an unidentified female voice as well as female chorus. This song ,m which appears like the theme song of the movie, is penned by Qamar Jalalabadi. Music is composed by Master Krishnarao Phulambrikar.

Only audio of the song is available. I request our knowldgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song as well as on the identification of this female voice.

Compared with all the celebrated actors of his time, Guru Dutt did very few films. Most of the films he did as actor, producer and director were successful starting with Baazi , Jaal , CID , Aar Paar, Mr and Mrs 55, Pyaasa and later Chaudivin ka Chand. However, his ambitious project Kaagaz ke Phool did not succeed and even Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam was just an average success. His movies as actor for outside producers became average like Bharosa, Bahurani, Sanjh aur Savera ( directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee ) and 12 O clock ( a good film directed by Pramod Chakravorty). There were no blockbusters like Raj Kapoor or Dilip Kumar films .
