If one looks at professions, we find that different professions have enjoyed popularity during different times. As new inventions were made, new professions came about. The profession of film actors, technicians etc were created when film making started. Singers have been there in the past as well but they typically used to be patronised in royal court. with the invention of gramophone recording, singers’ songs could be recorded and played even at remote locations where the singer would never go. That way this invention revolutionised the spread of music. As Radio was invented, these records could be played on radio stations and the same songs could reach a vast audience who did not need to possess these records themselves. So Radio, along with records, enabled dissemination of music, as well as news etc at a level that was revolutionary in human history.

No wonder people who were associated with these new technologies were looked up to. We have a Hindi movie called “Gramophone Singer”(1938). It shows that a singer recording his songs on gramophone was a celebrity during those days. Other such celebrity professions of those days were “School Master”, “Station Master”, “Doctor”, “Lady Doctor”, “Nurse” etc. All these professions have Hindi movies made on them with the same titles. In the coming decades, we had other equally popular professionals such as “CID”, “Inspector”, “Taxi driver”, “Trolly Driver”, “Commercial Pilot Officer” etc. 🙂

“Gramophone Singer”(1938) was produced by V C Desai and Ramchandra Thakur for Sagar Films Production. The movie had Surendra, Bibbo, Ishrat Sultana, Prabha, Bhudo Advani, Sankata, Pande, Jamoo Patel, Pesi Patel, Kayam Ali, Sawant, Kanhaiyalal, Agashe etc in it. This movie had 15 songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the past.

Here is the fifth song from “Gramophone Singer”(1938) to appear in the blog. This song, barely 1 minutes and 20 seconds long is sung in one breath, without any pause, by Surendra. Zia Sarhadi is the lyricist of this simple straight forward lyrics. Music is composed by Anil Biswas.

Only audio of the song is avilable but it is clear that the song was picturised on Surendra himself.
