(Celebrating ‘Saawan’-2025-2)

#Desh Kee Mittee Kee Khushboo#

The month of saawan is at its peak. Activities like visiting temples, offering prayers, having get-togethers and visiting nearby tourist places reach their peak in this season. This Sunday there a was trip arranged by the family club of the colony at my new workplace. However, I could not participate in that due to other priorities. People from my department who were part of this trip told me that the place they visited had a big farm with a ‘lake/pond’ around and a temple of goddess. The snacks and lunch were arranged from the canteen at our work place only and people enjoyed ‘antaaksharee’, housie, playing games and relaxing in the midst of lush green fields around. We in India celebrate nature, and we celebrate seasons. We pay our respect to nature through many customs and rituals. Different religious and spiritual activities are practiced during this period. People all over the country follow these customs, rituals, and traditions with some local variations.

If you happen to be in Rajasthan, or particularly in Bikaner during this season you can enjoy the local flavour of saawan there. There is a famous folk saying in Rajasthan which is ‘siyaalo Jaipur bhalee, unaalo Ajmer, Maarwaad nit ro bhalo, saawan Bikaner’ with some change there is a similar saying which goes like this ‘siyaalo khaatu bhalee, unaalo Ajmer, Nagaur nit ro bhalo, saawan Bikaner’. This translates to ‘winter in Jaipur is good, and summer is good in Ajmer, Maarwaad/Nagaur is good for everyday life and for the month of ‘saawan’ Bikaner is good. People in Bikaner celebrate ‘saawan’ in their unique style. The arrival of ‘saawan’ is celebrated whole heartedly in Bikaner. People cook at homes and carry the food to distant places such as temples, at parks, forests, near a lake or farms nearby ponds or rivers where the food is consumed.

Why I am talking of this, is because the song under discussion is a song that captures to mood of celebration that the month of saawan brings. The song brings out the inner feelings of womenfolk who want to enjoy “saawan” surreptitiously behind the back of their husbands and inlaws.

This song is from the 1956 movie ‘Aastik’. This movie was directed by S.P. Kalla for ‘Rani Productions, Bombay’. It was produced by Gordhan Das Kakkad. The cast of this movie has Shahu Modak, Paro, Meenakshi, B.M. Vyas, Nagpal, Anand Joshi, Praveen Pal, Lotan, Ramesh, Micky, Dinanath, M.S. Phatak, Nazi, Shanti, Mithaailal, Master Dabboo, Master Babu and others. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 15.05.1956.

Four songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog. Today I am presenting the fifth song from this movie. Singer for the today’s song is Shamshad Begam. Lyrics are by S.P. Kalla (who directed this movie). Music is composed by Narayan.

Let us now enjoy the song where the video of this song is also available. One can note that this video has been uploaded just a month back on internet. I am unable to identify the actors lip-syncing the song and present in the picturisation of this song. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this song and this movie please.

Let us now enjoy this wonderful song.
