(Celebrating ‘Saawan’-2025-3)
——————————-
Today’s saawan song is from ‘Zamaanaa-1938’ a movie that was released nearly eightyseven yearago. It was directed by Ram Daryani for Krishin Movietone, Bombay. It had Padma Devi, Nazeer, Gope, Dar (Jeevan), and Majeed, Basant, Ameena, Gulab, Hansa Wadkar, Bansi Karnataki and others.
This movie has eleven songs written by Dina Nath Madhok and composed by Sunderdas Bhatia.
Here is what our in-house encylopeadia Shree Arunkumar jee had mentioned in his comments on an erlier song from this moviecovered on the blog.
ZAMAANAA (1938), a Krishin Movietone film, directed by Ram Daryani, had music by Sunderdas (Dekha Jayega, Master Man, Saaqi, Idd Ka Chand, Rajkumari, Shokh Dilruba etc) and the lyrics were by D N Madhok. The cast was Jeevan (known that time only as O.K. Dhar or Dhar Kashmiri) and Padma Devi in the lead, supported by Nazir, Gope, Gulab, Majeed, Bansi, Karnataki, Amina, Vasant, Hansa Wadkar (Marathi Heroine-on whose life, a full length feature film ‘Sangatey Aikaa’ was produced in the 70s, Jayashri Gadkar doing her role) etc. Like one song, ‘aye dard zaraa dum le’ was used in ‘Ghar Ki Izzat’ (1948) later. Similarly, this film-Zamana had used one song ‘sotey mein hamse mila hai’, sung by Pratima Devi, originally from the film Dukhiyari (1937).
Two songs from this movie have been posted on the blog in the past. Today I am presenting the third song from this movie. This song is a ‘saawan’ song –cum- a teasing song among boys and girls? Only audio of this song is available.
Let us now listen to this eighty-seven year old saawan song written by D.N. Madhok and composed by Sunderdas Bhatia. Gope and Padma Devi are the singers alongwith chorus.
Song-Saawan kee rut bhaaaye sajaniya (Zamaana)(1938) Singers-Gope, Padma Devi, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Sunderdas Bhatia
Female chorus
Lyrics
saawan kee rut bhaaye sajaniyaa
saawan kee rut bhaaye hai ae
saawan kee rut bhaaye sajaniyaa
saawan kee rut bhaaye hai ae
aam kee daalee koyal kooke
aam kee daalee koyal kooke
baaghon mein bulbul gaaye hai ae
meree galee mein ek pardesee
prem kaa naad bajaaye hai
kajraare nainon se apney
chanchal man nirmaaye(?) hai ae
main lajjaa mein doob rahee
aur neeche khada muskaaye hai
haan main lajjaa mein doob rahee
aur neeche khadaa muskaaye hain aen
nain tikaaye dekhe jaaye ae
nain tikaaye dekhe jaaye ae
zaraa laaj naheen aaye hai
meree galee mein ek pardesee
prem kaa naad bajaaye hai
kaun des kaa majnoon haaye
kaun des kaa majnoon haaye
kis lailaa ke peechhe hai
kaun des kaa majnoon haaye
kis lailaa ke peechhe hai
ghadee ghadee morey angnaa mein
ghadee ghadee morey angnaa mein
aaye hai
aur jaaye hai
meree galee mein ek pardesee
prem kaa naad bajaaye hai ae
meree galee mein ek pardesee
prem kaa naad bajaaye hai ae
