Today’s song is from an absolutely unknown film, Laaj-1946.

The film was directed by 3 people – Shehzada Ayyaz, Syed Munawwar and H.Qasim, under the banner of Ayyaz productions, Bombay- probably owned by one of the directors. The music was given by Ramchandra Pal and the cast was Shamim, Radha Rani,Ramesh, H.Prakash, Rajan, Rehana, Master Nissar and others.

I had never heard of this film, let alone seeing it. This was because neither the film nor any of its songs were famous. Even the cast did not boast of any of the famous or popular stars of that time. Only one of the cast members attracted the attention and that was the old time hero Master Nissar.

I tried hard to know more about this film but was not able to get anything. Then I wrote to Shri Harmandir Singh Hamraz ji and he, very kindly, promptly sent me the photograph of the film’s booklet. Thanks to Hamraz ji for this.

By 1946 to 1950 old towers shook hard to crumble. The studio system almost disappeared. Film industry could now boast of people highly educated, talented and hard working. Even artists with International experience and success like Dewan Sharar, Shakuntala Paranjpye, actor Ranjan, Balraj Sahni etc contributed to Indian films. The old horse of Calcutta-New Theatres broke down and actors, directors and Music specialists from Bengal made a Bee-Line to Bombay, thus making it the strongest ever film centre.

1946 was also an year of consolidation, in a sense that due to the iminent Partition of India on the basis of Religion, agreed upon by Gandhi-Nehru combine, made Muslim artistes and filmmakers plan to pack their bags and move over to the new Utopia across the border. Their vacancies were to be filled up by the waiting second line of actors, directors and MDs. The film industry was to have a complete new look within 1-2 years and the beginning was from 1946. Thus the year was very important.

The year 1946 was an year which saw many changes in the film industry. The II world war had just ended. Rationing and control on many items had created Black marketing. This made many people Millionaires. The extra income started getting invested in Film making. The increased cost of Raw Films made filmmaking 7 to 8 times costlier. A film which was made in about 1 Lakh rupees in 1940, needed 8 Lakhs now. Studio system was waning and artiste rates increased in Lakhs instead of thousands.

In 1945, only 74 films were made. This number increased to 153 films in 1946. Further, in 1947, the film industry produced a record number of films – 181, but of course that was due to Partition. The quality of films was sacrificed at the cost of the quantity of films made in 1946. However, some quality films were made in 1946, indicating the changing face of filmmaking.

Film Dharati ke Lal-46 was made by IPTA people and it became the first film to be exhibited in Russia. Neecha Nagar-46 won the Grand Prix award in the French Film Festival. Film Dr. Kotnis ki amar kahani-46 was dubbed in English as ‘ The journey of Dr. Kotnis’. It was shown in the USA and then in the Venice Film Festival. Two musical films- Anmol Ghadi and Shahjahan were made in 1946.

Year 1946 also saw the Debut of several stars and artists. In fact one can call 1946 as the “Debut year” of the Hindi film industry. See this….

After partition, she migrated to Pakistan with the family. There, she acted in 8 films- 6 Urdu and 2 Punjabi. Her first film Shahida-49 was a hit film and celebrated Silver jubilee. Even Do Ansoo-50 and Ghulam-53 were hit films. Shamim married Producer/Director Anwar Kemal Pasha. Shamim died on 23-10-1984 in Lahore. Shamim was niece of actress singer Khursheed Begum. Shamim’s younger sister Naseem was also an actress in India, but she died quite young, on 17-11-1946 at Bombay, in India only. This was reported in Film India magazine also.

The story of the film, as per the booklet is…..

Service to Humanity without much ado was the chief ambition and aim in the life of Dr. Raj. He even risked displeasure and criticism from his friends like Prof. Rajendranath, a celebrated artist, who invited him to witness a stage play in which he was to play the Hero, when at the last minute he failed to turn up as duty called him to attend a serious patient. Prof. Rajerndra was also respected as a brahmachari, but all that glitters is not Gold.Morality in view of the Prof. is an insipid escape of the weak.

The Prof.’s attention settled on Lajja devi, a college student who was to play as Heroine. He was influenced by her charm. Cornered with none to her rescue, he let go freely his chastity to wind. The scandal took a serious turn resulting in the dismissal of the Prof and expulsion of Lajja from the college. On the pretext to further his studies in Art, Prof. planned to sail to America with the help of Dr. Raj and Hazarilal, another friend.

At the farewell party in his honour, Rehana the dancer finds in him a valuable asset for her future prosperity. For Lajja, the agony deepens when she knows that she would be a mother. After delivering in her sister’s home, she joins as a nurse in Dr. Raj’s hospital. Circumstances and attachment kindle love and both get married.

The Prof, on his return from America, was given a grand reception. Dr. Raj persuades Lajja to attend the party along with her sister Sharda who had come to live with them after her grandmother died. Suresh, son of Hazarilal, loves Sharda, but she prefers seductive Prof and spurns Suresh.

In the party the Prof. attends to Sharda and smiles at Lajja. The Dr. gets suspicious. After going home he asks Lajja the truth. She honestly tells everything frankly to the Dr. and due to this shock, she dies by heart failure. The Dr. tries to save Sharda from the Prof. by telling him everything. Sharda realises her mistake, leaves Prof. and marries Suresh. They live happily.

The other heroine in this film was Radha Rani. She was the daughter of a Military Officer. Born at Quetta, Balochistan, in or around 1920-21, she had a British father and Indian mother. She had total Indian looks. Her initial education and schooling was done in Bombay. She became an expert in Horse Riding, swimming, cycling, driving and skating. She was very beautiful and attractive. At the age 15, she looked quite grown up with distinct features. While in school final itself, she got offers from films. Her first film was Romantic India-36. Being an expert singer, she started singing in films. Next she acted in Badhe Chalo-37.
She was called to Calcutta to act in the film ‘ Swaraj ke Sipahi ‘-37. From Calcutta, she went to Madras to do a role in a Telugu film ‘ Bhakta Jayadeva ‘-38. Returning to Bombay, Radha Rani acted in Sunehra Baal-38 and then joined Wadia movietone. Here she did 7 stunt/action films.

After this she became a freelancer and acted in 18 more films of different banners. She also acted in Punjabi film ‘Kurmai’-41. Her achievements in films were amazing. Stepping directly from the school classroom onto the Silver screen, in her first 5 years of career itself, she had bagged 15 feature films. This was mainly due to her striking screen beauty, linguistic dexterity and histrionic versatility. She was a consummate actress, singer and dancer. She was very fond of reading English literature and would spend time reading books during shooting breaks.

She made a good pair with actor Zahoor Raja in 8 films. She acted in 3 films of his production company and in the film Badal-42, he directed her. Her last film was Rasilee-46. After this film she got married and went to England.
