Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Tilottama-1954.

Made by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia, it was directed by the Trick Master Babubhai Mistry. Music was by the multitasking expert S.N.Tripathi. The cast included Chitra, Kailash, Maruti, Babu raje, Indira Bansal, Heera Sawant, B.M.Vyas and a long list of small time actors, who were regulars in such films. The Lyrics were by G.S.Nepali.

Tilottama was an extraordinarily beautiful apsara from the Swarga. She was especially created by Vishwakarma on Brahma ji’s suggestion. The first chapter of mahabharata – The Adi Parva – mentions that Maharshi Narad detailed the story of Tilottama to Pandavas and warned them that one Draupadi as a wife to 5 Pandavas could become a cause of conflict and that they must be careful about it.

It is mentioned in the 13th Parva that most Gods were seduced by her beauty. One more story says that she was an ugly woman – Kubja – in her previous birth. Due to her sincere penance for 8 years she was born as Tilottama. Due to the curse of Parvati, for trying to seduce Lord Shiva, Tilottama was reborn as Banasura’s daughter- Usha, who finally gets married to Anirudha-Shri Krishna’s grandson, according to Brahma Vaivarta Puran.

The story of the film Tilottama-1954 was…..

Shukracharya the Guru of Asuras had a strong desire to rule the heavens. He always competed with Brihaspati, the Gods’ Guru. To achieve his ambition he created two Asurs- Sund and UpSund. He trained them so that they became invincible. These brothers conquered Prithvi Lok and were to attack the heavens. The Gods became panicky and went to Bramha ji. Bramhaji knew that once these brothers had killed the wife of a poor Bramhin and the Bramhin had given a curse to them that a woman would cause their downfall and death. Bramhaji created the most beautiful apsara -Tilottama and she was sent to these rakshasa. She won their love and returned to heaven.

When Sund-Upsund conquered heaven, they dethroned Indra and made all Gods their captives. At the time of sitting on the Throne both wanted Tilottama as their wife. But Tilottama told them that she will only marry the mightier amongst them. Both Sund and Upsund started fighting with each other and in this they destroyed each other.

Thus the plan of Shukracharya was foiled by the manas kanya of Bramha, Tilottama.

The lead actor of this film was Kailash aka P. Kailash. The name of P. Kailash who had worked as a Hero in the past, may be a matter of surprise for some readers. For a long time, I was very curious about this actor. One day I was reading a book ” Asli Nakli Chehre ” ( असली नकली चेहरे ) by Vithal Pandya. In this book, he has given information about P.Kailash, who did the main role in the film ” Jai Hanuman-48″, for which Pandya was an assistant Director. Vithal Pandya had spent over 30 years in the film industry from the 30s and 40s. He worked with many directors and in many banners. He wrote 2 books in Gujarati/Hindi, which are highly informative with first hand knowledge. For example, he mentions that S N Tripathi, the Music Director was also an actor and was famous in the role of Hanuman in all Wadia movies. However in the film-Jai Hanuman-48, he had done the role of Ravan. Anyway, based on information in this book coupled with an article by M N Sardana ji, on Fb page ‘Woh din yaad karo’ about P.Kailash, here is some information on P.Kailash for our readers, first time. My thanks to both of them.

Mr P Kailash (Pandit Kailash Chandra Sharma),was born on 03 February 1924 at Multai , a small town in Distt Betul ( Madhya Pradesh ) .After doing H.S.C., he did a stint of teaching in Akola . Bestowed with sharp features , and deep voice ,fair coloured P Kailash came to Bombay in 1946 to become an actor . He did not have to wait for a long time to have an entry in the film line .

Seth Chandulal Shah gave him a chance in his mythological movie Jai Hanuman, as the hero opposite Nirupa Roy . The movie, made under the banner of Ranjit Movietone ,was directed by Ramchandra Thakur . Thereafter , Mr Kailash appeared in many mythological , fantasy and historical movies like Veer Durga Das, Sati Anusuiya , Maha Bharat, Prabhu Ki Mahima, Veer Arjun, Gopal Krishna , Nadir Shah, Thief Of Baghdad, Hercules ,Aab E Hayat, Gul E Bakawali etc . In 1953 ,he performed as a cop in Ranjit Movietone’s Papi, along with Raj Kapoor . With Dilip Kumar, he did a role which had comic shades in Leader. Shirin Farhad, made by veteran filmmaker Aspi Irani ,was another movie in which his performance was much appreciated .

Mr P Kailash appeared in numerous movies made by Filmmakers like Shree Ram Bohra ,B K Adarsh and Filmistan. Maine Jeena Seekh Liya, Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain ,Picnic, Baba Sari Ladli (Rajasthani), Jekra Charanwa Me Lagale Paranwa (Bhoj Puri), Love and Murder, were the movies, Mr P Kailash did for the said film makers. Versatile director Krishan Chopra (May God Bless His Soul), who died before completing his second movie ,gave him a lifetime role of a tyrannical landlord in Heera Moti which was based upon the heart warming story Do Bailon Ki Katha ,written by great writer Prem Chand. He brought alive the arrogant and heartless Zamindaar on the screen with his dynamic performance .

Krishan Chopra, impressed with the magnificent personality of Mr P Kailash, gave him an important role in his next movie Gaban ,which was completed by Hrishkesh Mukherjee ,after Mr Chopra passed away untimely. It was a sad coincidence that Mr P Kailash, also did not live long .While on a visit to his birth place Multai, he suffered a massive heart attack and left for his heavenly abode on 23 May 1967 . Payal Ki Jhankaar, made by Filmistan and Thief of Baghdad by Mr Shree Ram Bohra were released later ,after he had gone forever at the young age of 43 years, leaving his two daughters ,one son and wife .

P.Kailash acted in 43 films. His first film was Jai Hanuman-48 and the last released film was Irada-1971.

The director of this film – The great Editor and special effect-Trick scene expert Babubhai Mistri ( 5-9-1918 to 20-12-2010), in the beginning, was an assistant with Prakash pictures.Prakash was making a film “Khwabon ki Duniya”- 37, based on the famous novel “The Invisible Man” by H.G.Wells,1897.The shooting started but the basic problem was how to show the ‘invisible‘ man. There was no special effect technique available in India till then, like in Hollywood.

Vijay Bhatt had an assistant called Babubhai Mistri, who accepted the challenge and using a dim light, a black curtain and a black thread to move articles, he achieved the desired results. This made the film not only a hit and popular one, but also a unique one. Babubhai Mistri, thus, became the father of trick scenes and special effects in India. In the process, Babubhai also earned a nickname of ‘kaala dhaaga‘ (black thread) for the rest of his life, in the film industry.

Babubhai directed 49 Hindi films-mostly B and C grade Mythologicals, Costume, and Historical films. He also directed 1 Telugu and 9 Gujarati films. His first film as a director was Muqabala-42. Surprisingly he started off with a social film, but there was a valid reason. The initial Poster Painter had developed into a skilled Editor and trick scene expert, by his own hard work, encouraged by the Wadia brothers. The film was an unusual film of a story of twin sisters. Wadias wanted Babubhai to do something which will make the film stand out from all other such films.

Directed by Babubhai Mistry, it was the last movie of Fearless Nadia for Wadia Movietone. She had a double role of twin sisters: good Madhuri and bad Rita.
Rita is kidnapped by the villain and made into a Nightclub singer, while Rai Bahadur brings up good Madhuri.
Nadia was appreciated much for the performance contrast for both roles.
This film was First in India to use Split-screen method for double roles, where both sisters could cross each others, shake hands and talk together. The other attraction was the Night club set, which,in case of police Raid, could be converted into a respected residence in few minutes. It was a great fun to watch these two things.

A happy ending picture, but to see and hear the laboured Hindi dialogues of Madhuri (good Nadia) was another treat.

Let us now take a look at what was happening in the film industry, in the year 1954. The 50’s decade was called the Golden Era of HFM, not for nothing. Year after year, the films provided excellent songs, different film Genres, convincing stories, superb acting and Full Paisa Vasool Entertainment. In such a scenario an average music, beaten track stories, mediocre acting, poor direction and lustreless short lived songs had no chance of winning. Today’s film was one such film.

Just before this decade, the Genre of crime story films had already started being popular with films like Apradhi-1949 and Sangram-1950. In 1951 Baazi, in 1952 Jaal etc. continued this trend. The year of 1954 also began with Guru Dutt’s Aar Paar, with hit songs by O.P.Nayyar. Next was Taxi Driver from Navketan. It had foot tapping melodious songs.

Filmistan brought Nastik, which showed the change of a Nastik to being Aastik, Its songs were very good. Filmistan’s Naagin gave Hemant Kumar the necessary boost with hit songs. Minerva’s Mirza Ghalib showered good songs. It also won the President’s Gold Medal – the First for a Hindi film.

After Do Bigha Zameen-1953, Bimal Roy brought Naukari on the issue of unemployment. His other film was Biraj Bahu, an effective Tragedy film, based on Sharat Babu’s novel. Kamini Kaushal won her First and the only Filmfare award for Best Acting.

Film Amar from Mehboob Khan survived with good songs in spite of a weak story. Some films were made for children. Filmistan’s Jagriti, Munna- India’s second songless film from K.A.Abbas, Bimal Roy’s Baap Beti and H.S. Rawail’s Mastana were these films. All had good music too.

Satyen Bose made Parichay, Debki Bose’s last film in Bombay-Kavi Mohan Sehgal’s Aulad were followed by Shantaram’s Subah ka Tara- last film before Shantaram and jayashree were divorced. To save the sinking studio Bombay Talkies from bankruptcy, its employees made the film Baadbaan, in which all artistes, technicians and others worked free of charge. However Bombay Talkies had to be sold to Tolaram jalani. Today, its site in Malad is full of Plastic small factories.

Kala Maharshi Baburao Painter died in 1954. Dilip Kumar became a victim of depression due to his continuous Tragedy films in which he always died in the end and had to seek psychiatric treatment. The year 1954 also saw some films being made in colour partially heralding fully coloured films in a few years later.

Here is a melodious 70 year song, sung by Laxmi Roy, Asha Bhosle and Chorus. Enjoy….
