Today’s song is from a film – Naya Kanoon-1965 – which had an offbeat story on current affairs of IPC. Unfortunately due to several reasons the film was not successful. Two reasons were there. First was, in 1965 so many iconic and milestone movies were made that anything less than their standard was unlikely to have acceptance of the audience. Secondly, the film had inherent lacunae which downgraded it.

First we will see what was happening in the film world in 1965.

A film on the conflicting life philosophies of a father and a son was depicted in the film ASMAN MAHAL. Directed by K.A.Abbas, the film was entirely shot in Hyderabad. Another film having the same theme was OONCHE LOG. Directed by Phani Mujumdar the film had Ashok kumar and Raaj Kumar as the Father- son duo.

SHAHEED had good songs by Lyricist-MD Prem Dhawan.

CHHOTI CHHOTI BATEN – a touching film by Motilal was released after he died. Nadira was in the lead opposite motilal.

GUIDE was a milestone film by Vijay Anand. This was only the second film in which Dev Anand died on screen. (The first such film was ZALZALA-1952. That was the period when Dilip Kumar died in his every film.)

WAQT was a multistarrer hit film.

Ramanand Sagar’s ARZOO was full of sacrifices by Hero and Heroine, but had a happy end. This film, shot in Kashmir, was followed by another film shot in Kashmir- JAB JAB PHOOL KHILE. Nanda- Shash Kapoor unite happily at the end after many obstacles.

HIMALAY KO GOD MEIN by Vijay Bhatt of prakash Pictures was on a theme of Village development.

KHANDAAN showed a joint family troubles and KAAJAL was nothing but sacrifices by women.

In the tradion of his films like Ujala, Singapore, Junglee, professor, Dil tera deewana, Rajkumar etc., Shammi Kapoor appeared in film JAANWAR. In his films, only the Heroines changed, stories were similar.

A different Genre film was GUMNAAM.

III Film Festival was held in Delhi in january-1965 where 39 films from 30 countries were shown.

First Soth Indian film to get the National Best film award was CHEMMEEN.

Geeta bali died in January and Motilal died in June. For Motilal, there was no one for his funeral. His friend Nadira did all the last rites !

Coming back to the film Naya Kanoon-1965. NAYA KANOON(1965) was based on a totally new theme.Around that time,Govt.of India had passed a law(kanoon),that daughters will get equal share of father’s property-just like the sons.

This law had caused a sensation in Indian homes. Some felt that now the daughters will become arrogant, some felt that the brother-sister love will diminish. There was, however a section who were happy with this law.
Naya Kanoon story was built around this new law(naya kanoon).

Ashok kumar (Shekhar) wants to marry his sister V.Mala (Jyoti),in a good house, but everywhere they asked for dowry. The benefit of the new law that Jyoti will get father’s half property, does not cut ice anywhere.Meanwhile Jyoti loves and marries Deepak(B.Bhushan) an unemployed poor poet. Her father and brother break relations with Jyoti.Daya shankar(Badri prasad),the father, however leaves his house to Jyoti in the will. While going for will registration, father dies in accident and then the will is contested in court by the brother.

The naya kanoon comes to the help of Jyoti ultimately,is the entire story.

The reason for the film not to click, was that both Vyjayantimala and Bharat Bhushan were well past their prime. The story line was poor, direction non inspiring and there 2 subplots(one of Omprakash-the munshi and the tension between hero/heroine over her job)which messed up everything.

Even Madan Mohan’s music could not save the film.(Wonder, why Madan Mohan always got floppable films ?)

the film had a cast featuring Ashok Kumar, Vaijayanti mala, Bharat Bhushan, Poornima, Nishi, Leela Mishra, Badri Prasad, Kamal mehra, Om Prakash and others. The film was directed by R.C.Talwar.

R.C.Talwar aka Raghubir Chand Talwar was born on 21-4-1910,at Tollygunge,in Western Punjab-now in Pakistan. His film life, as many others of his ilk, started in Calcutta and ended in Bombay. While at Calcutta,he worked as an assistant to Kidar Sharma. After the success of the film, Aulad / Dil Hi Toh Hai (1939) , the film’s heroine Ramola got romantically involved with R.C. Talwar, Kidar Sharma’s assistant who later became a director in his own right. According to Kidar Sharma, “R.C. Talwar was a classmate and friend so I ignored his relationship with Ramola.”

He was a screenplay writer, producer and Director. Starting from Manchali-43, produced by Talwar productions, Calcutta, which he had established there,Talwar directed films like Albeli, Khiladi, Sangdil, Ilzam, Rukhsana, Memsahib, Ek dil sau afsane and Naya Kanoon-1965.He produced 2 films, Sangdil and Memsahib-for which he had written the s/Play also.

Talwar directed Kishore Kumar in 3 films, Ilzam, Rukhsana and Memsahib. In all films, the Heroine was Meena Kumari. While Ilzam was a social film, Rukhsana was a Costume film and Memsahib was supposed to be a comedy film. This was also produced by him.

After the film Memsahib was completed, Talwar had to pay a balance amount of Rs.8000 to Kishore Kumar. Even after Kishore’s several reminders, Talwar failed to pay Kishore his dues. Kishore Kumar employed a novel idea. Everyday, in the morning, before proceeding for any shooting, Kishore would go to Talwar’s house. Standing outside at his gate, Kishore used to shout loudly,” Hey Talwar,de de mera Aath Hazaar “. This continued for a few days and Talwar was so much disturbed that he paid off Kishore’s dues.

The film had music by Madan Mohan. Among the composers of the 50s and the 60s. Madan Mohan’s name is counted with respect due to his songs based on classical music and the Gazals which he composed. Lata Mangeshkar called him “The prince of Gazals”.

Madan Mohan and C.Ramchandra had the same problem. Actually, their strong point was their weak point- Lata Mangeshkar. When Lata left C.Ramchandra, his career took an irreversible nose dive, ending ultimately. In the case of Madan Mohan, take away Lata from his popular songs and what remains is very little to rejoice !

The way Madan Mohan’s songs were based on classical music, one would think that he was a trained musician. Far from it, he was hardly trained by anyone worth mentioning. It was his natural talent bestowed upon him. Madan Mohan joined the Army as a Second Lt. in 1943 and was out of it by 1945….not because of his love for music. According to Isak Mujawar, the Cine Historian, Madan Mohan was dismissed from the Army for disobeying orders. The reason was, he failed to salute the Union Jack. He was saved from court martial and asked to leave simply.

Another less known fact about him is that he acted in 8 films. Before joining Army, he acted in V.Shantaram’s Shakuntala ( released in 1943) and Parbat pe apna dera ( released in 1944). Before becoming a Composer, he acted again in Intezaar ke baad-47, Sati Ahilya-49 and Narasimha Avatar-49. Even after becoming a Composer, he acted in Ansoo-53,Ratnaghar-55 and Munimji-55. HFGK lists his name in all these films.

Madan Mohan was very fond of singing. Earlier to becoming a Composer he had sung a duet with Lata for Ghulam Hyder, but it was not included in the film ( Shaheed). He had cut some Gazal records also. He sang in 6 films- Aankhen-50, Shabistan-51, Dhun-53, Fifty Fifty-56, Woh Kaun thi-64 and Dastak-70 ( info from Muvyz).

Madan Mohan gave music to 92 films as per his official site ( however, including unreleased films it is 101 films), till Chaal baaz-80. Later his songs were included in the film Veer Zaara-2004. There are albums of his unused songs too. He had 2 sons and 1 daughter .

Madan Mohan gave music for the first time to a film, in which Johnny Walker was working in Gateway of India-57. In 1958 such 2 films came out, Chandan and Khota Paisa. By the way, Khota Paisa -58 was the only film he gave music to, in which Johnny Walker was the Hero. This film had 7 songs. Today’s song is the 4th song to be discussed on this Blog. This song is shot on Johnny Walker and as usual, Rafi uses his special typical voice for Johnny Walker.

here is a 60 year old song sung by a 32 year old Asha Bhosle and chorus. Enjoy….

Editor’s note: This song is the 3400th song of Asha Bhonsle in the blog as a playback singer.

Song- Aankh mein rehte hain wo aur saamne aate naheen (Naya Kanoon)(1965) Singer- Asha Bhosle, Lyricist- Hasrat Jaipuri, MD- Madan Mohan
Female chorus

Lyrics

o o o
aankh mein rehte hain wo
aur saamne aate naheen
ye maze kee baat hai
kya maze kee baat hai
dil mein ghar karte hain wo
aur shakl dikhlaate naheen
ye maze kee baat hai
kya maze kee baat hai jee
kya maze kee baat hai

hoye ye maze kee baat hai

ek din hamko miley
chal diye munh mod kar
o o ek din hamko miley
chal diye munh mod kar
mere dil ka aayina
apne dil se tod kar
pyaar to unko bhee hai aur
pyaar jatlaate bhi naheen
ye maze kee baat hai
kya maze kee baat hai
aankh mein rehte hain wo
aur saamne aate naheen
ye maze kee baat hai
kya maze kee baat hai jee
kya maze kee baat hai

haaye ye maze kee baat hai
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa
aa aa aa aa

band kar loongee nazar
wo to ghabra jaayenge
o band kar loongee nazar
wo to ghabra jaayenge
phir hamaare saamne wo
haathh jode aayenge
saamne aate naheen aur
dil se wo jaate naheen
ye maze kee baat hai
kya maze kee baat hai
aankh mein rehte hain wo aur
saamne aate naheen
ye maze kee baat hai
kya maze kee baat hai jee
kya maze kee baat hai

haaye ye maze kee baat hai
