Today is the last day of the ten-day long ‘Durga Pooja Utsav’ or ‘Navraatree festival’ of this year 2025. The effigies of the demon Ravana are being burnt all over the country to celebrate the victory of Good over the evil. The ten day long staging of Ram Leela will also come to an end today.

Ram Leela is performed in many parts of our country. I was thinking of the past decades from the mid-eighties onwards and I realised that many changes have taken place in the presentation of Raamleelaa thanks to the advancement of technology with time. This can be noticed when the scene on the stage changes from one part to other, where the set up is required to be changed. In olden times the curtains were rolled down to change the backdrop of the characters performing on stage. My guess is that this would have undergone a sea change nowadays where we have technology to help us.

People born before nineties who would have attended Raamleelaa shows in their town or villages must have been witness to funny situations arising during the plays because of various reasons such as forgetting the dialogues, or disruptions due to sudden power-cut etc. These unplanned events during the show would have created situations of laughter and comedy for the audiences.

In this post we cover a song where Raamleelaa is being staged in a village in form of ‘nautankee’. The context of the song in the movie is that Shambhu (Rajesh Khanna) wants the ‘nautankee’ to be arranged for people where he himself will play Raam and take Tulsi (Rekha) as Seeta. His elder brother Kishan (Amol Palekar) is against this. However Jagan (Prem Chopra) whom Shambhu has given this task asks Shambhu money for this arrangements and costumes. Shambhu cheats his brother and arrange the money for organizing Raamleelaa. He also gave Jagan the role of Ravan in this play. However Kishan gets to know about it and he disrupts the show.

‘Aanchal-1980’ was directed by Anil Ganguly for ‘Bemisal Films Pvt Ltd’. Prem Lalwani and Mohan Lalwani were the producers of this movie. It was passed by Censor Board on 18.09.1980. It had Rajesh Khanna, Rakhee Gulzar, Rekha, Prem Chopra, and Amol Palekar, with Leela Mishra, Shammi, Dinesh Hingoo, Ranjana Sachdev, Birbal, Sarita Devi, Asit Sen, Swapan Guha, Amol Sen, Deepak, Master Ravi, Lekha Chauhan, Master Sandeep, Suresh Desai, Saukat Bharti, Jankidas, Rajkishore, Viju Khote, and others. Abhi Bhattacharya had a friendly appearance in this movie. Story of this movie was written by Tara Shankar Bandopadhya, and dialogues were written by Ehsan Rizvi. Screenplay of this movie was written by Sachin Bhowmick. Editing of this movie was done by Waman Bhonsle and Gurudutt Shirali.

“Aanchal-1980” had six songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by R.D. Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, and Swapan Chakravarty had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Here is a brief about this movie that our senior member Shree Raja Swaminathan had recounted in his post while presenting the first song from this movie on the blog on 18.07.2018.

The film stars Kaka, Rekha, Raakhee, Amol Palekar and Prem Chopra. It’s a village-based story, where Kaka and Amol Palekar are brothers, with Raakhee married to Amol Palekar. Since Kaka is her husband’s younger brother, Raakhee treats him with great affection. Kaka too has highest regard for his bhaabhi. Prem Chopra, who has a score to settle with Amol Palekar, plays mischief, creating misunderstanding in his mind about the relationship between Raakhee and Kaka. Also, doing the same to Rekha, who is in love with Kaka. To be honest, the film picks up only in the second half – the first half is rather slow. But maybe it is a build-up to show the relationships between the characters. I was rather keen for the film to get on with the plot.

Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Sapan Chakravarty who are accompanied by chorus. Abhi Bhattacharya, Rajesh Khanna, Prem Chopra, Rekha and many other artistes figure in the picturisation of this song.

Let us enjoy this funny Raamleelaaa song.
