Subir Sen, the composer is himself an accomplished singer. This is a different style of composition. A very delicate fashion, of the tune returning to the mukhda in each stanza/antara. Very delicately done, almost like a breeze, and Rafi Sahab is the master, I think it was very easy for him. Having been singing for S. D. Burman for decades by 1972. One wonders if Subir Sen was testing Rafi Sahab if he could do this. One more thing I have noticed that each time the mukhda lines are repeated, the subtle changes in the lines repeating. There is a slight variation even at the end, when whole mukhda is repeated. Almost imperceptible. And again, the end of the song with final line.
I know there are people, who are singing Rafi Sahab’s popular and critically acclaimed song, with live orchestra in stage shows. They perform these songs with aplomb and sounding very similar to Rafi Sahab’s tenor too. But one needs to return to the original to really appreciate the song and its fine sweetness. May be this is also a blessing Almighty has granted to Rafi Sahab and his songs, that they rarely sound bad even if others sing them. And I am not talking of Javed Ali or Sonu Nigam, there are other talented singers, who are thriving in this profession. People call it imitating, but I do not believe, this sort of reproduction is possible without giving blood and sweat to the task. Focus and devotion to the song, singer, composition, all of it is required and the enjoyment of the person performing the song.
This song has trademark beginning with out of this world softness, plus the truthfulness to the melody.
Recently, I commented about Sanam Puri in the comments section of the post. As a contemporary artists doing cover versions, shooting video’s of performing them with his band, he is notch above the rest. I am partial to him because he has made versions of some of my most favourite songs. Some of them are “lag jaa gale”(Yes lata song), “Kahin door jab din dhal jaaye”, “mere Mehboob Qayamat hogi”, “O mere dil ke chain” and some more. He is just performing in his own voice, with total honesty and no variations to the original. Trying to keep “izzat” of the original. Understated, never going over the top, and colourful outdoor location videos, usually. No masala additions. Orchestration is mostly changed, but lyrical rendition is kept same as the original singer did.
Especially, as he starts Rafi classics such as “Ehsaan tera hoga mujh par” and “Kya hua tera waada”, from the stanza. His video of “Gulaabi Aankhen” shot in Maldives has over 430 million views. This with not a single Gulabi aankh featuring in the video. His latest rendition of “Badan Pe sitaare” is a classic example of sticking to the original in vocals, rare in cover versions by bands. Again, managing to resist including anyone with ‘badan pe sitaare’.
“Gulabi Aankhen”, I thought never featured in any favourites list, not a favourite of orchestra singers, even big-time performers. But after the success of SANAM rendition, this song is the new rage among those singing Rafi Sahab’s songs.
Next such rendition, I am trying to envisage is “O Haseena Zulfonwali”, or call it wishful thinking.
Meanwhile, in the blog, we are far from the scratching the barrel, as for finding Rafi gems. The regulars will agree that all the solo songs we found, which are new to our consciousness, are proving to be so much better than our own expectation. That includes, the song posted by Atulji for the latest century post of Rafi Sahab. I had found it, even started the post months back, but never got around to completing and sending it.

Subir Sen sang quite a few hit songs in the fifties and early sixties mainly under Shankar Jaikishan for the heroes of those days like Rajendra Kumar, Balraj Sahni and Mahmood. As a composer, he was not known much and this is a rare occurrence.
