This article is the 19600th song post in the blog.

Blog Day :

6328 Post No. : 19600

“Mata Mahakali” (1968) was produced and directed by Dhirubhai Desai for Sharad Productions, Bombay. The movie had Shahu Modak, Jaishree Gadkar, Ashish Kumar, Nalini Chonker,Jayant Bhatt, Shahanaz, Mahesh Bhatt, Jayshree Mehta, Polson, Saraswati Devi, B.M.Vyas etc in it.

“Mata Mahakali” (1968) had eight songs in it. Two from the movie has been covered in the blog.

The first song was discussed on the blog five years ago in 2020. The second song was covered earlier this year.

Just on a lark, I decided to look up another song from this movie to cover on the blog. This song sounded so good that I felt that deserved to be covered as a special song.

This song was clearly a classical song that sounds wonderful to listen to. Picturisation of the song shows the singer and his surroundings heating up and fire and smoke coming out. Could this be Deepak Raag ? But then we have discussed while covering our 15000th song post that only two songs in HFM have been sung in Deepak Raag. Deepak Raag is an intense raag and most singers avoid singing it. Most Hindi movie songs that purport to be Deepak Raag are actually Raag Bhopali which is relatively easier to render.

I asked Sudhir Jee (who had all the volumes of books published by K L Pandey jee) to find out what Raag this song was based on. He consulted his books and replied that the song was on Raag Deepak. It was a great discovery, because it was mentioned in the 15000th post that there were only two songs in Raag Deepak that Mr K L Pandey jee recalled. But here is the third one ! That makes this song a more special one than was earlier guessed by me.

That most frequent special occasion on the blog is upon us again. 🙂 The century post ! So it is a fit occasion to cover that special song.

Since the song is in Deepak Raag and it is sung during night time, so it is fitting that this song podt is being published at night time, unlike most century posts that we have been covering of late.

So here is this wonderful song for the listening pleasure of readers. This song is sung y Krishna Rao Chonkar. Bharat Vyas is the lyricist. Music is composed by Avinash Vyas.

Curiously enough, the 15000th song in the blog, that was on deepak Raag was also sung by Krishna Rao Chonkar. What a legend ! He deserves to be better known among music lovers. Sadly very little information is available on him online. I request our knowledgeable readers to provide more information about him.

This context of the song, as can be guessed from the video is that a child dies and his parents call upon a blind musician to revive him. The blind musician sings deepak Raag. By the end of the song, fire lights up and the child gets revived. The song also has sargam (by Krishna Rao Chonkar himself I guess) but they are lip synced by a bearded Saadhu and not by the blind singer. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the actors on whom this song is picturised. I have coloured the sargam portion in different colour in case it is sung by some other singer. Or it could be a case of a single singer lending his voice to two actors on screen.

What a fantastic song to listen to !

I take this opportunity to thank one and all for their continued support and encouragement which is helping this musical bandwagon to pick up some decent momentum. The blog is clocking 100 songs every month and the blog looks set to touch 1000 songs in this calender year. Here is hoping that this musical bandwagon is keep moving for a long time to come and we will keep discovering many more musical gems like this during our journey.
