Today’s song is from a Mythological film- Shiv Shakti-1952.

The film was made by the Producer/Director Jayant Desai, for his own banner- Jayant Desai productions, Bombay. The music was by a specialist- Avinash Vyas. The cast included Nirupa Roy, Trilok Kapoor, Jeevan, Niranjan Sharma, Shakuntala Devi ( she was the mother of actress Ameeta and had acted in few films.), Rewa Shankar and many others.

Dadasaheb Phalke chose the subject of a Mythological story to make his first full length silent film “Raja Harischandra”-1913, because such stories were wholly acceptable to people. Over a period of next 40-50 years, the religious and mythological films,as a group, outnumbered other types of films.

Mythological films survived, not because they are historically true or false, but because they are held to be true in popular traditions. It showed and glorified popularly held beliefs. The Mythological films,as a Genre, were a powerhouse of cultural expression.

The decade of the 50s saw an upward surge in the production of such films and then from the 60s onwards there was a decline in the religious films and today it has become almost negligible. The reasons for decline were many-political,social,cultural,financial and filmic reasons.

Usually the audience of such films was the elderly, women, middle class and rural sectors.Due to changed social family structures, the concept of joint families was not only outdated but also was impossible due to nuclear families and constraints of living space. The younger generation which had all the money to spend now in plenty, detested religious films.Once the audience diminished, making such films became financially unviable. As such the cost of making films ran into Lakhs and the modern publicity requirements and availability of theatres etc. prohibited making religious films.

The mid 70s, however, changed this picture to some extent. The unexpected extraordinary success of “Jai Santoshi Maa”-1975, against a stiff competition from blockbusters like Shoey, Deewar, Aandhi, Chupke chupke etc, ignited a ray of hope.Films like Bhakti mein Bhagwan, Dayar-e-Madina, Jain teerthkshetra Darshan, Maya Machhindra, Mahapaawan Teerth Yatra, Saraswati Laxmi Parvati, Sri Satyanarayan ki Mahapooja and Shri Ram Hanuman Yuddha were made in 1975 itself. It looked like the return of Mythological films, but alas, it died down as fast as it came.

However, one thing happened that the religious films found their way to Television and then onwards, many Dharmik serials started running on TV in the 80s. These serials had a captive audience of senior citizens and women, who had access to TV without stepping outside.

The success of serials like Ramayan, Mahabharat and Devon ke Dev-Mahadev, proved that in India audiences for Mythology were still available.

B.R.Chopra,maker of the Mahabharat serial was once asked why he was not making a Mythological film. His answer was,’ where are the actors these days like Prem Adib,Shahu Modak,Mahipal,Manhar Desai or Trilok kapoor or like Nirupa Roy,Jayashree Gadkar,Shobhana Samarth or Durga khote, who did such roles willingly ? Can you ever imagine Rajesh khanna or Dharmendra as Shri Ram or Shrikrishna ? Where are the specialist composers like S N Tripathi,Avinash Vyas or Chitragupt ? ‘

Anyway let us accept that no such films or no such Bhajans are made anymore. This is the reality.

My attachment to Shiva is from my childhood. After completing his B.A;LL.B in Nagpur, my father got involved in revolutionary activities. That was Veer Savarkar’s circle. After Independence, when Congress Govt. started arresting revolutionaries, my father went underground and took us to Varanasi (Benares or Kashi). We stayed near the Vishveshwar temple and went to Ganga for bath many times. This was the period I learnt many things in religion. I was about 7-8 year old. After Gandhi’s death, my father was arrested and we returned to Hyderabad, escorted by U.P. Police. Soon father was released and started his legal practice. Later I studied many books on religion.

I find that normally people,on average, are very vague about their religion, they have heard about vedas and puranas. Some have heard about Upnishads too. It is all so confusing that I don’t blame anyone. However, today I will try to make it as simple as possible for everybody to Understand.

We all know that there are 4 Vedas-Rigved,Yajurved,Saamved and Atharva Ved.

Each ved has 4 chapters-
1. Mantra
2.Brahmanya-Treatise on mantra
3.Aranyaka-penance in Jungles and
4.-Upanishads-Explanations on Eternal Truths and Guiding Principles(also called Vedant). Upanishads are many ,but main are 12.

These contain- Shruti= knowledge passed on by Listening to rishis
Smritis=Laws of Social set up.
This contains-
1. Itihas or History (Mahabharat,Ramayan,Geeta)
2. Puranas-18 in all,named after Gods
3. Agamas-Laws governing Living Styles of various sects (Vaishnav/ Shaiv/ Shaktya)
4. Darshans-Logical and Practical application Theories on Shruti Knowledge.

Now,the above is the Essence of religion. Among all these the most interesting are PURANAS. These also form the basis for most of our Dharmik films. Puranas are a mix of History and Imaginary stories about Gods,Demons etc. These stories are very enchanting but one must remember that THIS is not Religion.
It is only a way to pass on rules, laws, and advice to common people in the guise of stories.

The story of the film Shiv Shakti-1952 actually combines 2 major events in the life of Lord Shiv, according to Shiv-puran.

1.The marriage of Sati with Shiv, against the wishes of her father-Daksha, her insult and self immolation in the Daksha-Yadnya,Shiva’s Tandav etc and
2.Destruction of the Demon-Andhaka, son of Hiranyakshya.

In the cast of the film, there is the name of Rewa Shankar. Some of the artists from the early era of films – silent and Talkie – spilled over many subsequent years. Rewa Shankar was one such artist.

I tried very hard to get some information about Rewa Shankar Marwadi, who was an actor, lyricist, singer and also music director in the 1930s and 1940s. However I could not get anything concrete. Anyway I found a note on this multi talented artist of the early era, written by Shri Dhananjay Naniwadekar aka Nani, on the old RMIM forum, some 15 years ago and adapted by me for this article.

Some of Ranjit Movietone’s earliest talkie films had music by Ustad Jhande Khan. Next came the trio of Banne Khan, Ganga Prasad Pathak and Rewa Shankar Marwari. None of that music was ever released on 78 rpm records. From 1938-39, the great duo of Gyan Dutt and Khemchand Prakash took over the charge of Ranjit’s music, later to be joined by Bulo C Rani. It was only around 1938 that Ranjit started releasing its film music on 78-rpm records.

Rewa Shankar Marwari’s association with Ranjit Films and films produced or directed by ex-Ranjit hand Jayant Desai continued in the
1940s. While it is a pleasant surprise that imdb.com has a page for an obscure name like ‘Rewashankar Marwadi’ at all, it is not surprising
that his filmography has been put together for the site by people who are far from competent at that sort of thing. He acted in 27 films, till 1955, sang 12 songs in 9 films and gave music to 21 films from ‘Veer Babruwahan’ (1934) to ‘Matrubhoomi’ (1949). After 1949 only, he started acting in films.

Rewashankar Marwadi and Gangaprasad Pathak gave music together for Gunsundari- 1934 as well as the film Raat ki Raani-35. Rewashankar Marwadi then made a pucca pair with composer Banne Khan and this pair gave music to 12 films, as a pair. ( Barrister’s wife-35, College girl-35, Qeemati aansoo-35, Noor-e-watan-35, Chalaak chor-36, Raj Ramani-36, Dil ka daaku-36, Sipahi ki sajani-36, Matlabi Duniya-36, Lehri lala-36, Ghazi Diler-36 and Mitti ka putla-37 ). In my opinion, they should be considered the first pair of MDs as well as Trend setters and NOT Husnlal-Bhagatram. Of course the number of films the H-B team did was more ( 52), but that is because after 1935, the speed of making films increased. More films were made in the 40s and the 50s than in the 30s. Moreover many composers left for Pakistan in the late 40s, so more films for less composers were available. Numbers aside, but lack of enough knowledge about the early films and artists has led to much injustice to the Pioneers, for sure !

Today’s song is sung by Geeta Roy. Enjoy….
