Kamsune/Unsune songs of Asha Bhosle – 76

“Main Masoom Dil Masoom” by Asha Bhosle is written by Javed Anwar and composed by Usha Khanna. This song is from “Alibaba And Forty Thieves” (1966).

Four out of seven songs have already been posted on the blog. Here’s the fifth song.

“Alibaba And 40 Thieves” (1966) was directed by Homi Wadia for Basant Pictures, Bombay. This movie had Sanjeev Kumar, L Vijayalaxmi, S N Tripathi, Veena, Amarnath B M Vyas, David Abraham, Indira, Tabassum etc in it.

There may not be any person reading this blog who has not heard the story of Alibaba and 40 Thieves. However, here’s a brief story.

This 1966 film “Alibaba And 40 Thieves” is a classic Bollywood adventure fantasy, based on the famous folk tale from the Arabian Nights (One Thousand and One Nights).

The film follows the journey of Alibaba (played by Sanjeev Kumar), a poor but kind-hearted woodcutter who lives in a fictional town with his mother and his wealthier, greedier elder brother, Qasim.

While cutting wood in the forest, Alibaba stumbles upon a gang of forty fearsome thieves who are using a magical spell—the famous phrase “Khul Ja Sim Sim” (Open Sesame)—to open the mouth of a hidden cave where they store their immense treasure.

After the thieves leave, Alibaba uses the magical words to enter the cave, which is filled with unimaginable riches. He takes a small portion of the gold and jewels, primarily to help his struggling family and, in some adaptations, to aid his impoverished village.

Alibaba’s sudden, moderate wealth draws the attention of his envious brother, Qasim. Driven by greed, Qasim forces Alibaba to reveal the secret of the cave and the magical command. Qasim visits the cave and, in his haste to gather as much treasure as possible, forgets the magic words to open the door and escape. The forty thieves return, find Qasim trapped inside, and kill him.

When the thieves discover that someone else knows their secret and has been intruding, their leader, the cunning Daku Sardar, becomes determined to find and kill the person who stole their treasure and caused Qasim’s death.

This being Hindi film, the creators have added elements of romance and political drama.

Alibaba may be shown rescuing a Princess Marjina (played by L. Vijayalakshmi) from an evil usurper, and she becomes his love interest and loyal helper.

The thief leader eventually finds Alibaba’s house and devises a masterful plan. He poses as an oil merchant and brings 40 large jars to Alibaba’s home, claiming to need a place to rest for the night. In reality, 39 of the jars hide the other thieves, with only one jar containing oil. They plan to ambush and kill Alibaba in his sleep.

Alibaba is saved by the quick thinking and bravery of the woman (Marjina) who discovers the thieves hidden in the jars. She uses her wit to kill the thieves while they are hidden, thus saving Alibaba’s life completely.

The story ends with Alibaba being left as the only person knowing the secret of the cave, having successfully outwitted the bandits and securing his fortune, often leading to him sharing his wealth and living happily with Marjina.

In this song, Marjina (L Vijaylakshmi) dances and lip syncs the song, in front of the sardar and his 39 thieves.
