There are some people, who are in our lives, not related to us by blood, but are a very important part of our daily lives. Whom we meet every day, they come and wish us in the morning, they serve us, do a job for us to make our life easier. Yet some form an affinity, a well-wishing, non-interfering, loyal, non-judgmental, they are a friend of the family. Your children, your neighbor’s family, your acquaintances, your relatives, family members in far off and nearby places, your colleagues, your business associates, or whomever you come in regular contact with, associate that person as your so and so.
Suddenly, one day you hear that he is no more. And you utter “inna lillahi wa innahir raajiuun”, ask his son how it happened, ask of the family members being able to come for the funeral. The son sounds composed, as he is alone among the children present, so he must handle everything. You also speak to him normally. Say that it is all Allah’s will and he was destined to live only this long. Say a brief dua, that may Allah swt grant him maghfirah and sabr e Jameel to the family.
It is a given, that all must go one day. Surely to Allah swt we all belong, and to him we shall all return. But the suddenness of it, the sheer unexpected absence, from your daily routine, hits hard.
The young called him uncle, even the very young children in the building, were often calling out to him. The adults and even old people called him bhai. He was with us to almost 12 years, continuously. Often told my husband that he wants to work for him till “last”. Though we got advice from some, that he is now old, not very prudent to keep him on. But somehow, it never was to happen. I told my husband to keep him on part time, as he cannot take us long distances. My husband also advised him to be free, and rest, as the children are well settled, he does not really need to work. But he always said no, “I want to earn my own money for my expenses, do not want to depend on my sons.” In the end, he was on duty even the day before.
He came from a village in “Murud”, a family heritage in coastal Maharashtra. He was full of old stories of his parents, family, friends, neighbors etc. Some wise, some funny. Made friends wherever he travelled with us. Fond of bikes, a neighbor just told me, that he was always speaking to him about bikes. He spent major part of his working life in Kuwait. So knew all about foreign cars and vehicles. Always on the road, he would tell me “Madam…. Do you know how much that car costs?”. Major thing that kept him with us, I realize now, is his circumspection. Though by nature a talkative person, he never spoke out of place on any occasion. I cannot recall a single instance, when he said something out of turn, or made a comment which is not his business to talk about, or a faux pas. Never.
He was like the actor Aagha in demeanor and gait. For some years now, he had a totally clean-shaven head, so my office colleagues took to referring to him as “Shakaal”.
A person, is just so much. Day in and day out, he is there, on time, neat, and immaculately dressed. Sometimes, when he did not want to take me to the fish market in the evening, he would say, “main kal aap ko machhi banaa ke laa ke deta hoon ghar se”. Okay, so that s not going to happen anymore.
A peculiar habit he had, he would never park the car, where he dropped me. Always will go a distance away. I would ask him, where did you go, he said “main udhar chhaon mein gadi khada kiya”. I would say “Lekin yehan bhi to chhaon hai, parking bhi khali hai”, he would not answer. The silence was such that one could not argue further. Or he will start talking of something else.
Recently, upon this very complain, my husband told me, he does not park where we can see him, because, he is always talking to someone on the phone, while waiting. Fair enough. Talking to friends and relatives in the village, or even some of our relatives in the native place, whenever he was free. He liked to keep in touch with people, but never gossiped about them. Whenever, we are in the car, he would pick up the phone when it rang, always said to the caller, “abhi gaadi chala raha hoon, baad mein call karta hoon”. Following a rule and maintaining discipline. Not our doing, some previous employer instilled in him.
His given name, means,
friend, companion, or comrade,” often implying a kind, gentle, or affectionate one, one of the 99 Names of Allah (meaning “The Gentle Companion). It signifies strong support and camaraderie.
In a post last month, I said that this year has been full of tragedies, small and big, personal, and not so personal, some man made and some natural calamities. I said hopefully the remaining time will be bringing happy news. Happy news was there, which was expected and long overdue. But this unexpected loss was also waiting to happen, that s just the way things are, and remind us of the one power above, with all the strings.
That day, when the son called to tell the sad news, I was writing the post of this song. After I kept the phone, I could not do anything else, just closed the lap top, without saving. When next I opened the laptop, all I had written had got deleted, as the file was also open. I tried to retrieve the 2-3 paragraphs written on water transport, but could not be done. I was writing anniversary post of this solo song, and thought this is a good song for the occasion.
The following two songs from this film are posted.
| Song | Date of post |
|---|---|
| Chori chori aap pe dil aaya | 1 August 2013 |
| Jeene na dega tumko andaaz kaafiraana | 21 April 2015 |
It is a Rafi solo, with chorus. The lyrics are by Faarooq Qaisar, and the songs are composed by Chitragupt.
I heard this song for the first time months ago, and saved the link for posting in future. This song, I think suits the personality and the spirit of the departed soul. Faarooq Kaiser uses words like, jazbaati, neeyat, barkat and the term “bedaa lagegaa paar”.
This is a song filmed on the boat with central characters played by Dara Singh and Ameeta are on a ship and Dara Singh is singing this with the crew members giving chorus.
“Bedaa lagegaa paar” or “bedaa paar lagaa do” are very common usage terms. There is the opposite of it “bedaa garq”, implying all is lost or great loss. For those who do not know, bedaa, means a fleet of ships. So bedaa garq is used to imply a loss as if a fleet of ships is lost at sea.
Writing about things having deep effect on us, is therapeutic. I could not have guessed, that I could write so much on the matter. Here is praying that he reaches the “manzil” on the 7th sky, sooner.
