Pancham’s Music – Eighties-to-Nineties (1981-1994…) Duets-9
Today’s duet composition by Rahul Dev Burman is from the movie ‘Gunehgaar Kaun-1991’. It was directed by Ashok Gaikwad for ‘Barkha Movies Pvt Ltd, Bombay’. The producers for this movie were Smt Reena Khan (i.e. Reena Roy who had Mohsin Khan), Sharda Roy and Anju Roy. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 08.03.1991. The cast of this movie has Raj Babbar, Mohsin Khan, Sujata Mehta, Sangeeta Bijlani, Saeed Jaffery, Satyen Kappu, Anjan Shrivastava, Gurbachan, Brijesh and Paresh Rawal. This movie introduced Nishigandha (Nishigandha Wad who was already working in Marathi movies then). The story and screenplay of this movie was written by Santosh K Saroj. And Dialogues of this movie were written by Santosh K Saroj and Rajkumar Bedi. Editing of this movie was done by the famous editing duo Waman Bhonsle & Gurudutt Shirali (mentioned as Waman-Guru in the title of the movie).
‘Gunehgaar Kaun-1991’ has five songs (including one multiple version song) which were written by Majrooh Sultanpuri. The collaboration of Majrooh Sultanpuri and Rahul Dev Burman has given us great songs and great music. They worked together in 74 movies creating 402 songs in all.
The credits of this movie mention only Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh as the playback singers of this movie. However in the book ‘Pancham’ (An Anthology of R.D. Burman’s Musical Work compiled by Vishwas Nerurkar & assisted by Bishwanath Chatterjee, Suresh Wadkar and Sadhna Sargam are also mentioned. Today’s song is a romantic duet sung by Shailendra Singh and Asha Bhonsle. The song is picturised on Mohsin Khan and Sangeeta Bijlani. They are seen romancing on the streets, in gardens and around beaches. Fishermen and fisherwomen join them in dancing (but not singing) towards the end of the song.
