Hullo Atuldom

There are so many possible songs to go with today’s post. Songs that will do justice to the personality and versatile talent of the concerned celebrity.
He was an actor born with acting in his genes. He was not a star-kid but a star-heir, facing the camera for the first time when he was barely 2 or 3 years old. He was seen next as an adolescent playing his father’s Bachpan. All that I have written are well known facts about this actor, who in later years turned a producer-director much like his father. Along with his brothers he tried to keep the studio and banner, set up by his showman father, aloft till 2017 when the iconic property in Mumbai’s Chembur area caught fire and collapsed during the shoot of a television reality show. The brothers then decided to pull down the shutters on a piece of history of Indian cinema.

Regular movie-buffs will know that I am speaking of Raj Kapoor’s sons- Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv and the RK Films and RK Studios. The last movie that came from this banner was “Aa Ab Laut Chalen” (1999) which was directed by Rishi Kapoor. Before that “Prem Granth” (1996) which was directed by Rajiv Kapoor and “Henna” (1991) directed by Randhir Kapoor were the offerings from RK Films both of which had Rishi Kapoor playing the central character.

As I mentioned above Rishi Kapoor had acting in his genes with all the males (before him) from his family, being in the entertainment industry -Prithviraj Kapoor (grandfather), Raj Kapoor (father) Shammi Kapoor & Shashi Kapoor (uncles). Chintu (as Rishi Kapoor used to be addressed fondly) had shared screen space with his uncles and has been directed by his father in a few movies. I doubt if has appeared in any movie with his niece- Karisma and Kareena; but he has acted with his son Ranbir which was incidentally his wife Neetu’s comeback to movies, after she quit the limelight for family life.

The last movie that he faced the camera for, post his return from USA after undergoing treatment for the dreaded C, released on an OTT channel on 31st March 2022. I happened to see this for the love of Chintu and I must say ‘I was not disappointed’.

Chintu was one actor who had always emoted well and things were not any different in “Sharmaji Namkeen”. The unique thing about the film was the way they had two actors play a single character. Maybe a first in Indian movies. Actually, there was about four days shoot left, of the movie, at the time of Chintu’s passing. Paresh Rawal stepped in and the movie was completed. The makers didn’t re-shoot the parts which Chintu had completed. Instead, the transition in the scenes with the two actors was kept seamless and they didn’t try to get a single person to dub for the two actors (both actors spoke in their own voice). I would love to see the movie all over again just to enjoy the smooth handling of the movie. It had all the trademark stuff that fans of Chintu loved him for including the sweaters and mufflers that he was famous for.

Much as I would like to share a song from “Sharmaji Namkeen” in this post I am settling for one of his popular numbers from the ’70s. (Link to Sharmaji songs is not yet available on Youtube).

Today’s song may well be one of those categorized as “How come this song was not posted earlier?”. It features Chintu with Neetu Singh and is written by Gulshan Bawra. Kalyanji Anandji are the music directors of this song that is sung by Shailendra Singh and Asha Bhonsle.

This movie, “Rafoo Chakkar” (1975), was directed by Narinder Bedi and produced by House of Nadiadwalas. It had Faryal, Asrani, Paintal, Rajindernath, Sulochana, Mumtaz Begum, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Shetty, Kamran, etc in addition to the lead pair of Neetu Singh and Rishi Kapoor. It had six songs of which the blog has the following four.

Song Date of posting
Chhu chhuk chhak chhak Bombay se Baroda tak 4 September 2012
Dil lena buri bala hai 22 August 2013
Tumko mere dil ne pukaara hai 21 January 2014
Bhajan bina chain na aaye Raam 30 June 2020

Let us enjoy the locales of Kashmir and remember how simple life was back in the 70s. The girl needed to educate the guy ‘what love was all about’ 🙂

Song-Kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai (Rafoo Chakkar)(1975) Singers-Shailendra Singh, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Gulshan Baawra, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
koi dil pe agar chha jaaye to kya hota hai

wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai

mujhko zulfon ke saaye mein so jaane do sanam
mujhko zulfon ke saaye mein so jaane do sanam
ho raha hai jo dil mein ho jaane do sanam
ho raha hai jo dil mein ho jaane do sanam

baat dil ki dil mein rah jaaye to phir kya hota hai
baat dil ki dil mein rah jaaye to phir kya hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoo e khuda hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai

kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai

kya manzoor hai khuda ko baataao to zara
kya manzoor hai khuda ko bataao to zara

jaan jaaogi, baahon mein aa jaao to zara
jaan jaaogi, baahon mein aa jaao to zara
koi jo baahon mein aa jaaye to phir kya hota hai
koi jo baahon mein aa jaaye to phir kya hota hai

wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai
kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
kisi pe dil agar aa jaaye to kya hota hai
wahi hota hai jo manzoor e khuda hota hai

Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 9
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –- – –

Today 29th December’2021 is the seventy-nineth birth anniversary (29 December 1942 – 18 July 2012) of Rajesh Khanna, born as Jatin Khanna.

On this occasion we pay our tributes to him and listen a song from one of his movies.

In this ninth episode of ‘Rajesh Khanna- The Phenomenon’ we look at Rajesh Khanna movies in the year 1982. In the year 1982 the following six movies of Rajesh Khanna were released (including ‘Disco Dancer’* where he had a friendly appearance).

In the previous post in this series ‘Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 8’ we had discussed how Rajesh Khanna in the late seventies switched on to different roles exploring and introspecting himself and taking a new challenge for his ‘second innings’.

In the late seventies and early eighties, he has a string of successful movies viz. ‘Amardeep’ (1979), ’Thodi Si Bewafaai’ (1980), and critically acclaimed movies like ‘Red Rose) (1980), ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980), and ‘Bandish’ (1980).

In 1981 he tasted more success with movies like ‘Dard’, ‘Dhanwan’, ‘Dil e Naadan’, ‘Qudrat’ and ‘Fifty-Fifty’.

‘Qudrat’ (1981) was a multi-starrer movie and had good success at the box-office. That saw Kaka putting more efforts to change his image and considering films in the ‘multi-starrer’ and ‘action’ genres, which he thought earlier was not his ‘cup of tea’. It can also be said that these two ‘genres’, where he was not doing films, were partly responsible for the failure of his earlier movies on the box-office.

In 1982 we had Kaka’s films like ‘Raaput’, ‘Ashaanti’, ‘Dharam Kaanta’ which were multi-starrer as well as action movies. He further continued doing such ‘multi-starrer-masaala’ films like ‘Paapi Pet Ka Sawaal Hai’, ‘Dharm Aur Qaanoon’, ‘Maqsad’, ‘Bewafaai’, ‘Awaam’, ‘Vijay’, etc. coming in the next few years.

Today’s song is from one of the above movies and that movie is ‘Ashaanti’. This song also beautifully catches the ‘spirit of team efforts’ instead of a ‘one-man-show’ and advocates ‘helping each other’ to get success.

‘Ashaanti’ is directed by Umesh Mehra for Eagle Films, Bombay, and is produced by Parvesh C. Mehra.

The movie has Rajesh Khanna, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi, Mithun Chakravarty, Kanwaljeet, Amrish Puri, Jeevan, Narendra Nath, Monty, Mac Mohan, Kishore Kapoor, Yusuf Khan, Ram Sethi, Nadira, Satyen Kappu, Bob Christo, Mohan Choti, Avtar Gill, Ajay Agrawal, Amir Jambra, Yusuf, Ganesh, and others. Prem Kishan and Ramesh Deo makes a special appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 01.05.1982.

This movie has five songs composed by RD Burman. Lyrics for all the five songs are penned by Anand Bakshi. Following is the list of songs this movie had.

“Ahsaas”(1979) was directed by S K Suri for Sippy Films, Bombay. This movie had Dina, Parwez, Rakesh Bedi, Kiran Vairaaale, Sahil, Reetarani Kaul, Chaand Usmani, Leela Mishra, Sundar, Mohan Sherry, Asha Potdar, Arun Desai, Deepak, Raj, Sanjay Kaushik, Ashok junior, K S Deshpande, Dinanath etc. The movie had special appearances by Shammi Kapoor, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi, Simmi, Bindu, Simple Kapadia and Amjad Khan.

This movie, a “quickie” movie between “Sholay” (1975) and “Shaan” (1980) was made with unknown names. This “A” certificate movie, which was publicised on the strength of its special appearance artists viz Amitabh Bachchan, Parveen Babi etc failed at the box office.

I was one of those people who had watched this movie first day first show when it was released in Ranchi (bunking college in the process) and I was duly disappointed.

I disliked the movie and also its songs.

Many decades later, I began to find the songs of this movie to be hummable.

The movie had six songs in it.

Five songs have been covered in the blog so far :-

Song Date
Sapnon ke shahar ham banaayenge ghar 22 May 2009
Kitne Raanjhe tujhe dekhkar bairaagi ban gaye 26 February 2010
Kuchh khone ko dil karta hai 17 August 2012
Roothho na roothho na 7 August 2018
Jo na chhote hain na bade 26 February 2020

Here is the sixth and final song from “Ahsaas”(1979) to appear in the blog. The movie opens with this song. It is sung by Kishore Kumar and Shailendra Singh. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. The song is picturised on Parvez and Rakesh Bedi who are seen riding motorbikes, trying to ape Amitabh Bachchan’s motor bike riding song in “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”(1978) – Rote huye aate hain sab hanstaa huaa jo jaayegaa . These two non stars looked ridiculous to me in this picturisation.

Now , more than four decades later, I have grudgingly begun to like this song, not for its picturisation but for its singing. The upstart hero Parvez had the rare privilege of lip syncing in the voice of Kishore Kumar in this movie including in this song. Rakesh Bedi, who played Hero’s side kick, got to lip sync in the voice of Shailendra Singh.

With this song, all the six songs of “Ahsaas”(1979) have been covered in the blog and the movie joins the list of movies that have been YIPPEED in the blog.

In today’s post we move on to Pancham’s music in 1984.

Pancham continued entertaining his audience by composing good music in this year ‘1984’ too. There were as many as seventeen movies (released) in this year 1984, where the music was composed by Rahul Dev Burman or our beloved Pancham Da.

The list of these seventeen movies is as listed below.

In-spite of composing good music and giving some timeless classics in some of the above movies, none of the song from the above movies appeared in the ‘annual list of Binaca Geetmala’ that year of 1984.

Songs of ‘Hero-1983’, ‘Sharaabi-1984’ and ‘Tohfa-1984’ ruled the roost by securing number 1,2 and 3 respectively. Another song of ‘Tohfa-1984’ was on number four.

If I am asked to select the best of Pancham that year the album “Duniya-1984” certainly was the topper for me. It had a varied range of songs composed by Pancham – the foot tapping ‘tu chaand nagar ki shehzaadi’, taking you far from world ‘gehre halke, halke gehre’, the philosophical ‘phirte hain kab se dar-badar’, the entertaining ‘duniya bahut hi kamaal hai’, the party song ‘jhoomti raat jawaan’ and lovely one ‘teri meri zindagi pyaar bhari zindagi’. The lyrics of all the songs by Javed Akhtar were all magical.

The movie ‘Sunny’ (aur kya ahd e wafaa hote hain etc), ‘Zameen Aasmaan’, ‘Aawaaz’, ‘Ham Hain Laajawaab’, ‘Jhoothha Sach’ also have some good compositions by Pancham. But the albums mostly heard and were a run-away hits were songs from ‘Jawaani’ and ‘Manzil Manzil’. However, none of them made it to the ‘Binaca Geetmala annual list of 1984’.

Today we are going to listen to a song from the movie ‘Manzil-Manzil’. This song is picturised on Dimple Kapdadia and Sunny Deol who are lip-syncing for the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh respectively.

This song has two parts, the first one is the duet, and second part is in the voice of Shailendra Singh which is the ‘third stanza’ of the duet repeated in slower version. This song stood at sixth rank in the ‘annual Binaca Geetmala of 1985’.

One song of ‘Manzil Manzil’ stood at rank twenty-three while one song from ‘Jawaani-1984’ ranked at number eleven and one song from the movie ‘Jhoothha Sach-1984’ appeared on in the annual list of Binaca Geetmala of 1985.

Let us have a look on the details of today’s movie now.

“Manzil Manzil” was directed by Nasir Hussain for his home productions ‘Nasir Hussain Films, Bombay’. Nasir Hussain was also the producer of this movie, and he wrote dialogues of this movie too.

This movie had Dimple Kapadia, Sunny Deol, Prem Chopra, Danny Dengzongpa, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Tariq, T.P. Jain, Rinku Jaiswal, Sajida, Surendra Pal, Raj Bibra, Abid Sayyad, V. Malhotra, Ahmed Khan, Moijuddin, Meghdoot, D.S. Rana, K.K. Raj, Ramesh Goyal, Naveen Kumar, Dolly Jena, Anuradha, Leena Das, Jazbel, Nihal Khan, Hemendra Sinha, Deval Raiji and others.

Actor Feroz made his debut in this movie.

Asha Parekh and Ravindra Kapoor make friendly appearance sin this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 26.09.1984.

Hullo Atuldom

“Ham Paanch” was a movie that released towards the end of 1980. It was presented by S K Films Enterprises and was produced by Surinder Kapoor having Boney Kapoor as executive producer. It was directed by Sattiraju Lakshmi Narayana known professionally as Bapu. It had a huge star cast headed by Sanjeev Kumar, Shabana Azmi, Deepti Naval, Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Mithun Chakravarthy, Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover, Uday Chandra, Aruna Irani, Dulari, Gita Siddharth, Roopesh Kumar, A K Hangal and Kanhaiyalal along with a whole set of known faces that constitute the firmament of Bollywood’s supporting actors.

The movie was a remake of the 1978 Kannada film “Paduvaaralli Pandavaru” which in itself was an adaptation of the Mahabharata. It had music by Laxmi-Pyare and songs were written by Anand Bakshi. Playback singers used were also the gems of Bollywood: – Mohd Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Shailendra Singh, Amit Kumar, Suresh Wadkar, Anwar and Usha Uthup.

The movie had around 8 songs and made its debut on the blog with this song/ post by Sudhirji in 2016. Its been 5 years since that post and it is high time we have another song, unfortunately I have found links to audios of all the songs. But I have seen these songs and movies eons back and so I can tell that today’s song is being lip synced by Naseer, Mithun, Raj Babbar, Gulshan Grover and Uday Chandra (playback was by Amit Kumar, Shailendra Singh, Anwar and Suresh Wadkar). It has these youngsters protesting the tyrannical ways of the local Zamindar (Amrish Puri) who is helped in his mission of ruling the small region in rural India by his munim (Kanhaiyalal in one of his brilliant acts as Munim). The youngsters are guided in their job by Sanjeev Kumar playing Krishna who incidentally happens to be the brother of the Zamindar. I remember that the little sounds that are off-beat in the song (Amit Kumar’s voice) were lip synced by Mithun. How I wish we had the video, my personal recommendation would be to see the movie to enjoy the full essence of the songs and see actors like Gulshan Grover and Raj Babbar in ‘hatke’ (different) avatars.

We are having this song today to wish Raj Babbar on his 69th birthday; my initial reaction when I discovered his age was “Oh! Is he that old!!!” Next was almost all the actors who played ‘paandavs’ in “Ham Paanch” are in the same age bracket and this man, along with Gulshan Grover I suppose, are the youngest. Raj Babbar, who was born in Agra- UP, made his way to movies through NSD. He was first hated for the character that he played in B R Chopra’s ‘Insaaf Ka Tarazu’ in 1980 which released around the same time as ‘Ham Paanch’. Prior to that he had appeared in ‘Kissa Kursi kaa’.

He had around 7 releases in 1980 with ‘Aap Toh Aise Na the’; Insaaf Ka Tarazu’; ‘Sau Din Saas Ke’ and ‘Ham Paanch’ still being in public memory. He has appeared in a few Punjabi movies too. He is an actor who has played all kinds of characters- positive, negative and grey too. Sometime in the ’90s he switched to playing fatherly characters which could be negative too. He was a three-time member of the Lok Sabha and two-time member of the Rajya Sabha. His children Juhi and Arya from his wife Nadira and Prateik from Smita Patil (to whom he was married till her death due to complications in child-birth) are all actors. He has also produced a few movies.

If we had the video of the songs of this movie we would have also been able to the see the fantastic-large eyed-baritone voiced Amrish Puri in what he was excellent in that period. He would have turned 89 on 22nd June had he been around.

Here is wishing Raj Babbar health and happiness and thank you for entertaining us for close to 45 years.
Editor’s note:- With this song, Laxmikant Pyarelal now have 900 songs in the blog as music directors.

Hullo Atuldom

“Saagar” (1985) was produced by G P Sippy and directed by Ramesh Sippy. Its story, screenplay and lyrics were written by Jawed Akhtar and RD Burman was music director. The movie had 7 songs of which the blog has 5 but in my opinion we have covered six songs as the sad version of ‘saagar kinaare dil ye pukaare’ is found in the comments of post; which means that with today’s post “Saagar” will be YYIIPPEEEED!!!

Song Date of post
Maria o Maria 3 September 2008
Saagar kinaare dil ye pukaare 29 November 2008
Yoonhi gaate raho 9 August 2013
Ho chehra hai ya chaand khila hai 17 June 2018
Sach mere yaar hai 7 November 2020

We can see “Saagar” made its debut in 2008 ( 2 songs) then the next one came 5 years later. The movie waited for another 5 years when Atulji posted ‘chehra hai ya chaand khila hai’ and then we had a song last November.

“Saagar” was a star-studded movie (a term which was very commonly used in those times) with Dimple Kapadia (who was making a return to films), Rishi Kapoor, Kamal Haasan, Saeed Jaffrey, Nadira, Madhur Jaffrey, Kiran Vairale, Shafi Inaamdar, Satish Kaushik, A K Hangal etc. Kishore Kumar, S P Balasubrahmanyam, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Shailendra Singh. ‘Chehra hai ya chaand khila hai’ got Kishore Kumar his 8th Filmfare award. It was a film that was sent as an entry to the Academy Awards in the Foreign Language category. Interestingly, Kamal Haasan was nominated under the Best Actor and Best Actor supporting categories in the Filmfare awards of that year. He won it in the Best Actor category, his only award in Hindi films. Before that, in 1968, Ashok Kumar was nominated in two categories for ‘Aashirwad’. The movie had a very simple story of two friends falling in love with the same girl with an economic classes clash thrown in for good measure.

I had lots of songs to choose from for today’s post to wish Dimple Kapadia on her 64th birthday. This song from ‘Saagar’ gives us a glimpse of how beautiful Dimple is/was. How gorgeous her hair is/was. How elegant she is/was. Though she had signed ‘Saagar’ first other movies like ‘Zakhmi Sher’, ‘Lava’, ‘Manzil Manzil’ etc released first. She has since been seen in many movies where her characters have showed emotions, drama, action etc.

It was not easy writing out the lyrics to this song. There are so many different styles of breathing intonation, I didn’t know if the sound ‘ssh’ with which the song begins is a word or the character catching her breath when the hero touching her. But all-in-all a very romantic song and there is a beautiful play of lights reflecting off the waters of the pool.

Happy Birthday Dimple. may you have many more…

Hullo Atuldom

“Coolie” was released on 2nd December 1983. It was produced by Ketan Desai and directed by Manmohan Desai. Kadar Khan was the script writer as also the dialogue writer. It starred Waheeda Rehman, Rati Agnihotri, Shoma Anand, Rishi Kapoor, Kadar Khan, Satyen Kappu, Goga Kapoor, Suresh Oberoi, Om Shivpuri, Nilu Phule, Ashalata (who passed away recently),and Shubha Khote, Amrish Puri and Mukri in guest appearances. Of course it had Manmohan Desai cast Amitabh Bachchan in the title role with an Eagle as his companion. The Eagle was called Allah Rakha in the movie.

The movie had Kadar Khan give some great dialogues to his characters, some of which were heavy duty and some were funny. For example Iqbal introduces himself with “Humaari taarif zara lambi hai. Bachpan se hain sar pe Allah ka haath aur Allahrakha hai apne saath. Baju pe 786 ka hai billa, 20 number ki bidi peeta hoon. kaam karta hoon coolie ka aur naam hai Iqbal”. He follows it up with “jiske sar pe pad jaaye haath bache na uska ek bhi baal” and that get smirks from the audience. Then during the course of a fight scene with Suresh Oberoi, Amitabh Bachchan picks up a Hammer and Sickle, holds it up in a particular fashion and mouths “Hum mazdooron ka seena lohe ki deewaar hai, aur yeh humaare hathyaar hain. Yeh humara pet paal bhi sakte hain aur tum jaison ka pet phaad bhi sakte hain”.

“Coolie” was a movie that was slammed by the critics as the worst ever etc. but was lapped up by the paying public. It has attained cult status over the years. Puneet Issar was just a villains’ henchman when he was signed for the movie but the fight sequence in which AB was hurt made Puneet Issar famous. And the smart Manmohan Desai froze the scene in the final cut of the movie and a message appears on screen marking it as the shot when AB was injured. Apparently this was done at Amitabh’s behest. That was the kind of relation that AB shared with Manji (as Mamohan Desai was called by his friends).

One thing was on display in 1982. The level of love that the public had for the actor by the name Amitabh Bachchan. When he lay comatose in a Bombay Hospital, a whole nation prayed for him. There were reports of how people made promises to their respective gods and even fulfilled them when he recovered and restarted work on 7th January 1983. It proved that the struggle that he had on the way to superstardom had borne fruit.

Just another matter that he was a good actor who made the incredible seem normal, like fighting a leopard, tiger and a crocodile at times, with bare hands (he was not the first one to do this onscreen) in “Khoon Pasina” and some other movies. He made it seem normal that a roadside orphan could grow up to be a well to-do do-gooder who is even benevolent on the man who insulted him when he was in his teens- remember “Muqaddar Ka Sikandar”. He mastered rhythm and could move a leg to music without making a fool of himself. He was appreciated when he tried to sing in his tuneless style to begin with and he has sung around 20-30 songs in his career that started in 1969. Of course he has recited poems in “Kabhi Kabhi” and “Silsila”.

He has had a wide range of roles post 2000 when he switched tracks to play characters that are appropriate to his age. He has co-starred with heroes who are his children’s age group. He is one of the actors of that generation who still has movie-makers seek him with specific roles & movies. The other was Rishi Kapoor.

Rishi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan have acted together in a number of movies first time being in “Kabhi Kabhi” 1976. Their first successes also came in the same year-1973. Rishi Kapoor’s “Bobby” and Amitabh Bachchan’s “Zanjeer”. The two were long time friends and the last time they collaborated was in “102 not out” in 2018.

This jodi has been my personal favourite from the first time I saw them. And it is but natural that I present this song of “Coolie”. It shows the two actors’ comic side. The two of them are not eyeing the same girl. Their target is the prize money that the girl’s father Mukri promises for bringing the girl back home. She has this penchant for running away from home and is in cahoots with Sunny (Rishi) who dons a new getup every time he drops her home. Only this time Iqbal has also spotted the girl and decides to drop her home and claim the prize money.

What I like about the song is the various outfits and wigs that AB and Chintu use. The detailing that has gone into draping Chintu with a dhoti that has extra width to cover the stilts when he is trying to compete with the elephant’s height. And also the pronounced jerks that AB and Shoma Anand experience when on the elephant which at first feels that they are having a camel ride.

This song is in the voices of Shailendra Singh and Shabbir Kumar. This movie was the first time AB had a different voice.
All in all a fun song to celebrate the 78th birthday of the superstar of the millennium who has also been given the epithet BigB.

Hullo Atuldom

7th August- remembrance day of Gulshan Kumar Mehta. It seems like just recently that my husband read the news of his demise from the morning papers and asked me who it was? I just rattled out a list of songs that were written by him and he was surprised that almost all the songs that I mentioned he knew he had heard but without knowing who had written it or other details about the song. Today is this Gulshan Kumar Mehta’s 11th anniversary. He is known popularly as Gulshan Bawra.

The name “Baawra” was goven to him by distributor Shantilal Dave who could not believe that the then 19 year old “Baawra” could write such meaningful lyrics. And this moniker “Baawra” stuck.

As I sat to write this post I found a link on youtube that gave me 45 minutes of Gulshan Bawra songs under the title “Best of Gulshan Bawra” and contained the following songs: tumhe-yaad-hogaa; Aapse humko bicchde huye ek zamaana beet gaya; Hamne jo dekhe sapne; Waada karle saajna tere bina main na rahoon; Le chal le chal mere jeewan saathhi; Jeewan ke har mod pe mil jaayenge hamsafar; Tumko mere dil ne pukaara hai; Yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi.

Of the 10 songs in that list I didn’t know only two:- “dil sambhaale sambhalta nahin” and “beete hue din kuch aise hi hain”. But of course all the 10 are present on our blog. And 141 out of the 380 odd songs that he has written, are present in the blog. His first outing in movies was in the 1959 movie “Satta Bazaar” (1959) with the classic ‘tumhe yaad hoga kabhi hum mile the’. His career spanned almost four decades and we have a range of songs to entertain ys from the patriotic Aaj hai do october ka din and ‘mere desh ki dharti’; melodiously romantic ‘chaand ko kya maloom’ and funnily romantic ‘peenewaalon ko peene ka bahana chahiye’. His ‘dukki pe dukki ho’ is as popular as ‘dilbar mere kab tak mujhe’. And I remember having seen him on screen lip syncing ‘deewane hai deewano ko na darr chahiye’ and also enjoying the party in ‘Parivaar’ when Nanda sang ‘aaj hai do october ka din’. He was there on screen in Manoj Kumar directed ‘Upkaar’ as the halwai’s son. His songs have been put to music by Kalyanji Anandji, R D Burman, Shankar Jaikishan. He was awarded the best lyricist Filmfare award for “mere desh ki dharti” and “yaari hai imaan mera yaar meri zindagi” which also topped that years Binaca Geetmala.

Thinking of this lyricist on his anniversary with a song from the 1984 release “Andar Baahar”. 1984 was when I had discovered the new crop of good looking actors Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol etc. They looked good and danced/ acted reasonably well too. So I could request my dad to see this movie. He was also a fan of movies which were of the ‘masala’ genre and had some good songs for added pleasure and relaxation. I could never convince him to see any of the Arty movies, but that is another story.

“Andar Baahar” was a movie produced by Romu Sippy and directed by Raj N. Sippy. It had a cast of Jackie Shroff- Anil Kapoor- Parikshit Sahni- Anita Raaj- Danny. This was Moon Moon Sen’s Hindi debut (one of the reasons my dad agreed to come for the movie, he wanted to see Suchitra Sen’s daughter).

The movie had a very simple storyline:- A cop-n-crook story. The crooks led by Danny crack the safe of a bank, and one of them turns greedy and tries to shoot the others out of his way. The sound gets cop Ajay Sahni (Parikshat Sahni) to the spot and one of the team of crooks runs away with the loot. Danny escapes from prison and threatens the absconding Gulshan Grover of killing his sister if he doesn’t return the loot. Gulshan squeals to the cops and inspector Ajay and his friend Ravi Khanna (Jackie) reach the spot. Only this time, in the operations, inspector Ajay is fatally wounded and now inspector Ravi seeks vengeance. With the permission of the commissioner he brings the wounded crook Raja (Anil Kapoor), who is still in his custody, to help him track Shera (Danny) Gulshan etc and bring the movie to a close. In the process Ravi Khanna finds a friend in Raja who takes Ajay’s place in his life.

Now since there are friends in the movie it is mandatory to have a song where the heroes proclaim their love for each other. This is sung by Shailendra Singh and Suresh Wadkar. R D Burman is the music composer. The song has a stamp of RD all over it:- great opening piece and in between the mukhda and antara. We can also hear the harmonica (popularly called mouth organ) through the song.

Incidentally it also happens to be Suresh Wadkar’s 65th birthday. He has been active since 1977 – ‘Paheli’ and ‘Gaman’ (1978). His voice was different from the reigning voices of that time. He also is trained in classical music which is evident in “Saanjh Dhale Gagan Taley” and his numerous songs which need a clear voice at high pitch. We have 71 songs of his on the blog. We have a lot more songs out there for us to learn the range that he can sing in. For today we shall hear him here in this song and wish him a very Happy Birthday.

N.B.: There is a sad version to this song, video of which I am unable to locate.

Zarina Wahab, born this day in 1959, turns 61 today.

My first introduction to this actress of pronounced and natural underplay, was ‘Chit Chor’ of 1976. Yes, for a brief time, the phrase used for her was ‘Chit Chor Girl’. The debut was impressive and the performance in ‘Chit Chor’ was followed up in 1977 with another superb performance in the film ‘Gharonda’.

In both films, she plays the role of the typical girl next door, who wins your heart with an understatement of her performance as the young coming of age heroine, and her first encounter with love. These two assays, the Geeta of ‘Chit Chor’ and Chhaaya of ‘Gharonda’, quite adequately define for me, the accomplished actress she is.

This song is from the 1995 film ‘Mera Damaad’, almost two decades into her career. The film had a good successful run at the box office, as a comedy of mixed up intents and identities of young hearts seeking their first love.

The film is directed by Partho Ghosh. The lead pair in the film is Zarina Wahab and Farooque Sheikh and the rest of the cast includes Utpal Dutt, Ashok Kumar, Rakesh Bedi, Rakesh Bedi, Prema Narayan, Jankidas, Bhagwan Dada, Tarique, Priyadarshini, Parvin Paul, Abha Mukherjee, Khokha Mukherjee, Brahmachari, Kukku Saigal, Jagannath Prabhu, Balraj, Master Romel Kaul, and Baby Nivedita.

The music director for the film is Salil Chaudhry, and this song is penned by Yogesh.

Wishing Zarina a very happy birthday, with greetings for good healty, peace and many more such celebrations in the coming years.

The lyrics of this song have been sent in by our dear Prakash ji.
