‘Mahabharat’ (1988), the TV Serial produced by B R Chopra and directed by Ravi Chopra was telecast on Doordarshan in 94 episodes from October 2, 1988, to June 24, 1990. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Rahi Masoom Raza. There were 20 main actors and about 60 actors in supporting roles apart from some actors appearing specifically for one or two episodes.

The episodes were telecast every Sunday and I have watched almost all the episodes when these were telecast. Those who have watched the episodes would recall that each episode used to start with the title song, ‘ath shree Mahabharat kathha’ and to end with a theme song of each episode which were rendered by Mahendra Kapoor. But there were many other songs in some episodes which I have almost forgotten except a few, that too, only the context and not the songs. Fortunately, Wikipedia has listed the songs of TV Serial, Mahabharat (1988) numbering 22 songs (including the title song) rendered by eight playback singers which include Mahendra Kapoor, Rajkamal, Anuradha Paudwal, Sadhana Sargam, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Nitin Mukesh, Suresh Wadkar and Roopa Ganguly. The songs were written by Pandit Narendra Sharma apart from songs with traditional lyrics. All the songs were set to music by Rajkamal.

I have listened to a few of these songs in the recent time and have found them to be high class poems written in pure Hindi and woven in Hindustani classical raaga-based melodies. These divine melodies are now almost forgotten and need to be brought to the notice of the readers of our Blog. I, therefore, propose to attempt short write-ups on some of raaga-based songs from TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988) for posting on the Blog over a period of time.

To start with, I present one of 22 songs from TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988), ‘beet gaye din par din beet gaye’ which is composed and rendered by Rajkamal in the words of Pandit Narendra Sharma. It is a background song picturised mainly on Satyavati (Debashree Roy) and Shantanu (Rishab Shukla). Other characters seen in the picturisation are Devavrata/Bhishma (Mukesh Khanna) and Satyavati’s fisherman father, Dashraj (Paramjeet Chima).

This background song appears in the serial in two parts in Episodes 3 and 4. The context for the first part of the song is that while on a hunting trip, King Shantanu is drawn towards a direction from where he is getting the musk-fragrance. After some distance, he sees Satyavati sitting at the shore of Yamuna River waiting for passengers to ferry them in her boat. He is mesmerised by her beauty. He asks her to ferry him across the Yamuna River. During the boat ride, he falls in love with her. He meets her father, Dashraj and asks for her hand. Dashraj puts a condition that his son born out of Satyavati should inherit the throne after him. King Shantanu rejects the condition on the plea that he has already made his son, Devavrata (Bhishma) from his wife, Ganga the crown prince and he cannot accept Dashraj’s condition for marriage. King Shantanu returns dejected and he is distressed. The song is played in the background in which King Shantanu recalls the events leading to meeting Satyavati, ferrying him across Yamuna River and returning after meeting her father.

Watching his father’s condition and after knowing the reasons, Devavrata visits Dashraj’s hut and takes an oath that he had renounced the throne of Hastinapur and he would remain childless by not marrying anyone till his death. After his oath, he brings Satyavati to Hastinapur and gets her married to King Shantanu. The second part of the song appears as a part of King Shantanu’s repentance that for fulfilling his own infatuation of marrying Satyavati, Devavrata has sacrificed not only his right to the throne of Hastinapur but has also taken an oath of celibacy until his death.

Pandit Narendra Sharma has written the song in simple words to reflect King Shantanu’s deep emotional upheaval in losing Satyavati in the first part of the song. In the second part of the song, his lyrics reflect the contrasting situations for Shantanu as well as his son that what he has gained is at the cost of loss to his son.

Rajkamal has composed and rendered the song to create sympathy for Shantanu’s character. At the first instance, he is very firm in rejecting Dashraj’s condition for marriage thus upholding his dignity as a King. But after all, he is also a human being. His character is depicted as a ‘guilty recipient’ of Bhishma’s sacrifices which makes his life remorseful. Note the same words like ‘anmol’, ‘atulneeya’ and ‘atma’ used for contrasting situations in the second part of the song.
