I am presenting the song, ‘binati suniye naathh hamaari’ from Episode-27 of the TV Serial, ‘Mahabharat’ (1988) which is rendered by Sadhana Sargam in the words of Pandit Narendra Sharma. The song is picturised on Channa Ruparel in the role of Rukmini. The background song conveys the essence of a letter which Rukmini writes to Krishna to rescue her from her forced marriage to Shishupal, the prince of Chedi (the present day Bundelkhand). Rukmini had never met Krishna but she had heard the stories of his heroics and bravery. She was devoted to Lord Krishna and had made up her mind that she would marry him only. But her elder brother, Rukmi was more interested in Rukmini marrying Shishupal because of his friendship with Jarasandh, the king of Magadh who wanted him to arrange his sister’s marriage with Shishupal. Also, Shishupal hated Krishna out of jealousy and did not want Rukmini to get married to Krishna.

The forced marriage of Rukmini with Shishupal was a political maneuver initiated by Jarasandh to form his alliance with king of Vidarbha and the King of Chedi to enable Jarasandh to collectively fight with Krishna (Nitish Bhardwaj) in Dwarka to avenge the killing of his son-in-law, Kansa. He thought that the best way to forge an alliance between the king of Vidarbha and the king of Chedi was to arrange marriage of Rukmini, the daughter of the king of Vidarbha to Shishupal, the son of the king of Chedi. Incidentally, Shishupal was the paternal cousin of Krishna as his mother was the sister of Krishna’s father, Vasudev. Shishupal was also the maternal cousin of Pandavas as their mother, Kunti was the sister of Shishupal’s mother. However, Shishupal had a strong hatred for Krishna out of jealousy.

As a part of his political maneuver, King Jarasandh (Rana Jung Bahadur) makes a visit to meet the king of Vidarbha, Bhismaka (Rakesh Bidua) when he puts the proposal of getting Rukmini married to Shishupal which will make both the kingdoms strong. Despite the opposition of Rukman, the younger brother to Rukmi, King of Vidarbha agrees with the proposal of King of Magadh and requests him to formally convey the marriage proposal to Shishupal (Karunakar Pathak) and invite him at the ‘swyamwar’ of Rukmini.

With this broad background, the immediate context of the song under discussion is that Rukmi, the elder brother of Rukmini conveys Rukmini of the decision with a direction that she should select Shishupal only as her husband in the ‘swaymvar’ where the eligible grooms from the royal families have been invited. Rukmini is distressed. She writes a letter to Krishna – a divine ‘love letter’ pleading Lord Krishna, the ruler of the hearts (hridayeshwar) to rescue her from a forced marriage and grant her wish.

The lyrics by Pandit Narendra Sharma is one more example of how a poetic work in pure Hindi makes a graceful love letter giving a feel of a devotional song. Music director, Rajkamal has composed the song in Raag Megh which is also generally used for the soulful expression of the divine love of Radha and Krishna.

satat prateeksha apalak lochan

hey bhavbaadha vipati vimochan
swaagat kaa adhikaar deejiye
sharanaagat hai nayan pujaaree

hridayeshwar hari hriday vihaaree
hridayeshwar hari hriday vihaaree
mor mukut peetaambar-dhaaree
binatee suniye naathh hamaaree
