Shri Hanuman Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Hanuman was celebrated recently on 02 April 2026.
Every year, this occasion reminds me of a long pending post. A post that continues to be deferred and delayed by more than, hold your breath, 8-9 years. Let me explain.

This blog in the past had posts on what we called gang-outs, individuals meeting fellow Atulites etc. Of late, the trend is not much in vogue. So, let’s have one such post today.

2017, after a brief stint in Middle East, I came back to India and happened to visit Delhi for some official meeting. It had been a few years since I had become a “regular” on the blog and the obvious choice to meet a fellow Atulite in Delhi would be Sudhir ji.

The date of the visit was 11 April 2017, again on the auspicious day of Hanuman Jayanti and hence this post. I had some very memorable moments as well as quite a few embarrassing incidents on that one visit only and are detailed below.

1. Self-inflicted misadventure.

This was indeed quite awkward and started even before I reached his house. This was my first visit to a metro city after a long long time and the world had moved. Upon completing the meeting, I came on the street to hop onto a rickshaw or a taxi. Auto rickshaws were not in sight, and no taxi seemed to stop to pick me up. Train, Metro etc. were sort of alien to me and I also thought a taxi would be a better option to reach his house directly.
After some theatrics on the busy street, I was told by some passerby that there were no taxi stands in the vicinity and I had to download an app of Uber etc. to fetch a taxi. I did and since it was taking time, I made the mistake of moving away from where I had booked the taxi in search of some other option.

Soon after I crossed the road and reached a junction, the driver called and naturally it was difficult for him to trace me. Then it was sort of a mini circus in explaining to him, where I was holding fort by raising my hand, describing my attire etc. He politely asked me to stay put, while he maneuvered the traffic and somehow reached me.

Fortunately, he was still in a composed state, and we also had some discussions during our journey to Sudhir ji’s house. I thanked him and apologized for the inconvenience caused in tracing a homo sapien who had sent GPS co-ordinates for pick-up. 😊

2. A heartwarming and blissful experience.

Before, I write about my embarrassing and forgetful experiences of my first meeting with Sudhir ji, I would like to write on the heartwarming and blissful experience I had when I was being taken upstairs to see his collection of books.

Since it was Hanuman Jayanthi, his mother had created a very elegant, stunning and a big pooja decoration and I had the good fortune of offering prayers to God Hanuman, greeting her and accepting prasad. Those were some of my very serene and spiritual moments. There was some sort of unexplained peace and tranquility in my mind in those few moments that I spent with her; an experience that I cannot fully explain in words. I have conveyed these feelings to Sudhir ji more than twice in these last 8-9 years. It was my most satisfying experience in his house, especially for what follows below.

3. The awkward incidents.
Here, I begin my ordeal of the visit. In fact, it started even before I reached his house. Due to the taxi mayhem, I went empty handed to his house which I was visiting for the first time. It may be uncommon these days, but I have grown up with this formality that one carries fruits, gifts etc. at least on the first visit. And if this was not enough, I made a rather rude blunder even when bidding goodbye for the day. More on it later.
I was warmly greeted by Sudhir ji and before we could settle, I was probably asked how I had gotten smitten to this world of old songs. I don’t remember the exact question, but the word” smitten” was used by him. And my first question to him was if Mukesh would make it four digits on the blog. Sudhir ji, like a philosopher had simply said “Let’s see”. 😊

After we settled in, I was offered a big cup of tea. The cup was nothing short of a small mug and this led to a more awkward moment later on while we started the dinner. The tea in gallons and the ever-pinching thought of going back to the hotel room was playing in my mind. Remember, I struggled to get a taxi in broad daylight and now it was already getting dark.

So, this dinner was nothing short of grand Punjabi thali which had no place, appetite or interest in my stomach. There were 3-4 curries and two large rotis. The thali was offered and I thought it would be rude to ask for 70-80% discount on it. I remember not completing the food on the plate and it was very embarrassing, to say the least, to leave food on the plate; uneaten.

I hope that I was forgiven for this unpleasant act. I was indeed asked if the curries were not to my taste, but I could not explain the butterflies in the stomach.

After dinner, Sudhir ji was to visit a couple of neighbours for attending the same pooja I suppose and so he led me upstairs so that I could spend time looking at his book collection while he returned from the neighbours visit. It was while going upstairs that I had met his mother.

I was left alone to absorb my own amazement seeing his collection of books. I was led to several cupboards full of music related books. I knew he would return soon and so I thought I should glance at all the amazing collection rather than pick a couple of them and start reading.

But then curiosity got the better of me for one of the books, and I tried opening one of the cupboards by pulling the small vertical grip bar. In doing so, one of the screws gave away and I almost broke the grip. When he came back this was the first thing I told him, and he understood that it was indeed accidental. Let me digress here as the word “accidental” reminds me of something.

In Ben-Hur (1959), Messala realizes that the fall of loose tiles was accidental, but Judah is still condemned and sent as a galley slave. Nothing of that sort happened to me. 😊

After this episode, we had a voice call with couple of Atulities as some event was being planned on the blog.

Then, as it was quite late into the night and my anxiety about reaching back the hotel room had shot through the roof, Sudhir ji arranged for a taxi and it was time for me to say goodbye.

But with so many unpleasant episodes, something was remaining at the fag end of the visit.

Sudhir ji gifted me the just released book, Melodies, Movies and Memories by Nalin Shah ji as a token of gesture after the visit.

On seeing the book, I immediately said, “I have already bought this book a couple of weeks back” and sort of refused to accept it. My only noble intention was not to have something which I already possess at home. And in refusing the gift straight forward, I had again embarrassed myself and more importantly Sudhir ji. Even today, I wonder what I could have done otherwise at least for this last episode.

Well these were some of my moments and memories that I had with Sudhir ji during my first visit to his house. I procrastinated 8-9 years writing this post and completed it in far less than 80-90 minutes with a lot of haste. If I had scratched by brains, maybe more awkward incidents may have come out, but I had to complete this post and hence the flow and content of the article may not be up to the mark.

For this post, I am introducing a new film to the blog.

Mahabali Hanuman (1980) was directed by Babubhai Mistry and produced by Homi Wadia. The star cast included Rakesh Pandey, Kavita Kiran, Manhar Desai, Anjana, Rajkumar, S.N. Tripathi, et. al.

The composer is Kamalkant and the lyrics are penned by Uday Khanna.

And Hercules, who played the role of Hanuman in this film and a few others. Here is a link to his acting career.

This post was delayed for more than 8-9 years and I have finally managed to get the monkey off my back but then Lord Hanuman continues to reside in me.
Jai Shri Hanuman!
