SHANKAR-JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s…..Song No. 10…Last song of the series
————————————————————————
We have come to the end of this series.

Shankar-Jaikishen gave us tremendous pleasure by providing some exceptional melodies and iconic songs during the decade of 1950s. All in all, Hindi film music could be considered to be at its zenith during 1950s. Masters like Naushad, C.Ramchandra, Shankar Jaikishan, Hemant Kumar, Ravi, Roshan, Chitragupta and many more composers regaled us with their best songs during this decade. The dream run of the decade of 50s ended like all dreams and the HFM started going downwards from then onwards. HF M Somehow kept up thefreshness and sweetness of their melodies till the latter half of the 60s. With the changing pattern of the public taste and the sociological changes in the Indian societies, thestress became more on instant satiation rather than lasting satisfaction. This led to songs which became popular for a few months and were then forgotten after that. The period of remaining in public memory went on reducing and today’s songs hardly stay in memory for a month or so ( exceptions excepted).

“Kahin Aur Chal”(1968) was one movie which few people have seen because this movie was withdrawn after one show in one movie hall by its maker. That is how it was Tolaram Jalani, the maker of this movie, who was not interested in releasing the movie and was more interested in balancing his books for income tax purposes by showing this movie as a loss making venture for him.

SHANKAR- JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s…Song No. 8
———————————————-

Should an actor working as a Hero be necessarily good looking ? In India, yes ! If one sees the list of heroes from 1931 till recent time, one will find that on 99% of the occasions, the Heroes were handsome, good looking, tall and with good physique- irrespective of whether they could act or not. Not that there were no heroes who were ordinary looking, but by and large they were exceptions or they were the producers or directors themselves ( like Kishore Sahu ) or their sons etc. The Indian audience had a mind set that a film Hero must be good looking and the Heroine must be beautiful-preferably.

SHANKAR-JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s…Song No. 6
———————————————
The mid 50s was a period when one could see the deep impact of the Nehruvian socialism on the film that were made. Great film makers like Mehboob Khan, B R Chopra and Raj Kapoor tried to support Nehru and Gandhian philosophies through their films. Being great artists, they combine socialism with entertainment in a skillful way. Films like Naya Daur, Mother India, Jagte Raho, Phir subah hogi, Do bigha Zameen,Boot polish,Ab dilli door nahin etc and later on films like Son of India and Naya Kanoon etc clearly indicated Socialism.

SHANKAR-JAIKISHEN IN THE 50s….Song No 4
————————————————

After having lost the melody and sweetness in their music post Junglee and after an attempt to redeem their prestige with a few sporadic melodies, Shankar Jaikishan came closest to their earlier magic with Teesri Kasam-66. Mukesh was just superb. Except for their songs made for Shammi Kapoor films, rest of their songs failed miserably. There was a talk in the industry about their differences and decline. This of course did not bother them much.
