Bansi ki madhur dhun se mere bhaagya jagaa de

Posted on: August 21, 2011

Praying to the Almighty to take care of one’s problems is an old practice in Hindi movies dating back to 1940s. Which was the first movie where a lady was shown singing a prayer in front of a God’s idol in Hindi movies ? Perhaps the knowledgeable readers may have some idea.

Here is a song which shows a lady praying in front of the idol of Lord Krishna and exhorting Him to turn the fortunes of her family around. The other members of the family are also around. The male head of the family asks another relative to join them in the prayer, but the man, playing a forerunner of Angry young man, declines to join in the prayer, stating that he seen no reason to join them in praying for “their” God.

This song is sung by Amirbai Karnataki. Wali Sahab is the lyricist. Music is composed by Shyam Sundar.

Who is the lady on whom this song is picturised ? Could it be Amirnbai Karnataki herself ? I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on this matter.

PS-She is Durga Khote, as pointed out by Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh and others. I thought I could identify her. But I was unable to identify her when she was much younger. 😀

Bansi ki madhur
Bansi ki madhur dhun se mere bhaagya jagaa de

bigdi huyi armaanon ki hasti ko bachaa de
bujhti huyi aashaaon ke deepak ko jalaa de
toofaan se bachaa ke hamen

Atul ji,
The actress in the above song is DURGA KHOTE.
VILLAGE GIRL (1945),produced by Ramanik Production was a very entertaining movie and was a good grosser.Directed by K.Amarnath,its cast was-Noor Jehan,M.Nazir,Jagadish Sethi,Durga Khote,Rama Shukul,Anant Marathe,Rajkumari Shukla,Rajkumari Kapoor,Bikram Kapoor,F.M.Khan etc.
The story was that Jaani (M.Nazir) is a vagabond and his mother suffers due to his misdeeds.Once he goes to neighbouring village and meets Bibbo(Noor Jehan). They fall in love. One Hari(Jagdish Sethi) is also loving
her.He gives a loan to her father.Jaani wants to reform and starts doing kheti, but Hari gets him arrested for a theft and murder.Jaani is freed after Bibbo helps to find the murderer.Jaani goes and joins Army, when he comes back Bibbo is about to marry Hari.It is then proved that Hari has impregnated another girl and then everything is fine with Bibbo Marrying Jaani.
The film was so successful, that after migrating to Pakistan,M.Nazir remade the film in Punjabi titled ” Pherey ” in 1949.This too was successful and became the first Silver jubilee film of Pakistan.

Hi Atul,

It was wonderful to listen to such an old Bhajan. The lady singing appears to me to be Durga Khote…whom we have seen in mother roles in a lot of movies. She was basically a Marathi actress. I am going by the charming, dimpled face in the video… almost certainly it appears to be Durga Khote…maybe our other friends can confirm.
