1960s, the golden era of Bollywood filmy songs saw hundreds of memorable songs. They drew from folk music, theatre etc. The lyrics were often shayari.
Here is a song where the lyrics and music was totally drawn from real down to earth life in UP/Bihar. In this song, people gather around a village gawaiyya, and the song being sung talks about what a small bird ( muniya) does to the stuffs of halvayi, bajaj, and panwaadi. The song is accompanied by fast paced music on harmonium and dholak that rises to a crescendo towards the end of the stanzas as well as towards the end of the song.
Raj Kapoor is there in this song, but only as a listener ( along with Waheeda Rahman). That is why this song is not sung by Mukesh, but by Manna Dey. Here Manna Dey gets to sing once again for a bit actor ( as tended to happen with him most of the time), but this time it is not a trivial comedy song, but a great folk song. I have come to realise that Manna Dey sang some of the most memorable songs of that era despite getting very few assignments to sing in movies.
PS-The actor lip syncing this song is Krishn Dhawan. i thank Mr Sadanand Kamath for this information.
Great great lyrics by Shailendra. The words are totally rustic as used by village folk. Only a very gifted lyricist could think of such lyrics. And how well Shankar Jaikishan have captured the mood of the song. If one pauses to think, few people can tell what is the meaning of this song. And in fact, there is no profound or even trivial meaning in this song. But it does not seem to matter. The folk music based tune and inspired singing by Manna Dey ensured that this song has become an evergreen song and a perennial favourite with listeners of all backgrounds and generations.
