Kyun pheri nazar dekho to idhar
Posted on: September 8, 2008
This song is a very special song. Not only is it the oldest song (1948) posted in this blog so far , this is one song that very few people may have heard. This song was composed for the movie “Anokhi Ada” (1948). As many bollywood music fans may be aware, this movie was a musical blockbuster full of memorable songs.
This particular song was excluded from the movie at the editing stage. As a result, this song died an untimely death, and people forgot all about it.
I have heard this song many times, and it is one song that I can never get tired of no matter how many times I listen to it. I am sure that this song would have become popular had it been included in the movie. In fact, I feel that it was perhaps the best song composed for this movie.
Mukesh was a budding singer in 1948. One can imagine what a setback it could be for a budding singer if a song sung by him gets excluded from the movie and therefore from the records that were manufactured. This could finish off careers. I am so pleased that Mukesh managed to have a long and illustrious career as a playback singer.
It is my proud privilege to present this rare song of Mukesh for the listening pleasure of the readers of this blog. Enjoy.
song- kyun pheri nazar (Anokhi Ada) (1948) Singer-Mukesh, Lyrics-Anjum Pilibhiti, MD-Naushad
Lyrics
kyun pheri nazar
kyun pheri nazar
dekho to idhar
dekho to idhar
dhaaon na sitam
pahle pahle
kyun pheri nazar
dikhlaake jhalak dil cheen liya
dikhlaake jhalak dil cheen liya
aur dil ki bajaai dard diya
aur dil ki bajaai dard diya
milte hi nazar kya khoob kiya
milte hi nazar kya khoob kiya
tumne ye karam

kyun pheri nazar
kyun pheri nazar
dekho to idhar
dekho to idhar
dhaaon na sitam
pahle pahle
kyun pheri nazar
dil leke sataana theek nahin
dil leke sataana theek nahin
nazron se giraana theek nahin
nazron se giraana theek nahin
duniyaa e mohabbat mein humne
duniyaa e mohabbat mein humne
rakkha hai kadam pahle pahle
kyun pheri nazar
kyun pheri nazar
kyun pheri nazar
dekho to idhar
dekho to idhar
dhaao na sitam

Dear Atul,
This song is neither listed under ‘Andaaz’ (1949) nor under ‘Anokhi Adaa’ (1948) in http://www.myswar.com where it is listed as NFS as also in . in http://www.singermukesh.com. I do not have access to HFGK/Mukesh Geet Kosh.
We have to take a considered view based on some authentic sources whether this song should be tagged under ‘Andaaz’ (1949) or under ‘NFS’.

Sadanand ji, friends,
Mukesh Geet Kosh lists this song as a non film song.
Lyricist is identified as Anjum Pilibhiti, and Naushad is the music director.

Atul ji,
Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji has confirmed today that this song ” Kyun pheri nazar”- Mukesh, Record no. N-88034 was recorded for film ANOKHI ADA-1948.( and NOT for Andaz-49)
The entry in Mukesh geet kosh about it being a NFS was a wrong entry, according to him.
Kindly correct the credits of the song. accordingly.

I have a couple of observations to make in regard to this song which was purported to be composed for ‘Anokhi Ada’ (1948) but got excluded/deleted from the film.
1. There could be two possibilities –
(i) the song was composed for the film but was not picturised. If it so, in my view, the song does not belong to the film and should be tagged as ‘NFS’.
(ii) the song was composed and picturised but got excluded from the film either at the time of editing or after the release of the film. If it is so, in my view, the song belong to the film and it should be tagged as such.
2. Another way of deciding as to whether this song was from the film or NFS is to see the 78 RPM record of the song. If the name of the film is not mentioned on the record, obviously, HMV has regarded this song as NFS.
The HMV records issued for ‘Anokhi Ada’ (1948) was in N.35000 series. for example, I have 78 RPM records for the songs ‘ye pyaar ki baatein; and ‘kaahe jiyaa dole’ for which the record No. is N.35416 and for songs ‘kyun yaad aa rahen hain’ and ‘dil ka lagaa kar hamne’ have record No. N.35417. But HMV had issued the song under discussion bearing record No. N. 88034. As far as I know, those days, HMV had been issuing NFS records mainly under N.88000 series. I have some other NFS records under N.88000 series.
In my view, it would be a better criterion for deciding as to whether a song is filmy or non-filmy based on how the record companies have treated such exceptional songs.

Kamath ji,
Your comments are very logical.
I can add one more reason to your list..
3. If after recording a song specially for a film,it is decided not to use it in the film (before or after picturisation),due to ANY reason whatsoever…I think the song will belong to the film.
This is the part of the reply I got from Shri Harish Raghuvanshi ji,to my query about this…
“………….Kyoon pheri nazar….Mukesh N 88034 Mehboob Production Anjum
Pilibhiti Naushad
Recorded for Anokhi Ada 1948 Not used in the film -It is not non filmi song
===========================================================
I have confirmed with Naushad ji in Ahmedabad at Mr Ambrish Parikh’s
residence about 25 years back
Harish 3-7-2014 ”
We really do not know if it was picturised or not.
However if you see the circumstances, like written by Anjum Pilibhiti, music by Naushad and sung by Mukesh in almost same fashion like other songs of that film, one can conclude that it was Anokhi Ada song.
Secondly,Anjum and Naushad getting a NFS from Mukesh in the days when Naushad was in high demand for films and very busy, seems unlikely.( I do not know of any NFS involving Naushad.)
Thirdly,Naushad himself has clarified this matter.

Points well noted.
But the fact that HMV issued all songs from this film under N.35000 series and issued the song under discussion in N.88000 series indicates that HMV treated this song as ‘not from the film’.

Kamath ji,
I do not think that HMV,at the time of recording the song, would have known that it was not going to be included in the film. The decision of not taking this song in the film must have been taken only after recording the song (pictured or not pictured not known),by the MD or the Producer or someone else.
Further, the record number may be just a coincidence and there may not be any series for NFS,as you think.

I have been researching into the development of the 3-minute recorded Hindi film music.
I had heard this song of Mukesh as a young boy in the 1950s and was very fond of it. For the last twenty odd years I have been trying to locate it. I am much thankful to you that I can hear ut again.
But I have small questions. I think thath the song may not be from Andaz (1949); it could be from Anokhi Ada (1948). Also (in that csae) the lyricist may not be Majrooh; it could be Anjum Pheelbiti.
Did you actually get the song from labelled source/ (like an old -fashioned 78 rpm’45 rpm/LP) record?
Also, the musical composition (particularly thr orchestral arrangement) of the song do not sound typical of the Naushad of Andaz, although a part of the duggi-tabla background play does sound a bit like that in “Jhoom Jhoom Ke Nacho Aa” song in Andaz.
Finally it is very strange indeed that such a beautiful song was not included (not picturised, obviously; or, deleted after picturisation) in the film.
Could you clarifyabout the film and the lyricist?

I am a fan of Late Naushad Sahib and can recognize his music as soon as I hear it. This song reflects his music and if you listen very closely, you will get the “glimpse” of couple of more songs from film Andaz I do not remember how many times Ihave watched this film.

There is a significant body of opinion on the internet, suggesting that the cancelled/unreleased Mukesh-Naushad song, “Kyun Pheri Nazar Dekho To Idhar” which people usually tend to associate with Andaaz (1949), was, in fact, meant for Anokhi Ada.
It was initially recorded for the film Anokhi Ada but not included (edited out). Later, it was released as a Non-Film song.
As it was an orphan Mukesh-Naushad number from the late ’40s, it was easy to jump to the conclusion that it belonged to Andaaz. Thus, popular opinion gradually built around this premise.
I wonder what our in-house experts have to say about this.
A possible clue could lie in the identity of the lyricist, I believe. As Andaaz songs were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri, while Anokhi Ada had none of Majrooh in it (it was mostly Shakeel Badayuni and some Anjum Pilibhiti), if we could determine who wrote this song, we shall effectively unravel which film it was intended for.
