This song is one of those memorable and immortal songs that the trio of Madan Mohan, Lata and Raja Mehdi Ali Khan created in 1960s. Most such songs were favoured by class audience, and the masses kept away. But here was a classy song that influenced even the masses. This song featured in Binaca geetmala final of 1964 (at 15th position).
The haunting voice and music in this song easily makes it a hall of famer among songs of this genre. Three more generations have sprung up from the time this song was composed, and the magic of this song still mesmerises its listeners. This is one of those songs that has become timeless.

Song: Jo humne dastaan apni sunayi aap kyon roye (Woh kaun thi ) (1964 ) Singer-Lata, lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD- Madan Mohan
Lyrics
jo hamne daastaan apni sunaayi, aap kyun roye
jo hamne daastaan apni sunaayi, aap kyun roye
tabaahi to hamaare dil pe aayi, aap kyun roye
hamaaraa dard-e-gham hai ye, ise kyun aap sahte hain
ye kyun aansoo hamaare, aapki aankhon se bahte hain
ghamon ki aag hamne khud lagaayi, aap kyun roye
jo hamne daastaan apni sunaayi, aap kyun roye
bahut roye magar ab aapki khaatir na royenge
na apnaa chain khokar aapkaa ham chain khoyenge
kayaamat aapke ashkon ne dhaayi, aap kyun roye
jo hamne daastaan apni sunaayi, aap kyun roye
na ye aansoo ruke to dekhiye, phir ham bhi ro denge
ham apne aansuon mein chaand taaron ko dubo denge
fanaa ho jaayegi saari khudaai, aap kyun roye
jo hamne daastaan apni sunaayi, aap kyun roye

[…] Yes, this song is from “Wo Kaun Thi” (1964) which is known for such immortal songs as Jo humne dastaan apni sunaayi aap kyun roye , Lag ja gale ke phir ye haseen raat ho na ho and Naina barse rimjhim rimjhim- all of them already […]

The link embedded for this song has a lot of additional music beats added to it. Perhaps this link is better ?

This is the very best of Madan Mohan’s, all three lata solos are top class as also the Asha solo “Shokh nazar ki bijliyaan”. Another thing is the picturization of this song with views in the mirrors is very innovative, and sadhna never looked so beautiful as she did in this film.
Also notable is there are two duets one is rafi-asha and other is lata-mahendra. The rift between lata and Rafi (Over Royalty issue) is the cause of this too. No Suman K and no Talat here, as with”jahan Ara” songs. As the year of release is same, it would be interesting to see if songs of “Jahan Ara” were recorded first prior to “Woh Kaun Thi” and did madan mohan ever use Suman K after “Baad Muddat ke yeh ghadi”.
Regards.

Thanks for posting this song, Atul. It was one of my farmaish songs (I see that you have posted some other of my farmaishes also – thanks).
I really think Lata put in extra effort for Madan Mohan. He was her favourite composer (she admitted as much in an interview). Another way of saying this could be that Madan Mohan managed to get the best out of Lata. More than anyone else.
Whatever it is, the combination was divine.
