This song is a very well known song and a song that has the ability to move its listeners. Of course I am talking about the audio. I had not seen the picturisation till now. Now that I have seen the picturuisation, it turns out that the picturisation is quite moving too.
Having said that, I notice that the song was sung by a grown up singer, but it is picturised on a minor girl. Those days, female singers used to sing for kids, instead of kids giving playback singing for kids. Listening to such a well sung song with such sophisticated lyrics and then finding that this song is picturised on a kid left me with mixed feelings. I do not think kids can be expected to sing such sophisticated songs. May be it is the people involved in picturisation of the song who should have taken more care.
Then I realised that this song has another version, viz the duet sung by Rafi and Lata, and this song is picturised properly viz on grown ups. This song is really outstanding, singing wise as well as picturisation wise.
This duet is the one that Raja had in mind when he gave his farmaish for this song. So here is this song, in both versions.

I think this is one of the best lorry song that I or rather all of us had heard. Those days starting from music director,lyricist, and playback singers are the best example of bollywood music. I am a Mohd Rafi fan but i never heard this song till couple of months back, i thought “main gaun tum so jao” was one of the best lorry song sung by Rafi.. but after listening this song.. i think i am wrong.. this is the best lorry song ever..

You mean lori song. Lorry song ( truck song) to me is a different genre of song altogether. 😉
Welcome to this blog, Ranvir. Yes, I agree that it is a very fine song, though it is a sad song too. I feel that lori songs should not be sad, if possible. That way, “nanhi kali sone chali” is a very good lori song too, in my opinion.

The song picturised on the young girl is more emphasized on the pain that the innocent kids are going through, and the same has been captured in the girls expressions..specially in the lyrics hai Bujha Bujha sa dil, where she is taking the food plate in her hand which is later eaten by a dog…. If you see the movie it would connect even better with the expression of the girl…
both songs have been picturised well and have done justice to the lyrics with the expressions

I was just searching for the lyrics of this song when I stubled upon your blog. I saw this movie couple of days ago, was a very tragic movie. But this song is one of the most poignant melody ever composed. Anupama’s kuch dil ne kaha and this one probably can make tears roll down the eyes very easily….just make the moments very nostalgic. Thanks for sharing this melody thru your blog.

this song worth listening in rafi voice only. no impact in lata rendition. Plain and boring. Just listen the rafi solo, out of this world.

They should have had a Rafi solo instead of Lata. Lata’s voice in the song is too sharp to suit a lullaby. The Geeta Dutt lullaby that you posted earlier was soothing and really suits a lullaby.

In my view, Rafi solo is the best among the three versions of this song. Rafi sang in a slow pace in low pitch with the interlude of beautiful symphony type orchestration. Rafi version is the longest of the three.

The Rafi solo may have been used as a theme/background song, because no other character/situation, except if it were to be sung by Jayant.

Having heard the two videos of film version available and the Rafi sahab’s solo, of which only audio is available, I can conclude that two solo versions of Lata and Rafi were recorded. These solo recordings were used in the movie in tandom to create the duet on screen. Even then both the brother and sister are singing it separately. The difference is clear in the echo sound which is there is Rafi Sahab’s vocal.
Truly, the Rafi sahab’s solo is out of this world. The words are the same as Lata solo, but the rendition is so much more beyond, beginning of each stanza and the end of the song.

“Beti bete” is also one of those films where all the songs are Rafi songs. One multiple version (above song),one duet with Asha, one duet with Suman-Kalyanpure and the rest five are solos by Mohammed Rafi.
Its in unlikely that the song posted here was recorded as duet. LP records should have only two solos by Lata and Rafi. This should be checked from the geet kosh.

During the making of the film ‘Beti Bete’ (1964), Lata – Rafi tip over the royalty issue was still in vogue. So, it is unlikely that the song under discussion was recorded as a duet song of Lata and Rafi.
In the LP of the film’s songs, (Angel Record No.3AE 1033), the song is presented as solo by Lata and Rafi separately.

This is really a moving song. Simple but touching lyrics.
For example,
kaun aayegaa idhar, kiski raah dekhen ham
jinki aahten suni, jaane kiske the kadam
Actually, to be honest, I had the Rafi-Lata version of this song when I put my farmaish to you but this Lata version also is very good. Rafi of course, in the duet version, is heavenly.
