Manna Dey was an outsider as far as singing mainstream songs were concerned. Unlike other singers, he was reduced to singing unusual songs viz songs for lesser characters in the movie, viz comedian etc. Difficult songs, unlikely to get popular with lay public viz semi classical songs were also given to him to sing. In fact, many of such semi classical songs were included in the movies to provide comic relief.
Despite working against such heavy odds, Manna Dey did well within the constraints. Many of the so called comic relief songs went on to become memorable and became classics.
In case he somehow managed to get a song to sing for the hero, it would be a comedy/ drunk song or something similar. The song under discussion viz “Jhanak jhanak tori baaje payaliya” was supposed to be there as a comic relief, if I am not mistaken. But to the credit of Manna Dey, he would sing his song to the best of his ability and the result was a song that went on to become a Manna Dey classic.

Wonderful song. Thanks, Atul.
Btw, this song in the movie is when the heroine (Mala Sinha) rejects him for the other hero (Jeetendra).
He then goes to the kothewaali and gets drunk, trying to drown his sorrows. That is this scene.
I don’t know whether you have seen this movie. If not, you should definitely see it. I liked it a lot.

Yes…his explanation is not tallying with particular song by Manna Dey saab/in Rajkumar’s lip,the song all TIME HIT and memorable and a classic . thanks for sargam by Atul ji.

Thanks for the lyrics, Atul! However, I have a question: the line “baanvari ras pe kar de jaadoo” sounds like “bhaav-minat se kar de jaadoo” every time I listen to it. Can you confirm this?

I listened to the song again, and the word does sound something like “bhaanwri ras” or something like that. One thing is sure that the word must be meaningful. Any idea what is the meaning of the word “bhaav minat” ?

Something like “adaa” of the tawaifs, maybe? The dance moves, the pseudo-coyness, and all that? I’m not that well-versed in Hindi myself.

caesar and atul I am also a big admirer and fan of manna dey. also I feel sorry for being very late.well what I could listen and makeout (sounds logical to me at least) the words go as “BHAAV NIRAKHTE(gazing/looking at) KAR DE JADOO”……..! ……..confirm.

Atul, your explanation clears up a whole lot. I have wondered how Raaj Kumar’s musical abilities were not impaired when his gait was. The answer is of course, Manna Dey sang to the best of his ability when he got the opportunity. This explains the incongruence here.The sitar bit at the end is superb.

Dear Atul, thanks for the posting. The first 2 stanzas are perfect. A a few corrections in the 3rd stanza.
1. it is ‘indradhanush Kaa’ and not ‘indradhanush saa’
2. it should be ‘bhaav-nirat se’ instead of ‘baanvari ras pe’
3. The complete Sargam in the 3rd stanza is

Manna Dey numbers are a treat to listen to. According to my song details.. the song is based on Raag Darbari Kaanada. Also..this tune recently inspired the song Ras Ke Bhare Tore Nain from Satyagraha (2013) [I had mentioned this in an email to Atulites long back].

Our great Manna Dey did not get many opportunities of singing for main stream actors as his voice did not fit most of them . You rightly said that he used to lend voice to the aged actors like Balraj Sahni { Tu Pyar Ka Saagar Hai ( Seema ) , O Meri Zohrazabeen ( Waqt ) , Tujhe Suraj Kahun Ya Chanda ( Ek Phool Do Maali ) } or Raajkumar ( Jhanak Jhanak Tori Baaje Paayaliya ) or comedians like Agha { Gori Teri Baanki ( A’ B ‘ Grade film Shailesh Kumar as the main hero ) and Mehmood ( Songs of Ziddi ) . He was given a number of opportunities to sing for Raj Kapoor by Shankar Jaikishan duo in films like Chori Chori ,Shree 420 and Teesri Kasam for lesser known actor Kishan Dhawan . But all his songs have become iconic . He used be the BEST SINGER OF BOLLYWOOD till date .
But Rafi Sahib the BEST PLAYBACK SINGER OF BOLLYWOOD till date . Who can forget his masterpiece ‘ Laaga Chunari Mein Daag ‘ ( Dil Hi To Hai ) picturized on Raj Kapoor . Once Rafi Sahib said , ” When alone , I use to listen to Manna’s songs , not mine ” . Once Anil Biswas commented , ” Manna can sing any song which any other singer can sing but the songs which Manna sang could not be sung by other artists ” . Hats off to Great Mannada .
