Kabhi aar kabhi paar laaga teere nazar

“Aar Paar” was one movie that launched O P Nayyar as a music director and he ruled the roost as a music director for the next few years, during which he introduced new kind of music than what was being composed till then.
The songs of “Aar Paar” were quite popular. The title song “kabhi aar kabhi paar” was sung by Shamshad Begum and this song stood 12th in the Binaca geetmala final of 1954.
Picturisation of this song is quite cute. This song is sung by a labourer woman carrying construction material on her head and she is singing this song while watching the hero and the heroine. Three urchins ( one boy and two girls) shake a leg or two which annoys the heroine no end, especially because they insist on dancing near her non starter car, even climbing on it in the process. She chases the urchins away repeatedly but the urchins, like bad coins come back again and again towards her.
Even the hero ( later to be known for playing tragic roles) is enjoying the discomfiture of the lady. He offers to inspect and repair her car, but ends up inspecting her for much of the time. Finally he manages to get the car started, of course by pushing it from behind, and he is enthusiastically “assisted” in pushing the car by the urchins, who are in reality riding on it, with all the pushing being done by the hero.
And for those who love trivias, look at the boy closely. It is none other than Jagdeep. 😉 Yes, the boy shaking his waist in this song ( and his thumka is of a good standard) is the same person who was later known for playing comedy roles in movies like Sholay ( Soorma Bhopali) and who is the father of Javed and Naved Jaafrey (of “boogie woogie” TV serial fame).
It was pointed out by Sudhir ji that one needed to look closely at the female labourer lip syncing the song too. He points out that she is none other than Kumkum, and this song in fact is her debut appearance in a Hindi movie song. This was her debut movie too. Indeed, that makes this song a very significant song from trivia buffs’ point of view. Now I will remember that the title song of “Aar Paar” (1954) was the first song picturised on Kumkum.

Lyrics
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
sainyaa ghaayal kiyaa re toone meraa jigar
kitna sambhala bairi do naino mein kho gaya
kitna sambhala bairi do naino mein kho gaya
dekhti rah gayi main to jiya tera ho gaya
dekhti rah gayi main to jiya tera ho gaya
sar pe mila ye jeewan bhar ka maara aisa teer nazar ka
sar pe mila ye jeewan bhar ka maara aisa teer nazar ka
loota chain karaar
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
sainyaa ghaayal kiyaa re toone moraa jigar
pahle milan mein ye to duniyaa ki reet hai
pahle milan mein ye to duniyaa ki reet hai
baat mein gussaa lekin dil hi dil mein preet hai
baat mein gussaa lekin dil hi dil mein preet hai
man hi man mein laddoo phooten
nainon me phuljhadiyaan chhooten
man hi man mein laddoo phooten
nainon me phuljhadiyaan chhooten
honthon par taqaraar
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
sainyaa ghaayal kiyaa re toone moraa jigar
marzi tihaari chahe man mein basaao ji
marzi tihaari chahe man mein basaao ji
pyaar se dekho chhahe aankhon se giraaoji
pyaar se dekho chhahe aankhon se giraaoji
dil se dil takraa gaye ab to
chot jigar par kha gaye ab to
dil se dil takraa gaye ab to
chot jigar par kha gaye ab to
ab to ho gaya pyaar
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
kabhi aar kabhi paar laagaa teer-e-nazar
sainyaa ghaayal kiyaa re tu ne moraa jigar
kabhi aar kabhi paar

Kumkum’s debut appearance was in the film “Sheesha” in 1952, the main actress in that film was Nargis.

Atul ji,
You suggest to us for looking closely at the urchin boy (Jagdeep), but did not ask to pay attention to the labourer lady who is singing the song. 🙂
This song is a very important landmark for this labourer lady. She is the famous actress Kum Kum. This solo song is the debut appearance of Kum Kum in the world of Hindi films.
