#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # # Dil Ka Raaja -1972#
—————————————
Today’s song is from the ‘1972’ movie ‘Dil Ka Raaja’.
This is another movie which I came across while presenting the ‘missing movies of 1972’ on the blog. Though this movie made its debut on the blog way back on 14.10.2014, only one song from this movie has been posted on the blog. I do not remember to have listened to other songs from this movie. That is the reason for this post where today we will enjoy the second song from this movie.
Music for this movie is also composed by R.D. Burman.
‘Dil Ka Raaja-1972’ was directed by P. Madhwan for ‘Nadiadwala Associates, Bombay’. It was produced by A.A. Nadiadwala.
It had Raj Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Ajit, Bindu, Jagdeep, Indrani Mukherjee, Randhir, Meena T., Sheikh, Surendra Rahi, Manjeet, Omkar, Pandit Iqbal, Jankidas, Uma Dutt, Rajesh, Maqbool, Master Anil, Master Ripal, and Waheeda Rehman (in special appearance).
Story and screenplay of this movie was written by Balamurugan. Dialogues of this movie were written by Kaushal Bharti.
Editing of this movie was done by Babubhai Thakkar.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 29.11.1972.
As I mentioned above one song from this movie has been posted on the blog earlier and that was presented by Shri Satyajit Rajurkar on the blog.
In his post (which is his passionate post about Rafi Saab) he had also mentioned about the story of this movie which I am reproducing below from his post.
This movie is about two brothers who try to retrieve the lost glory of their “king” father through hard work and sincerity. After generously donating all the wealth accumulated by three generations of his family, Ramnagar-based Raja Vichitra Singh (Raaj Kumar), faces humiliation at the hands of Thakur Gajendra Singh (Ajit) when he is unable to pay a dowry for his sister, Gauri (Indrani Mukherjee). He does fulfill his promise by mortgaging his mansion, Raghupathi Bhavan, but the shock kills his wife, Lakshmi (Waheeda Rehman). Humiliated, with no one coming forward to help him, he leaves Ramnagar, along with his three children, Raja (Raaj Kumar), Bajrang (Jagdedep), and Vijaya (Meena T) and re-locates to Bombay, hoping to accumulate Three Lakh Rupees, so that he can get the Bhavan back as well as restore his honour. The rest of the story is about how Vichitra Singh, now a tonga driver and his children, who end up working as a coolies and labourers, try and save the money to enable them to get the mansion back.
The movie is a remake of the A Nageshwar Rao starrer “Dharma Daata” (1970).
‘Dil Ka Raaja’ had five songs written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed to music by Rahul Dev Burman.
Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhonsle and Manna Dey had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
Here is the list of songs of this movie.

05 | Jaao jaao tum bhi jaao, samajhte kya ho | Mohd Rafi | 14.10.2014 |
Today’s song is sung by Rafi Saab and Asha Bhonsle and on screen it is performed by two pairs i.e. Raj Kumar – Leena Chandavarkar, and Jagdeep – Bindu. (Rajkumar and Jagdeep play brothers in this movie).
This is a nice entertaining song sung by Rafi Saab and Asha Bhonsle. I hope readers will enjoy listening and watching this song.
Let us now enjoy today’s song …

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2012-2022) – Song No. 10
————————————————————————————–
Today’s song is from the movie ‘Nainaa-1973’.
One song from this movie was posted on the blog ten years back on this day. In all, five songs were discussed on this day ten years ago on 19 January 2012.
Here is the list.
Song | Movie title(Year) | Remarks |
---|---|---|
Muhabbat mein aise zamaane bhi aaye | Sagaai(1951) | All Songs covered |
Ye samaa ye khushi kuchh bolo jee bolo jee | Ghar Ghar Ki Baat(1959) | All Songs covered |
Saaraa mora kajraa chhudaayaa toone | Do Dil(1965) | All Songs covered |
Hone lagi hai raat jawaan jaagte raho | Nainaa(1972) | 5 of 7 Songs posted |
Koyi ye kaise bataaye ke wo tanha kyun hai | Arth(1982) | 3 of 5 Songs posted |
From the above table we can see that out of the five movies presented on the blog on 19.01.2012, three movies viz. ‘Sagaai-1951’, ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Baat-1959’ and ‘Do Dil-1965’ have already been Yippeeee’ed on the blog.
That leaves us two movies i.e., ‘Nainaa-1973’ and ‘Arth-1982’ from which songs can be discussed today.
I am presenting a song from ‘Nainaa-1973’ for which the lyrics were sent by our dear Prakash ji.
‘Nainaa-1973’ was directed by Kanak Mishra for ‘Shakti International, Bombay’. It had Shashi Kapoor, Moushumi Chatterjee, Rahman, Akashdeep, David, Padma Khanna, Sanjana, Shaukat Kaifi, Praveen Pal, Madhumati, Jagirdar, Naagar, Samson, Feroza, Teerath, Polsan, Dhanraj, Sitaram, Krishna Kumar, Radheshyam, Jugnu and others.
This movie introduced Darpan and Siddharth. Farida Jalal, A.K. Hangal, and Rajshree have special appearance in this movie.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.09.1973.
This movie had seven songs written by Hasrat Jaipuri (five songs), Kaifi Azmi and Indeewar (one song each).
Music for this movie was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.
Here is the list of songs this movie had as mentioned in HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980).

---|---|---|---|
01 | Hone lagi hai raat jawaan, jaagte raho | Asha Bhonsle | 19.01.2012 |
02 | Jaane mujhe toone ye kyaa cheez pilaa dee | Kishore Kumar, Sharda | Being discussed today |
03 | Hamko to jaan se pyaari hai tumhaari aankhen | Mohd Rafi | 31.03.2009 |
04 | Nazar jab utthhaayi …mujhe toone maar daalaa | Mohd Rafi | 25.05.2009 |
05 | Albele sanam tu laaya hai kahaan | Sharda | 22.05.2009 |
06 | Man panchhi kahin door chal door chal | Sharda | 25.05.2019 |
07 | Mere dil door bahut door kahin bhi le chal | Mohd Rafi |
Out of the above list, I am aware of two songs ‘hamko to jaan se pyaari hai tumhaari aankhen’ and ‘albele sanam tu laaya kahaan’. May be other songs will turn out to be familiar after I listen to them.
I am sure I had not heard today’s song earlier. Today’s song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Sharda. On screen it is Shashi Kapoor and Padma Khanna lip syncing the song. The song is a ‘party song’ where other than Shashi Kapoor and Padma Khanna we can see Moushumi Chatterjee, David and others.
Lyrics for the today’s song were sent by Prakashchandra.
Let us now enjoy today’s entertaining song 😊

Today’s song is from the ‘1970’ movie ‘Darpan’.
I came across this song very recently on ‘Vividh Bharti’. I liked this song on the very first instance when I listened to it. And as usual thereafter I checked it on the blog. I was pleasantly surprised that it was not yet covered on the blog, because that gives me this opportunity to present this song on the blog. Though I am bit late in sending this to our editors.
I want it to send for 8th July in remembrance of actor Jagdeep (29th March’1939 – 08th’2020) who is performing with Soniya Sahni in this entertaining duet song.
Actor Jagdeep passed away last year in 2020 and yesterday 8th July’ 2021 was his first remembrance anniversary.
Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jaafrey better known to us as Jagdeep was born on 29th March’1939 in Datia of the then Central Provinces (of British India) and nowadays Madhya Pradesh.
He started his career as a child artist in the Hindi Film Industry and went to become an established comedian in the movies. He acted in more than four hundred movies.
As a child artist some of his well-known movies are ‘Afsaanaa’, ‘Dhobi Doctor’,’Do Bigha Zameen’, ‘Ab Dilli Door Nahin’, and ‘Ham Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’ etc.
Before he established himself as a ‘comedian’ he has played many good roles in his career as an adult artist in movies like ‘Bhabhi-1957’, ‘Punar Milan-1964’, ‘Noor Mahal-1964’, ‘Lootera Aur Jaadugar-1968’ etc. He played a comic role in the ‘1968’ movie ‘Brahmachari’ and went on to do mainly the comic roles thereafter.
And with his famous ‘Soorma Bhopali’ act in the 1975 movie ‘Sholay’ he became an household name and with ‘Sholay’ creating history in HFM, Jagdeep’s ‘Soorma Bhopali’ also become a part of that history.
His last appearance was in the ‘2017’ movie ‘Masti Nahin Sasti’. (As per information available on him in ‘Wikipedia’).
I think the today’s movie was one of those movies where he played a comedian. I am guessing because I have not watched this movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs.
‘Darpan-1970’ was directed by A. Subbarao for ‘Balan Movies Combines, Bombay’. It had Sunil Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Rehman, Soniya Sahni, Jagdeep, Sulochana, Lalita Pawar, Achala Sachdev, Seema, Baby Guddi, Sandhya Rani, Shammi, Arun Rai, Sadhna Khote, Saleema, Ramesh Deo, Mukri, Sundar, Bawan Lal, Prem Kumar, Ramchandra Rao and others.
This movie had seven songs in it, all written by Anand Bakshi. Music for this movie was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal.
Here is the list of songs appearing in this movie (as per HFGK Vol-IV 1961-1970)

So far, four songs from this movie ‘Darpan-1970’ have been posted on the blog.
Today’s song is the fifth song from this movie to be posted on the blog. Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar. As mentioned above Soniya Sahni and Jagdeep are performing on this ‘rickshaw song’ and lip-syncing in the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar, respectively.
Let us now enjoy this sweet, lovely song …

‘PANCHAM-RAFI’ Jodi’s Variety Songs – 5
———————————————————
Welcome all to today’s post which is coming after a long gap of more than two years. In this series we discussed song by ‘Pancham-Rafi’ jodi. This series was basically inspired by an article on the blog ‘Pancham and Only Pancham’ – and the title of the article is ‘Tribute to Rafi Sahab on 28th Death Anniversary‘, published on Rafi Sb’s twenty-eighth ‘Remembrance Anniversary’ on 31.07.2008. This article lists out the ‘variety of songs by the genius -Pancham-Rafi’ jodi based on different ‘genres’ of music.
When I came across the above article I thought to share this list with readers on our blog too. So, when I started this series in ‘2015’ with this song – “Jaag Devta Naag Devta“ – nine out of the twenty songs listed in the article were already posted on the blog. After that, I shared three more songs viz. – “Raqqaasa Mera Naam, Ae Sahib Sabko Salaam“, “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” and “Maakhan Chor Nandkishore Manmohan Ghanshyam Re“. The remaining songs were shared by our team members from time to time, and all these twenty songs are on the blog now.
Readers can go through the list in the article mentioned above. As the songs in this list were already getting posted on the blog, I had in the post for the song “Maine Kab Chaaha Ke Dulha Banoonga” mentioned that I will include some more songs in this series, not on the basis of music-genres, but these ‘special songs’ are from the category of being ‘the only Rafi song in a movie where music was composed by RD Burman.
Today’s song is one such song and it is from the movie ‘Phir Wohi Raat’ (1980).
This film was directed by Danny Dengzongpa for Prithvi Pictures, Bombay. The star cast includes Rajesh Khanna, Kim (new discovery), Shashikala, AK Hangal, Suresh Oberoi, Lalita Pawar, Tamanna, Aruna Irani, Danny Dengzongpa, Om Shivpuri, Shobha Khote, Jagdeep, Mukri, Bhagwan, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Madhu Malhotra, Shashi Kiran, Manmauji, Prakash, Lalita Kumari, Brahm Bharadwaj, Ranjeet Sood, Jugnu, Chand Usmani, Moolchand, Gopal Saigal, Master Chirag and others.
This movie was passed by Censor Board on 06.08.1980 with restricted viewing (Adults Only) certificate.
This movie had six songs, all written by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed to music by RD Burman. Here is the list of the songs of this movie,

Today’s song, the only Rafi song, in this movie is lip-synced on screen by actor Jagdeep.
Today 29th March 2021 is eighty-second birth anniversary (born on 29.03.1939) of actor Jagdeep. He passed away last year on 08th July 2020. As a tribute to him we will listen and enjoy this entertaining song from this movie. The song is ‘joie-de-vivre’ where other than Jagdeep we can see Mohan Choti, Bhagwan, Mukri, Birbal, Gopal Saigal and others also performing with him.
Also wishing herewith is ‘Happy Holi’ to all. Though the song is not a ‘holi’ song but ‘holi’ celebrations can be enjoyed this year ‘in house’ only – with playing this song and ‘taking a jig’ on this vibrant Pancham composition.

Here is the 13th and final song from LailaMajnu (1953). Out of the 14 songs listed at myswar.com and also with the posted songs list in the blog, 12 are posted. As mentioned in the penultimate post here , the extra song added in the list was ultimately used in the another Shammi Kapoor film ‘Chor Bazar (1954)’, with Sardar Malik’s music is posted here .
This is a prayer in a madrasa picturised on Master Jagdeep.
Madrasa or “Madrasah” is the oldest form of organized education institutions. One gathers all sort of general knowledge or information as one flits from interesting topics and not very interesting or boring issues. We keep growing, with the informal knowledge and gaining of wisdom, throughout our lives. And this is the way it should be, or the human intelligence would stagnate and die out. Nowadays, we are in danger of information overload, as there are too many sources, from which we can gather information on any topic or issue. I had a vague notion that “Madrasa” is one of the oldest form of organized system of imparting education, I read or heard somewhere. Then I looked up in Google to find out if my notion is correct. And I searched for “Maktab”, and as it happened, Google did confirm it to me in a very roundabout way, from maktab to kuttab to finally madrasah. I am beginning to dread finding answers on google, as the obvious answer it gives is misleading. One has to dig deeper in the results to come at a truthful conclusion.
I also found a pdf file of a research paper titled “Maktabs and Madrasas in India: A Look at Statistics based on 8th All India School Education Survey” at researchgate.net. The following para giving brief history is reproduced below:
“The first educational institution in the Muslim world was the mosque built at Medina early in the seventh century by the Prophet Muhammad and his Companions. From then on, mosques were used for teaching purposes, especially for the teaching of law and theology, but as society developed, study circles were held not only in the mosques but also in the palaces, in the streets and even in the market-places. The study circles also grew in number and quality during this period, forming the nuclei of what were to become the madrasas, colleges intended for adults who had already received their primary education in private schools or mosques. In the tenth century the madrasas emerged as an independent institution distinct from the mosque, although madrasas – at least in the early days – were set up either for a single jurist or to teach the tenets of a particular legal school. Thus was born a new kind of educational institution, destined in future to become a center of religious and secular learning in the Islamic world and a place where the representatives of the official class were educated in the spirit of Muslim orthodoxy.
The history of Madrasa education in India starts since the arrival of Muslims in India and it began in the 10th century with the establishment of Maktabs and Madrasas in the towns of Sind, Dabel, Mansura, Multan by the Arab traders and settlers (Haque, 2013).”
Considering, that education and knowledge is power, the imparting of power to the people, and starting young in observing, absorbing and gaining this power is a tradition in Islam, is a sobering thought. The very first “Wahee”(Divine revelation) that was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) began with the word “Iqraa”, meaning “read”, as in read, repeat, study and gain knowledge.
And to think that we all have arrived in this era of faster traffic of information, programming and coding and moving to artificial intelligence, through the foundation laid by the Prophet and his companions, of an education system, 1400 years ago. A lot has gone by and happened, and lessons have been learnt in these 1400 years.
May Allah Almighty give us and our future generations, the taufeeq, the discipline, talent and the spirit to gain, impart and constantly improve the education and knowledge, as these words in the prayer:
yaa rabb hamen ta’aleem ki
taufeeq ‘ataa kar
rakkhen tere farmaan ko
seene se lagaa kar
Wikipedia say this in one of the pages:
Literacy
In medieval times, the Caliphate experienced a growth in literacy, having the highest literacy rate of the Middle Ages, comparable to classical Athens’ literacy in antiquity.[7] The emergence of the Maktab and Madrasah institutions played a fundamental role in the relatively high literacy rates of the medieval Islamic world.[8]
I am yet to look up the antiquity age in classical Athens, to see if it is a concurrent period, later or earlier period, of what is given above as medieval times. 🙂
This is what it means dissemination of information available on the internet.
Let us move on to the song being posted and Jagdeep, who is in the middle of it all. We see a very young Jagdeep, singing this prayer with other students, as the ustad is looking on. Shamshad Begum is the singer of this prayer written by Shakeel Badayuni and composed by Ghulam Mohammed. Jagdeep was born 29th March, 1939, so he was 14 years old in 1953. He expired a few months ago on 20th July, 2020, another casualty possibly of these pandemic times. As per the filmography, he has worked in 391 films as an actor, starting as a child artist in 1950, up to 2017. This could be a record as a 67 year long career. Those who started before him in the industry have long since hung up their boots. Innumerable memorable characters played by him are part of the histology of hindi films and also the some sweet and some funny and some romantic songs filmed on Jagdeep are already posted in the blog. Some songs may be remaining to be posted, the current one being one of them.
Here is a memorable stanza of this famous background song pictured on Jagdeep in the film Bhaabhi(1957) :
khatam hue din us daali ke
jis par teraa baseraa thaa
aaj yahaan aur kal ho wahaan
ye jogi waalaa phera thaa
ye teri jaageer nahin thi
chaar ghadi ka dera tha
sadaa raha hai is duniyaa mein
kiskaa aab-o-daanaa
chal ud jaa re panchhi
ke ab ye des hua begaanaa

Hullo Atuldom
This post sees the 20th November 1981 released “Gehra Zakhm” (as written in the titles of the movie) making its debut on the blog.
It is possible that the success of “Dada” (1979) prompted the casting of Amjad Khan in a pivotal role in this, since in that period he was known more for his negative characters. Vinod Mehra was the hero -just as in “Dada”. Ranjeeta Kaur, Kadar Khan, Sheetal, Jagdeep, Satyen kappu, Om Shivpuri etc formed the rest of the cast. Master Mayur played the young Vinod Mehra and Master Titoo played Amjad Khan’s childhood. Master Ravi plays the child who is rescued by Amjad Khan from Kadar Khan’s goonda and restored to his mother with some heavy duty dialogues to the effect that “maa se badhkar koi cheez nahi”. Jagdeep is Vinod Mehra’s (Vijay) friend who keeps urging the educated unemployed Vijay to live honestly and stop coming up with get-rich schemes.
Just before I started writing this post I had a look at the movie until the point of this song. It has Kishore Kumar and Sapan Chakraborty singing for Vijay and Jimmy (Jagdeep) as they go about on a cycle along the streets of Bombay by night. They are hoping that their fortunes change and they are able to enjoy the luxuries of life. Leena Das is the dancer in the last stanza.
This movie had two lyricists- Vithalbhai Patel and Nida Fazli- penning five songs that were set to tune by Rahul Dev Burman. Asha Bhonsle, Mohd Rafi, Bhupinder, Anand Kumar (have seen his name against a few songs, but no info on him), Amit Kumar, Suresh Wadkar and Udit Narayan were the other singers in the movie.
I chanced upon this song when I googled for songs of Kishore Kumar which were not by regular lyricists meaning Anand Bakshi, Rajinder Krishan, Majrooh etc. Not that I don’t like their work, it is just that we feel that KK has not sung any other writer’s work. I also have been trying to present songs which KK has sung for actors other that Dev Anand, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh.
As we all know one of Vinod Mehra’s earliest songs “geet gata hoon main” had Kishore Kumar giving playback. That had the distinction of being composed by Shankar Jaikishan and written by Dev Kohli and stood at number 18 in that year’s Binaca Geetmala.
To start of with he was a reluctant actor. His debut was as playback for Dev Anand. He had a solo and his first ever duet with Lata Mangeshkar in that movie after which Lata – Kishore duets have been a norm for all leading pairs. And we have 206 of those duets on our blog. We have many duets of Kishore Kumar on the blog where he has sung with Mukesh, Mohd Rafi, R D Burman, S Balbir, Amit Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor and Shailendra Singh. Today we have a song with a new partner.
The first decade saw him singing one or two songs per movie; the maximum 7 songs he sang was for “Jaalsaaz” in 1959 and 8 songs for “Suhana Geet” also in 1959. But people say that his best period was post “Aradhana” in 1969 but we cannot close our eyes to “Jewel Thief”, “Guide”, “Half Ticket”, “Manmauji”, “Jhumroo”, “Rangoli” and all the other movies for which he has lent his voice.
Yes, post 1969 he has been used for actors as varied as Sunil Dutt, Dharmendra, Jeetendra, even Pran and his own brother Ashok Kumar. Kishore Kumar’s voice has been used successfully for all heroes of the ’70s through the ’80s till death snatched him away from us 33 years ago.
Remembering this excellent actor, singer, producer, director, music director and artist on his anniversary.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2010-2020) – Song No. 62
———————————————————————————–
Ten years ago, the blog was in cruise mode, merrily covering six songs every day. 28 august 2010, the day exactly ten years ago was no exception. First song of the day got posted at 7:01 AM and sixth post at 8 :34 AM !
Ten years back the following songs were posted on the blog;
Song | Movie title-Year | Remarks |
---|---|---|
Kyaa bataaun muhabbat hai kyaa | Parbat-1952 | All songs covered |
Dil ke phaphole jal uthe seene ke daag se | Parichay-1954 | 03 songs posted |
Tum ek baar muhabbat ka imithaan to lo | Baabar-1960 | All songs covered |
Meri aankhon se koyi neend liye jaata hai | Pooja Ke Phool-1964 | All songs covered* |
Binaa badraa ki bijuriyaa kaise chamke | Bandhan-1969 | 04 songs posted |
Saath mein pyaaraa saathi hai | Dil Daulat Duniyaa-1972 | 03 songs posted |
Three out of six movies have since been YIPPEED. Other three movies are still up for grabs as far as today’s blog ten year challenge is concerned.
So, here is a song from “Dil Daulat Duniya” (1972), the latest of the six movies, and perhaps the most obscure of the six movies that were covered ten years ago.
Three songs from “Dil Daulat Duniya” (1972) have been covered so far :-
Song | Posted On |
---|---|
Saath mein pyaaraa saathi hai | 28.08.2020 |
Masti aur jawaani ho | 18.07.2013 |
Ruk meri raani…. o monalisa | 18.07.2017 |
Here is the fourth song from “Dil Daulat Duniya” (1972) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle and chorus. Lyrics is supposedly a joint effort of Hasrat Jaipuri and Neeraj (according to HFGK). Music is composed by Shankar Jaikishan,
Only the audio of the song is available. Seeing that Rajesh Khanna and Sadhana were in lead roles, this song was almost certainly picturised on them. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.
Mr Anekant, our knowledgeable reader informs us that the song was picturised on Jagdeep and Helen.
Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

“Jaan e Bahaar”(1979) was produced by Prakash Agrawal and directed by Prakash Kapoor for Nav Chitra Bombay. This movie had Sachin,Sarika, Jagdeep,Paintal, Indrani Mukherjee, Pinchoo Kapoor, Madan Puri, Kanhaiya Lal, Lalita Pawar, Manju Bansal, Rajguru, Bhagwan Dada, Mushtaq merchant, Manhar Desai, Viju Khote, Renu, Ram Avtar, Bhagwan Sinha, Munshi Munnaka, Satyabhan Sinha, Pappu, Rasool, Sheikh, Ramesh Goel, Anu Dhavan, Sangeeta Bhosle, Deependra, Ashok.L.,Sattar Bhai, Manohar, Subhash Ohri, Baijnath, Masterjee, Ashat Kapoor, Vinod Sharma, B.C.Mahor, Sitaram, Aslam Khan, Satya Devi, Khushal, Raaj Anand, Rustum-e-Hind, Suresh Jain, Ashok Bhatia, with friendly appearances by Padma Khanna, Junior Mehmood, Asrani and Dheeraj Kumar.
Today (29 june 2020) is the 18th remembrance day of Gauhar Kanpuri.
I associate the name of Gauhar Kanpuri with the “Zakhmi”(1975) songs Abhi abhi thi dushmani and Jalta hai jiya mera. He also penned some other well known songs such as Jhoomta saawan dekho aaya (Do Khilaadi)(1976) , Allah karam karna Maula tu reham karna (Dada)(1978), Tumhe geeton mein dhaaloongaa (Saawan Ko Aane Do)(1979) etc. He continued to write lyrics for movies well into 1980 and even 1990s, but I remember him mostly for his songs of 1970s mentioned earlier.
As a tribute to Gauhar Kanpuri, here is the first (out of 5 songs) song from “Jaan e Bahaar”(1979). This song is sung by Rafi, Runa Laila and Anand Kumar Chitragupta. Gauhar Kanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. The song is picturised on Sachin, Sarika, Jagdeep and Kanhaiyalal. Sachin and Jagdeep share Rafi’s voice while Kaanhaiyalal lip syncs in Anand Kumar Chitragupta’s voice.
The picturisation is supposed to be a romantic cum comedy song, but I find the picturisation a big let down. Moviegoers of those days (inlcuding I myself) had wisely kept away from patronising this movie and the movie deservedly flopped at the box office.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.
With this song, “Jaan e Bahaar”(1979) makes its debut in the blog.

Hullo Atuldom
Ideally this post should have come last year, when this veteran of about a few hundred movies, turned 80. But then that has not happened.
I have decided that we shall not let the occasion go unnoticed. And in south India, the celebration for a person turning 80 is normally on completing 81, as the system of calculating the auspicious date to celebrate says that the person should have witnessed a 1000 full moons in his life, with the life being said to have started after the 1st birthday. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Whatever be the logic, the celebration called “Sadabhishekam” is after the person crosses 81 and our celebrity is turning 81 today. So here we are wishing this veteran a Happy 81st birthday.
He was born Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri on 29th March 1939 in Amritsar. He made his first screen appearance at the young age of 11 or 12. B.R.Chopra’s “Afsana” was the starting point followed by “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”, “Hum Panchi ek Daal ke”, “Do Bigha Zameen”, “Aar Paar” etc. AVM’s “Bhabhi” saw him in his first role of a grownup. And then there was no looking back and we have seen him in movies till 2017- a really long career. He played a leading man in a few movies before finding his comic timing in “Brahmachari”.
He has had many famous songs filmed on him -“Paas baitho tabiyat bahal jayegi”, “In pyar ki raahon mein”, we have seen him shaking a leg when Shamshad Begum sang, for Kumkum’s debut in movies, “kabhi aar kabhi paar”. This post introduces us to the person whose 81st birthday it is today.
Yes we are wishing “Soorma Bhopali” of Sholay a.k.a father of Jaaved and Naaved Jaafri of ‘Booogie Boogie’ fame. Simply put we are celebrating comedian Jagdeep’s birthday.
He may have done around 100 movies prior to “Sholay” but when Salim-Javed wrote the character of ‘Soorma Bhopali’ it changed Jagdeep’s fortunes forever. He was seen in many movies after “Sholay” too but very few remember him as the sidekick of Gopi (Mithun Chakravarty) ‘Kabari” in Surakksha”” (1979); ‘Chandu alias James Bond’ in the 1977 release “Agent Vinod”; he had a tiny-blink-n-miss role in Feroz Khan’s “Qurbani”. Jagdeep was forever requested to reappraise his Soorma Bhopali, atleast once, in many subsequent movies. He himself wrote and directed a movie with the title “Soorma Bhopali” in 1988. I don’t know much about that movie other than the fact that it had a whole lot of Jagdeep’s co-actors from “Sholay” making guest and special appearances in that movie. IMDB.com gives the list of actors as Agha, Amitabh Bachchan, Master Bhagwan, Birbal, Brahmachari, Danny, Dharmendra; Aruna Irani appears to be the sole female in the starcast.
I have chosen a song from this 1988 movie to accompany this post. The music directors were Dilip Sen- Sameer Sen and songs were written by Asad Bhopali, Jaan Nissar Akhtar and Jagdeep himself has written a song. It was a difficult task selecting a song from this movie as Jagdeep has also sung a few songs in the movie. But I finally decided that we will have a song that accompanies the movie’s credits that is what I have deduced from the available clip. This song is sung by Mohd Aziz and Jagdeep and Asad Bhopali is the lyricist. As I was writing the lyrics I caught the names of lot more actors than those that I have mentioned who were common to Sholay and this movie.
Here is wishing our very own Soorma Bhopali, who had a one-liner to his character in Sholay that said “Soorma Bhopali aise nahin hai”, A very Healthy and happy Birthday.

Lyrics
assalaam vaalekkum
aadaab arz hai
namaste
aao hanste hanste
aur jaao hanste hanste
paan khaalo
aur issi baat pe bajaao taali
ke main hoon soorma bhopali
arre haan soorma bhopali
ke main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
main na rahoon Bhopal mein
toh sheher lage hai khaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
yeh mera bhopal hai
jo pyaar se maalaamaal hai
bairagadh se T T Nagar tak
jo hai yahaan khush-haal hai
moti masjid jaama masjid
Taj ul Masjid dekh kar
jo bhi dekhe birla mandir
chamak uthhe hai uski nazar
kamlapati raani ka mahal hai
beech mein donon taalon ke
jaise meri naak hai pyaare
beech mein donon gaalon ke
meri chaal anokhi sabse
meri chaal anokhi sabse
meri ada hai niraali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
meri cycle meri dulhan hai
isko saja ke rakhta hoon
ise akela jab bhi chhodoon
taala laga ke rakhta hoon
logon meri soorat pe na jaao
dil hai mera aaine jaisa
mujhse meri ammi ne kahaa thha
beta haath ka mail hai paisa
paise ki parwaah na karna
bhale kaam mein rehna aage
uske karam par rakhna bharosa
woh jab chaahe kismat jaage
ooparwaala
ooparwaala kadam kadam par
kare teri rakhwaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
arre haan soorma bhopali
main na rahoon bhopal mein
toh sheher lage hai khaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
