Eena meena deeka
Posted on: November 13, 2008
In 1940s and 1950s, Bollywood music was undergoing a period of transition. New kinds of music were being introduced. One was the introduction of folk music from different parts of India. Another was a mixture of such folk music with classical music.
Another innovation tried was the introduction of western music. For instance, songs based on Rock and Roll music were introduced in 1950s and they became popular too. 1957 was a year when Rock and Roll music based songs were especially popular.
“eena meena deeka” has gone on to become the most popular rock and roll song to have been introduced during that era.
This song is all about Kishore Kumar. He has sung as well as acted in this song. He is the person who has taken this song to such dizzy heights that even its makers may not have imagined in their wildest of dreams. Of course, the music direction of C Ramchandra and the lyrics of Rajinder Krishan cannot be underestimated. But it is clear that carrying this song off with such seemingly effortless ease was something that only Kishore Kumar could have achieved. And he achieved this feat.
Kishore Kumar was paired with Vyjyanti Mala in this movie and the same song also had a female version too, that was sung by Asha Bhonsle. That song is also very good, but it is clear that the Kishore version is just unbeatable.
This song finished 15th in Binaca geetmala final of 1957. Of course, this song has gone on to become much more popular since.
Male version is picturised on Kishore Kumar, Minu Mumtaz and others, with Vyjyanti Mala watching. The female version is picturised on Vyjyanti Mala with Minu Mumtaz and Kishore Kumar watching, with the later watching in disguise (dressed as a burqa clad female).

I saw this on Wikipedia.
“The music for the film was composed by C. Ramchandra and the lyrics were written by Rajendra Krishan. The song “Eena Meena Deeka”, sung by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar in two different versions, became very popular.[2] It was one of the Hindi cinema’s first rock and roll numbers.[3] The words of the song were inspired by kids playing outside composer C. Ramchandra’s music room.[4] The kids were chanting “Eeny, meeny, miny, moe”, which inspired Ramchandra and his assistant John Gomes to create first line of the song, “Eena Meena Deeka, De Dai Damanika”. Gomes, who was a Goan, added the words “Maka naka” (Konkani for “I don’t want”). They kept on adding more nonsense rhymes till they ended with “Rum pum po!”.[4] The title of the David Dhawan film Eena Meena Deeka was inspired by this song.” – http://tinyurl.com/2bb35xs

Such a classic – and videos not available. 😦
On youtube, I find a couple of videos but the quality isn’t too great. Hope we can find a better quality video, otherwise we’ll have to manage with whatever is available.
