1950s and 1960s saw many historical movies ( mostly from Mughal period) being made. These movies have become part of Indian psyche. So much so that there are many people who actually think that emperor Akbar spoke in a “fata baans” kind of croaking voice, and that there was actually someone called Anarkali. History tells us that Akbar hardly looked like Prithviraj Kapoor and there is no mention of Anarkali in historical chronicles, but then far less number of people read history than those that watch movies.
I am sure everyone who ever saw the movie “Taj Mahal” would believe likewise that Shahjahan looked like Pradeep Kumar and that Mumtaz Mahal looked like Bina Rai.If the real life Shahjahan and Mumtaz Mahal were anything like Pradeed Kumar and Bina Rai, they must have sung some wonderful duets those days, which are sadly lost to us.
“Jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega” is such a simple lyric, but it has now become an an out and out iconic song. Just about any one who listens to Bollywood music has definitely heard, and even hummed ( however badly) this song sometime or the other. Roshan was mindbloggingly prolific in churning out one memorable song after another in those days, and 1963 was an especially productive year for him.
This all time evergreen song was, unsurprisingly, the top song in Binaca geetmala final of 1963.

I think if I had to pick one soundtrack from a film to take with me to a deserted island, it would be Roshan’s Taj Mahal.
Every song in it is wonderful….

There are two versions of this song. In this post, the video clip is of sad version while the lyrics are of happy version.

Atul ji,
The song version lyrics posted above is the first version of this song. The video link given with the post is for the second and third versions of this same duet.
All three version are in Rafi-lata duets. With slight changes in mukhda’s and different stanza’s.
I have sent an e-mail just now to you, giving lyrics of all version.
This song is an eternal classic.

Shri. Atul ji,
As per HFGK Vol-IV (1961-1970) this song ‘Jo waada kiya wo nibhaana padega’ is considered as three part song i.e. three different songs and that makes the total number of songs of this movie to TEN in HFGK.
Kindly if you could please make the correction in the song figure as (10) instead of (9) please.

Evergreen song.
Very pleasant.
I think it had some sort of record on Binaca Geetmala. Not only was it #1 but it was #1 for such a long time that they changed the rules to limit the number of weeks a song could be #1. Something like that.
