Ring tones has become a big business after the advent of mobile phones. In India, ring tones of movie songs are very popular. Though many people have new songs as their ringtones, some people like old songs as their ring tones as well.
A few days ago, I heard a ringtone of “Pankh hote to ud aati re”. What a catchy tune it was.
I am sure the owner of this mobile phone must have been suitably impressed with this song to have made it his ring tone. But I doubt if he had much information about this song. People have been loving this song for last 45 years without knowing much about this song.
For instance, how many people know the movie this song is from ? The movie is called “Sehra”. What about the music director ? It is someone called Ramlal. The lyricist was Hasrat Jaipuri. Of course, the voice is one which is known to everyone as Lata’s.
This is an amazing song from 1960s. In fact, the same can be said about other songs of this movie as well.
The song is picturised on Sandhya. And those who are familiar with songs picturised on Sandhya, such songs had Sandhya performing many difficult tasks simultaneously in addition to singing and dancing. In this song, she seems to have got a breather from her usual songs. But that is only by her own lofty standards. By the standards of any other actress, her workload even in this song is quite heavy.
The song however owes its popularity to Lata’s voice. And she was very much on top of her considerable singing skills.

Outstanding dance by Sandhya. Anyone who knows how to dance would know how difficult it is to dance like a bird without looking like a cartoon.
Dance includes strutting ike a bird,shaking torso and waving hands like wings and often she balances herself on one foot doing dance-gracefully. What a multi tasker.
I have not seen anyone dancing ‘bird’ like Sandhya in Indian movies.
Her dances in Navrang are even tougher. I do not think we have any dancer like her.

This has been one of my favourite songs since the late 70s.
And this was way before I saw the video.
After seeing the video, I could only admire the song even more because it shows Sandhya so genuine and active. I doubt if other heroines would feel as comfortable doing a dance like this – they may consider it very silly but Sandhya carries it off with aplomb.
