“Barsaat ki raat” was an awesome musical extravaganza, the likes of which were perhaps seen neither before nor since. The story of the movie itself revolved around a qawwali competion, so naturally the movie was full of qawwalis and most of them have gone on to become all time great evergreen qawwalis. Roshan, the music director of this movie was perhaps the best music director as far as composing qawwalis was concerned, and he made his reputation in this genre in this movie.
The movie though begins not with a qawwali, but with a semi classical song viz “garjat barsat saawan aayo re” sung by Suman Kalyanpur and Kamal Barot. Lyricist of this song was Sahir Ludhuianvi. Roshan was trained in classical music as well. He had undergone rigorous training under the legendary Ustaad Alauddin Khan Dagar of Maihar gharana in 1940s.
What was the first thing that I noticed when I listened to this song ? I noticed the opening music. I have heard this music countless times but I never realised that this music was a part of this song.
Where have I heard this opening music. In Vividh Bharati’s classical music programme called “Sangeet Sarita”. Vividh Bharati has been using this music from “garjat barsat saawan aayo re” as the signature tune for their signature programme !
This song is sung by Suman Kalyanpur ( and not Lata) and Kamal Barot, and they have sung it beautifully. And how can one forget the lyrics of Sahir Ludhianvi. It is his lyrics that makes listening to a semi classical song such a pleasing experience.

This song was first sung by Lata Mangeshkar for the film Malhar in 1951 under Roshan’s baton. It was re-recorded by Roshan for Barsaat ki raat nearly a decade later with Suman and Kamal barot.
