Chaudhvin ka chaand ho
Posted on: December 13, 2008
This song was written by Shakeel Badayuni and music was created by Ravi. Shakeel Badayuni was a lyricist who usually worked only for Naushad. When he was signed up to work for this movie, he came up to Ravi, grabbed Ravi’s hand and told him “I have never worked with an outside production. I am nervous, please cover up for my deficiencies”. Such humility ! This lyrics must go down as one of the greatest lyrics written in Bollywood movie history.
Of course, the same could be said about the music of Ravi. And what about Rafi ? His voice has always been regarded as divine, and he has excelled himself in this song.
The list of accolades won by this song is legion. This song became Binaca geetmala topmost song in Binaca geetmala final of 1961. Rafi was adjusted Filmfare best male playback singer of the year for this song.
The fact that this song became an iconic song among iconic songs is an even bigger prize for this song.
This song was picturised on Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rahman. This picturisation showing Guru Dutt praising the beauty of a sleeping Waheeda Rahman is regarded as a classic picturisation of a song.
Overall, it is an immortal song in every way one looks at it.
PS-Sudhir jee has now provided a translation of this song. so listeners can now enjoy and appreciate the nuances of sublime song much better.

Song-Chaudhvin ka chaand ho (Chaudhvin ka chaand) (1960) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD- Ravi
Lyrics
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho, yaa aaftaab ho
jo bhi ho tum khudaa ki qasam, laajwaab ho
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho
zulfen hain jaise kaandhon pe baadal jhuke huye
zulfen hain jaise kaandhon pe baadal jhuke huye
aankhen hain jaise may ke pyaale bhare huye
masti hai jisme pyaar ki tum, wo sharaab ho
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho yaa aaftaab ho
jo bhi ho tum khudaa ki qasam, laajwaab ho
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho
chehraa hai jaise jheel me hansta huaa kamal
chehraa hai jaise jheel me hansta huaa kamal
yaa zindagi ke saaj pe chhedi huyi ghazal
jaane bahaar tum kisi shaayar kaa khwaab ho
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho yaa aaftaab ho
jo bhi ho tum khudaa ki qasam, laajwaab ho
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho
honthon pe kheltin hain tabassum ki bijliyaan
honthon pe kheltin hain tabassum ki bijliyaan
sajde tumhaari raah mein kartin hain kaikashaan
duniyaa-e-husn-o-ishq kaa tum hi shabaab ho
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho yaa aaftaab ho
jo bhi ho tum khudaa ki qasam, laajwaab ho
chaudhvin kaa chaand ho

zulfen hain jaise kaandhon pe baadal jhuke huye
aankhen hain jaise may ke pyaale bhare huye
masti hai jisme pyaar ki tum, wo sharaab ho
Your tresses
They sit on your shoulders
Like a bevy of dark clouds
Your eyes
Are like cups overflowing (with wine)
You are the intoxicant
Abounding with the stupor of love
chehraa hai jaise jheel me hansta huaa kamal
yaa zindagi ke saaj pe chhedi huyi ghazal
jaan-e-bahaar tum kisi shaayar kaa khwaab ho
Your face
Tis like a smiling lotus in a lake
Or maybe
A love poem strummed on the strings of life
O the life breath of spring
You are verily a dream of a poet
(NOTE: Jaan-e-Bahaar = life of spring)
honthon pe kheltin hain tabassum ki bijliyaan
sajde tumhaari raah mein kartin hain keh’kashaan
duniyaa-e-husn-o-ishq kaa tum hi shabaab ho
The lips
They shine with lightning smiles
The stars in the heavens above
They worship the ground graced by your feet
You are the charming splendor
Of the worlds of beauty and love
(NOTE: tabassum = smile;
keh’kashaan = sky full of shining stars, also refers to the Milky Way)

The beautiful lyrics by Shakeel, the subtle music by Ravi, Rafi’s mellifluous voice, Guru Dutt’s amazing acting, combine these together and you have BLISS!! :).
One of these days, I want to meet you in person Atul and thank you for what you are doing. Hats off.

It is true that Shakeel mostly worked with Naushad and if you analyse his toatl output, more of his songs with Naushad became hit, iconic and landmark songs.
He,however, did work with other composers as well.It may be an irony that the 3 Filmfare awards won by him were all for other composers.
Ravi-Chaudhavi ka chand (1960)
Ravi-Gharana(1961)
Hemant Kumar-Bees saal Baad(1962)
Ofcourse earlier there were no Filmfare Awards for Lyricists.

Thanks for the song. My dad used to sing it to my mother, and it still brings tears to my eyes!
