Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
Posted on: December 22, 2008
I am always sour at the double standards of Indians. The revere “cow” but treat its cousin “bhains” (water buffalo) with ridicule. Many of the pejorative sayings in India are associated with bhains ( viz Kala akshar bhains baraabar, bhains ke aage been bajaana etc.)
Even Bollywood moie makers were not behind. They too came up with their ow bhains song- “Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara”.
I just came to know that this song was picturised on Shammi Kapoor and it was from “Pagla Kahin Ka”. All this was news to me because the only thing I knew about this song was that it was sung by Manna Dey. And that makes this the first song where Manna Dey gave playback for Shammi Kapoor. I thank my reader Shontou for this information.
Even in case of this comedy song, I had only heard a few lines. While researching this song, I managed to get its entire lyrics right and realised what funny lyrics Hasrat Jaipuri had come up with in this song.
Picturisation shows this song being sung by the inmates of a lunatic asylum, and Shammi Kapoor being one of them. Their doctor is the pretty looking Asha Parekh and she too appears in this song.
I notice that all the known unknown comedians of the time were playing the roles of lunatics in this song. I notice that the person who plays the danda wielder is the same rolypoly person who later appeared in the “Don” song “khiake paan banaraswaala” dancing alongwith Amitabh Bachchan. Any idea what is the name of this person ? There are many other comedians in this song as well, viz Birbal, Sundar, etc.
This bhains song is good for a few laughs. Most of the laughs are generated from the lyrics which describe the qualities of this bhains.
This song was a timepass song, but it has managed to catch the imagination of people and has managed to become an evergreen song, although most listeners are only familiar with the first few lines of the song. Here is the song, with full lyrics.

Lyrics
kyun maara
kyun maara
kyun maara
kyun kyun kyun kyun kyun
kyun kyun kyun kyun kyun kyun
Meri bhains ko danda
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi
aaa aaa
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi
aaa aaa
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo laddoo pede khaati hai
haan
wo pedon pe chadh jaati hai
haan
wo laddoo pede khaati hai
wo pedon pe chadh jaati hai
ye machar been bajaate hain
wo apna raag sunaati hai
wo thummak thummak naache
jab main dil ka bajaaun
main dil ka bajaaun ….iktaara
Meri bhains ko danda
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi
aaa aaa
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
arre ghar ka ye ik station hai
haan
aur jhandi pyaari pyaari hai
haan
arre ghar ka ye ik station hai
aur jhandi pyaari pyaari hai
hum sab to rail ke dibbe hain
wo apni engine gaadi hai
wo gussa jab bhi karti hai
to ban jaati hai
to ban jaati hai angaara
meri bhains ko danda
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi
aaa aaa
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
Bondhu re bondhu re
wo jaan se badhkar pyaari hai
bondhu re
bondhu re
kyaa bolun main
kyaa bolun main ik kataari hai
bondhu re
bondhu re
wo jaan se badhkar pyaari hai
haan
kyaa bolun ik kataari hai
haan
wo jaan se badhkar pyaari hai
kyaa bolun ik kataari hai
kajraari uski ankhiyaan hain
is baat pe apni yaari hai
maine to apni kallo ka hai naam rakha
hai naam rakha …Jahaanara
Meri bhains ko danda
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi
aaa aaa
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi
aaa aaa
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi
aaa aaa
Meri bhains ko danda kyun maara
wo khet me chaara charti thi
tere baap ka wo kya karti thi

Very nice song.
And one that I remember from my childhood days.
This song may seem like a timepass song but the movie was quite a serious movie. In fact it did not do well at all at the box-office. Apparently the audience did not quite like Shammi Kapoor in a mental hospital (this is central to the movie). At least this was Asha Parekh’s explanation when she was asked about this movie. She said it was a big disappointment for Shammi Kapoor because he had really put a lot of effort into this movie.
At that time (towards end of 60s) Shammi’s career was beginning to decline. Movies like this one and Preetam flopped. Even Prince did not do that well. Andaaz was a saviour (but it is best remembered for Rajesh’s cameo). Jaane Anjaane flopped.

Atul,
today I had a bit more time and have spent looking at your older posts and listening to songs that I usually do not have time to do.
I remember this song because someone who is very famous now was a relative and a close friend of one my uncles when I was little and was a regular visitor to the joint family house.
And he was a real comic too: us kids were in splits when he decided to sing us meri bhains ko danda in KL Saigal’s voice and style…totally classic :))

We can only wish that he would decide to do it now at any of his concerts: I am sure it would be still be greatly appreciated; but maybe becoming famous & serious has its drawbacks- you can’t clown around any more!

Along with Hum kale hain to kya hua song from Gumnaam, this song would rank as one of the best composed funny songs.

This song actually is a Jaat folk song from Haryana/Rajasthan and is much older then the film version . As is the practice with funny folk songs there are many variations in the lyrics and tune. I don’t know if this song as a folk song is still poplar . Way back in 1963/64 , In our army officers mess in a remote location in NEFA , after couple of drinks all of us used to join a Jaat officer in singing this dittee and another popular funny Haryanvi/punjabi ( ? ) song “Hakim Tara chand mere kothey pe aa ja
