Deewaane ka naam to poocho

One fine day, I will count all the Rafi songs that he sang for Shammi Kapoor and find out how many such songs were there in all. There just seems to be so many of them. And all of them are so wonderful to listen to. Listening to these songs is a perfect recipe to cheer oneself up.
And there can be no doubt in anyone’s mind that this particular song is among the most lovely, romantic and beautiful Rafi songs that he sung for Shammi Kapoor. In fact I just wonder how Rafi was able to muster up such energy and enthusiasm time and again for so many times. I mean, singing such songs is no joke. It must have taken so much out of a singer to sing such energetic songs. Kudos to Rafi, that he has left such a large number of outstanding songs that one can enjoy even today. In fact these songs are so timeless in nature that their continued popularity over generations is assured.
The picturiation shows Shammi Kapoor seated in the backseat of a car and singing this song for a pretty young Sharmila tagore, with the French driver looking on amused. Then Shammi continues to sing this song throughout Paris. I am sure Parisians did not have the equivalent of “eve teasing” rules back then, nor do they have them now, so Shammi gets a free hand there, chasing Sharmila Tagore to his heart’s content.
The scenery of 1960s Paris is an added attraction in this song, in case one bothers to look beyond the couple.
Song-Deewane ka naam to poocho (An evening in Paris) (1967) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Shailendra, MD-Shankar Jaikishan
Lyrics
deewaane kaa naam to poochho
pyaar se dekho, kaam to poochho
chaahe phir na milnaa, are chaahe phir na milnaa
deewaane kaa naam to poochho
pyaar se dekho, kaam to poochho
chaahe phir na milnaa, are chaahe phir na milnaa
gussaa chhodo, baat to maano
is bande ko apnaa jaano
door se dhokhaa ha ho saktaa thaa
door se dhokhaa ho saktaa thaa
paas hoon main ab to pahchaano
deewaane kaa naam to poochho
pyaar se dekho, kaam to poochho
chaahe phir na milnaa, are chaahe phir na milnaa
hat gayaa aakhir bharam kaa saayaa
ab samjhaa main ab yaad aayaa
khwaab mein tumko, aqsar dekhaa
khwaab mein tumko, aqsar dekhaa
aaj mudassim saamne paayaa
deewaane kaa naam to poochho
pyaar se dekho, kaam to poochho
chaahe phir na milnaa, aji chaahe phir na milnaa
ye Paris ki shaam suhaani
pyaar ki nagri, roop ki raani
ban ke rahegi haakoyi kahaani
ban ke rahegi haakoyi kahaani
chhid ke rahegaa koyi afsaanaa
deewaane kaa naam to poochho
pyaar se dekho, kaam to poochho
chaahe phir na milnaa, are chaahe phir na milnaa
deewaane kaa naam to poochho
pyaar se dekho, kaam to poochho
chaahe phir na milnaa, are chaahe phir na milnaa

When you count all the songs Rafi sang for Shammi, dont forget ‘Gham-e-Hasti se bas begana hota, Khudaya kash main deewana hota’ from the 1962 Shammi movie “Vallah Kya Baat Hai”.

this song is nice but certainly not the best song sung by rafisaab for shammi kapoor. what is unique abt this song is it a very high pitch song and the “aaaaaa” alaap taken by rafisaab is,i guess, the highest pitch ever taken by a hindi singer(i am still to come across any other song where any indian singer has gone to this level of pitch)
but one thing is sure rafisaab is the best………!!

khwaab mein tumko, ‘ aksar ‘ dekhaa
aaj ‘ mujassim ‘ saamne paayaa
ban ke ‘ rahega haa koyi afsaanaa ‘
chhid ke ‘ rahegi koyi kahaani ‘
“mujassima” is a sculpture, but the poet here means ‘in person’ or physical presence, so it is ‘mujassim’. There is a word for this expression in hindi i.e. ‘ pratyaksh ‘.

Yup,this surely ranks among my favorite Shammi-Rafi saab songs.Always boosts my energy level!
Sharmila Tagore did a couple of bold things in this movie for its time.Like the cabaret song number titled Leeja Leeja. Also wore a swimming costume.
