Tu chhupi hai kahaan

“Navrang”, a musical blockbuster from 1958 had some awesome songs, one of which “aadha hai chandrama raath aadhi” has already appeared in this blog. Here is another fabulous song from “Navrang” sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. Bharat Vyas was an expert lyricist, and C Ramchandra was the music director of this movie. Together they have created this memorable song.
I have said it a few times about Manna Dey, that he often got to sing very difficult songs, and this song is no exception. Not just Manna Dey, even Asha Bhonsle has done well. And the music is just beautiful. One cannot admire C Ramchandra enough. He was a true genius.
The picturisation is on Mahipal and Sandhya. It is nice to see that Sandhya did not have to perform some onerous tasks in this song for a change. That is what I thought initially. Of course she is subjected to the usual rigourous routines that she was called upon to perform in all V Shantaram movies.
And the picturisation involves huge bells and other such items. I wonder if they were real or it was some special effects. In either case, this picturisation was a huge technical accomplishment considering that this picturisation took place 50 years ago.
In fact, everyone associated with this song has excelled. This is a must listen and must watch song. If one goes deep into the audio and video of the song, one may begin to realise that mindblowing amount of time and effort must have been devoted in creating this song.
Song-Tu chhupi hai kahaan (Navrang) (1959) Singers-Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Lyrics-Bharat Vyas, MD-C Ramchandra
Lyrics
aa
tu chhupi hai kahaan main tadaptaa yahaan
tere bin pheekaa pheekaa hai dil kaa jahaan
chhupi hai kahaan main tadaptaa yahaan
tu gayi ud gayaa rang jaane kahaan
tere bin pheekaa pheekaa hai dil kaa jahaan
chhupi hai kahaan main tadaptaa yahaan
dil ki mahfil mein jab naa mujhe tum mile
saans leti hoon aa ke is sunsaan mein
in bahaaron mein jab naa tujhe paa saki
in bahaaron mein jab naa tujhe paa saki
to tadapti hoon aa ke is veeraan mein
tere bin pheekaa pheekaa hai dil kaa jahaan
chhupi hai kahaan main tadaptaa yahaan
ye nazren deewaani tu khoyi huyi
tere rangeen sapnon ke rangon mein
umangon mein jab naa tujhe paa saki
umangon mein jab naa tujhe paa saki
dhoondhti hoon main gham ki tarangon mein
tere bin pheekaa pheekaa hai dil kaa jahaan
chhupi hai kahaan main tadaptaa yahaan
tu chhupi hai kahaan
chhupi hai kahaan
chhupi hai kahaan
main chhupi hoon piyaa teri palakan mein
teri dhadkan mein, teri har saans mein,
teri har aas mein
main chhupi hoon kahaan meraa ye raaz sun
dard ke haathon gham se bharaa saaz sun
mere rote huye dil ki aawaaz sun
jab talak teraa meraa na hogaa milan
main zameen aasmaan ko hilaati rahoongi
aakhri aas tak aakhri saans tak
khud tadpoongi aur tadpaati rahoongi
ye kaun ghunghroo jhamkaa
ye kaun chaand chamkaa
ye dharti pe aasmaan aa gayaa poonam kaa
ye kaun phool mahkaa
ye kaun panchhi chahkaa
mahfil mein kaisi khushboo udi dil jo meraa bahkaa
lo tan mein jaan aayi, honthon pe taan aayi
meri chakori chaandni mein kar ke snaan aayi
bichhdaa wo meet aayaa, jeewan kaa geet aayaa
do aatmaaon ke milan kaa din puneet aayaa
soorat hai mere sapnon ki tu sohini
jamunaa tu hi hai tu hi meri mohini
tere bin pheekaa pheekaa hai dil kaa jahaan
chhupi hai kahaan main tadaptaa yahaan
tu chhupi hai kahaan
chhupi hai kahaan
chhupi hai kahaan

If I ever make a list of songs with great picturisations, this song will be right up there.
What a visual delight – and so beautifully crafted by Shantaram. But then he was known for attention to detail. Like you say, the effort involved in this song would have been phenomenal.
Everything about this song is just so perfect.

Thanks for including this song! As I was listening to it today, I was lost in Mahendra Kapoor’s rendition of the song with so much emotion, that one cannot help feeling sorry for the man who has been searching for his Mohini and realizes finally that his wife and Mohini are one and the same. What a beautiful song, and what beautiful lyrics! It is truly a timeless song. Thanks again.
