Nainon mein badra chhaaye

“Mera Saaya” is full of memorable songs. It is difficult to tell which song is the best. In my opinion one should avoid ranking songs and enjoy all of them.
This movie, a musical blockbuster, had the killer combination of Lata- Raja Mehdi Ali Khan -Madan Mohan who created 4 outstanding Lata songs, each song an evergreen timeless song. I have not counted songs created on other singers in this movie, which were just as wonderful.
The song “Nainon mein badra chaaye” has the ability to make the listener get involved in the emotions conveyed in the song. And the emotion of nostalgia, remembrance, sense of loss etc have been conveyed so powerfully that the voice of Lata lingers on and haunts the listener long after the song is over.
One is so engrossed in the song that one may not notice that what he/she just heard was not a light song, but a semi classical song set in Raag Bhimpalasi. The sitaar that is audible in this song is played by sitar maestro Ustaad Raees Khan.
The listeners, even the laymen among them, can enjoy listening to this ad infinitum. If one needs a clinching evidence about the genius of Madan Mohan, then here is that evidence, and one can rest his/ her case.

Song-Nainon me badra chaaye (Mera Saaya) (1966) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Raja Mehdi Ali Khan, MD-Madan Mohan
Lyrics
nainon mein badraa chhaaye, bijli si chamke haaye
aise mein balam mohe, garwaa lagaa le
nainon mein badraa chhaaye, bijli si chamke haaye
aise mein balam mohe, garwaa lagaa le
nainon mein badraa chhaaye
madiraa mein doobi ankhiyaan
chanchal hain donon sakhiyaan
madiraa mein doobi
madiraa mein doobi ankhiyaan
chanchal hain donon sakhiyaan
dhalti rahengi tohe
palkon ki pyaari pakhiyaan
sharmaa ke dengi tohe
madiraa ke pyaale
nainon mein badraa chhaaye, bijli si chamke haaye
aise mein balam mohe, garwaa lagaa le
nainon mein badraa chhaaye

prem deewaani hoon main
sapnon ki raani hoon main
prem deewaani
prem deewaani hoon main
sapnon ki raani hoon main
pichhle janam se teri
prem kahaani hoon main
aa is janam mein bhi tu
apnaa banaa le
nainon mein badraa chhaaye, bijli si chamke haaye
aise mein balam mohe, garwaa lagaa le
nainon mein badraa chhaaye

Have just “replayed” this 4 times.
And am still listening to it !!!
Everything about it is perfect.
This is definitely one of my favourite Lata songs.
No doubt about it.

After Bairan Neend Na Aaye, this is my second most favorite Lata songs. Your remark about the great songs in Mera Saaya are on the mark. The movie that won the music award in 1966 must have had extraordinary music to beat the music from Mera Saaya, either that or the music awards are based on criteria other than musical quality.

Hi. I stumbled on your website while browsing for old Hindi songs and I love the selections. I am about about your age and I grew up watching and enjoying the same songs, the golden 60s and 70s. I doubt we will ever see another Rafi or Kishore any time soon. Anyway, if I may trouble you for a couple of farmaishes – maybe a Transgender category : Subhanallah Hassen Chehra by Rafi, Kashmir ki Kali and Aake Seedhi Lagi Dil per Jaise Katariiya by Kishore, Half-Ticket (Not sure). Both great picturisations and comic – and Pran is the villain common to both songs. I can hear these songs again and again without getting tired.
